Cu-Sn based alloys were manufactured by gas atomization spray casting route in order to achieve a fine scale microstructure and a high tensile strength. The spray cast Cu-10Sn-2Ni-0.2Si alloy had an equiaxed grain microstructure, with no formation of brittle ${\delta}-Cu_{41}Sn_{11}$ phase. Aging treatment promoted the precipitation of finely distributed particles corresponding to ${\delta}-Ni_2Si$ intermetallic phase throughout the $\alpha$-(CuSn) matrix. The cold-rolled Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy had a very high tensile strength of 1200 MPa and an elongation of 5%. Subsequent aging treatment at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1h slightly reduced the tensile strength to 700 MPa and remarkably increased the elongation up to 30%. This result has been explained by coarsening the precipitates due to over aging and reducing the dislocation density due to annealing effects.
In this study, Cu-10Sn and Cu-10Sn-2Ni-0.2Si alloys have been manufactured by spray casting in order to achieve a fine scale microstructure and high tensile strength, and investigated in terms of microstructural evolution, aging characteristics and tensile properties. Spray cast alloys had a much lower microhardness than continuous cast billet because of an improved homogenization and an extended Sn solid solubility. Spray cast Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy was characterized by an equiaxed grain microstructure with a small-sized (Ni, Si)-rich precipitates. Cold rolling of Cu-Sn-Ni-Si alloy increased a tensile strength to 1220 MPa, but subsequent ageing treatment reduced a ultimate tensile strength to 780 MPa with an elongation of 18%.
Effects of Zn addition on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Mg-8%Al-(0-1)%Zn casting alloys were investigated. With increasing Zn content, the amount of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase increased, while ${\alpha}$-(Mg) dendritic cell size became reduced. The corrosion rate decreased continuously with the increase in the Zn content. The evaluation of the microstructural evolution indicates that the improved barrier effect of ${\beta}$ particles formed more continuously along the dendritic cell boundaries and the incorporation of more ZnO into the surface corrosion product, by which the absorption of $Cl^-$ ions is impeded, are responsible for the better corrosion resistance in relation to the Zn addition.
With the increasing demand for light-weight materials to reduce fuel consumption, the automobile industry has extensively studied magnesium alloys which are light weight metals. The intrinsic poor formability and poor ductility at ambient temperature due to the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure and the associated insufficient number of independent slip systems restricts the practical usage of these alloys. Hot working of magnesium alloys using a forging or extrusion enables net-shape manufacturing with enhanced formability and ductility since there are several operative non-basal slip systems in addition to basal slip plane, which increases the workability. In this research, the thermomechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy were obtained by compression testing at the various temperatures and strain rates. Optical microscopy and EBSD were used to study the microstructural behavior such as misorientation distribution and dynamic recrystallization. The results were correlated to the hardening and the softening of the alloy. The experimental data in conjunction with a physical explanation provide the optimal conditions for net-shape forging under hot or warm temperatures through control of the grain refinement and the working conditions.
To predict and evaluate metallurgical and mechanical behavior of th welds, it is essential to understand solidification behavior and microstructural evolution experienced in the welds, neither of which follows the equilibrium phase diagram because of rapid heating and cooling conditions. Metallurgical phenomena in austenitic stainless steel fusion welds, types 304, 309S, 316L, 321 and 304N, were investigated in this study. Autogenous GTA welding was performed on weld coupons, and primary solidification mode and phase distribution were investigated from the welds. Varestraint test was employed to evaluate solidification cracking susceptibilities of the alloys. GTA weld fusion zones in type 304, 321 and 304N stainless steels experienced primary ferrite solidification while those in type 309S primary austenite solidification. Type 316L exhibited a mixed type of primary ferrite and primary austenite solidification. The primary solidification mode strongly depended on $Cr_{eq}/Ni_{eq}$ ratio. In terms of solidification cracking susceptibility, type 309S that solidified as primary austenite exhibited high cracking susceptibility while the alloys experienced primary ferrite solidification showed low cracking susceptibility. The relative ranking in solidification cracking susceptibility was type 304=type 304N < type 321 < type 316L < type 309S.
Effects of aging treatment on the microstructural evolution of a rapidly solidified Al-Li-Cu alloy were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It was found that the precipitation sequence was: supersaturated solid solution ${\alpha}^{\prime}$${\rightarrow}$ metastable ${\delta}^{\prime}$ + stable precipitate $T_1$${\rightarrow}$ stable precipitates ${\delta}+T_1$. Two exothermic and two endothermic peaks are detected by DSC analysis. The two exothermic and endothermic peaks corresponded to ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and ${\delta}+T_1$ precipitation and dissolution reactions respectively. The enthalpy of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation decreased with increasing of aging temperature and time until the finishing point of precipitation. The activation energy for precipitation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ was measured as 80KJ/mol and the energy for dissolution was 93KJ/mol. These values arc higher than those of AI-Li binary alloy. Peak hardness value (Hv 170) was obtamed at $210^{\circ}C$ for 1hr aging treatment which coincided with finishing point of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation.
Reinforced aluminum alloy base composites have become increasingly popular for engineering applications, since they usually possess several desirable properties. Recently, Warm Accumulative Roll Bonding (WARB) process has been used as a new novel process to fabricate particle reinforced metal matrix composites. In the present study, TiO2 particles are used as reinforcement in aluminum metal matrix composites fabricated through warm accumulative roll bonding process. Firstly, the raw aluminum alloy 1060 strips with TiO2 as reinforcement particle were roll bonded to four accumulative rolling cycles by preheating for 5 min at 300℃before each cycle. The mechanical and bonding properties of composites have been studied versus different volume contents of TiO2 particles by tensile test, peeling test and vickers micro-hardness test. Moreover, the fracture surface and peeling surface of samples after the tensile test and peeling test have been studied versus different amount of TiO2 volume contents by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the strength and the average vickers micro-hardness of composites improved by increasing the volume content of TiO2 particles and the amount of their elongation and bonding strength decreased significantly.
Electromigration test of flip chip solder bump is performed at $140^{\circ}C$ C and $4.6{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ conditions in order to compare electromigration with thermomigration behaviors by using electroplated Sn-3.5Ag solder bump with Cu under-bump-metallurgy. As a result of measuring resistance with stressing time, failure mechanism of solder bump was evaluated to have four steps by the fail time. Discrete steps of resistance change during electromigration test are directly compared with microstructural evolution of cross-sectioned solder bump at each step. Thermal gradient in solder bump is very high and the contribution of thermomigration to atomic flux is comparable with pure electromigration effect.

Silver nanoparticles were formed on silica substrates through thin film dewetting at high temperature. The microstructural and morphological evolution of the particles were characterized as a function of processing variables such as initial film thickness, annealing time, and temperature. Silver thin films were deposited onto the silica using a pulsed laser deposition system and annealed in reducing atmosphere to induce agglomeration of the films. The film thicknesses before dewetting were in the range of 5 to 25 nm. A noticeable agglomeration occurs with annealing at temperatures higher than $300^{\circ}C$, and higher annealing temperature increases particle size uniformity for the same film thickness sample. Average particle size linearly correlates to the film thickness, but it does not strongly depend on annealing temperature and time, although threshold temperature for complete dewetting increases with an increase of film thickness. Lower annealing temperature develops faceted surface morphology of the silver particles by enhancing the growth of the low index crystal plane of the particles.
The effect of cold rolling on the microstructural evolution in 22Cr-0.2N micro-duplex stainless steel was investigated. The 22Cr-xNi-yMn-0.2N duplex stainless steel plates with various Ni and Mn contents were fabricated. The steels were vacuum induction melted and hot rolled, followed by annealing treatment at the temperature range of $1000-1100^{\circ}C$, in which both the austenite and ferrite phases were stable. The volume fraction of the ferrite phase depending on the alloy compositions of Ni and Mn increased with an increase in the annealing temperature. Grain growth in the ferrite phase occurred markedly after cold rolling followed by annealing, while fine recrystallised grains were still found in the austenite phase. A large number of martensite laths was found in the microstructure of cold rolled steels, which should be formed by strain-induced martensite from the austenite phase. The intersections of stacking faults were revealed by TEM observation. The volume fraction of the martensite phase increased with an increase of the reduction ratio by cold rolling.
