  • In this paper, the open ring type DGS(Defected Ground Structure) resonator, applicable to MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit), is proposed to improve phase noise characteristics of RF oscillator. This resonator is planar type, therefore, it easy to design miniaturrized., and takes relatively high Q value. Modeling the equivalent parameter of resonator is needed, when designing the RF oscillator with resonator. The mathematical method to solve the equivalent parameter of the resonator from the measured results of resonator is introduced in this paper. To verify the method, DGS resonator with 5.8 GHz center frequency is fabricated, for measuring characteristics and calculating the equivalent parameter. The result from this process is compared with the data of the ADS simulation, and as a result both were identical.

  • This study presents a new, simple method for improving the front-to-back (F/B) ratio of a microstrip patch antenna (MSA) based on surface wave suppression. The back radiation of the MSA is significantly reduced by using the meandered ground plane edges and placing split-ring resonators (SRRs) in the middle of the meandered slots. By loading SRRs near the center of the meandered ground plane edges, some parts of the diffracted back-lobe power density can be reduced further. Compared to the F/B ratio of a conventional MSA with a full ground plane of the same size, an improved F/B ratio of 18 dB has been achieved experimentally for our proposed MSA.

  • In this article, new microstrip slow-wave bandpass filters using open loop resonator loaded with inter-digital capacitive fingers is proposed. The filter features not only compact in size, but also exhibits spurious stop-band rejection. Filters of this type with elliptic function and Chebyshev response are demonstrated. There is good agreement between experimental and full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation results.

  • In this paper, the split-ring DGS resonator is proposed and its equivalent circuit are analyzed to design the low pass filter. Compared with the conventional dumbell DGS cell, this structure has a flat fluctuation in low frequency range and a sharp slop at edge frequency. The out-band suppression of the SRR-DGS cell can be improved by placing the open stubs on the conductor line which operates as parallel capacitances. Making use of equivalent circuit analytical method, the characteristics of the improved SRR DGS cell are investigated and applied to design compact low pass filter, which has a low in-band loss, sharp slop and high suppression of more than 35dB within a wide out-band frequency range. The dependence of the transmission characteristic on the dimension of a split ring, such as side-length and split-gap, is analyzed in detail. In addition, an improved SRR DGS cell model with open stubs loaded on the conductor line is then presented to improve the out-band suppression. By using the equivalent-circuit analytical method, an S-band microstrip low-pass filter with perfect low-pass characteristic and high out-band suppression is designed and fabricated.

  • In this paper, broadband voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using electronically controlled metamaterial transmission line based on varactor-loaded split-ring resonator (VLSRR) is presented. First, it is demonstrated that VLSRR coupled to microstrip line can lead to metamaterial transmission line with tuning capability. The negative effective permeability is provided by the VLSRR in a narrow band above the resonant frequency, which can be bias controlled by virtue of the presence of varactor diodes. The VCO with 1.8 V power supply has phase noise of $-108.84\;{\sim}\;-106.84\;dBc/Hz$ @ 100 Hz in the tuning range, $5.47\;{\sim}\;5.84\;GHz$. The figure of merit (FOM) called power-frequency-tuning-normalized (PFTN) is 20.144 dB.

  • In this paper, microstrip ring with a narrow gap is characterized and used as a tunable microwave bandgap (MBG) structure. The center frequency of MBG is mainly determined by the mean circumference of the ring and coincides with odd mode resonance frequency of the ring resonator. The stop band formation by the proposed microstip MBG ring is due to the reflection of electromagnetic waves at the narrow gap introduced in the ring, and the reactive component mounted on the gap makes the stop band vary according to its value. The mounting of capacitor (inductor) is observed to decrease (increase) the center frequency of the stop band. The varactor-mounted microstrip MBG ring is expected to be useful in microwave switches and microwave amplifier circuits.

  • Atmospheric-pressure plasmas are used in a variety of materials processes. The lifetime of most atmospheric-pressure plasma sources is limits by electrode erosion due to energetic ion bombardment. These drawbacks were solved recently by several microplasma sources based on microstrip structure, which are more efficient and less prone to perturbations than other microplasma sources. In this work, we propose microplasma sources based on strip line and microstrip line, developed for the generation of microplasmas even in atmospheric air and analyzes these systems with microwave field simulation via comparative study with two previous microwave sources (Microstrip Spit Ring Resonator (MSRR), Microstrip Structure Source (MSS)).

  • In this paper, a new method to enhance the stop bandwidth of the compact microstrip bandstop filter based on split ring resonator(SRR) was proposed. To achieve wide stop bandwidth, we incorporated the SRR within the circular etched pattern of the defected ground structure(DGS). By incorporating the SRR within the circular etched pattern, a high magnetic coupling between SRR and signal line can be achieved. The high magnetic coupling enables the proposed structure to achieve a wide stop bandwidth. To verify the feasibility of the proposed structure, the proposed bandstop filter was compared with conventional bandstop filter employing SRRs which have been etched at both sides of the signal line. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed structure provides an enhanced stop bandwidth compared with the conventional structure.
