  • In this paper we addressed the basic concept of microstepping, analyzed the combined effect of the motor detent torque and the current profile, and implemented a microstepping drive system using an one-chip microprocessor, power MOSFET's, and a 1.8 degree bifilar-wound hybrid-type step motor excited by a bipolar drive. Experimental results show that microstepping produces greater resolution, eliminates resonant step loss, and reduces motor vibrations.

  • This paper presents a compensative microstepping based position control with passive nonlinear adaptive observer for permanent magnet stepper motor. Due to the resistance uncertainties, a position error exists in the steady-state, and a ripple of position error appears during operation. The compensative microstepping is proposed to remedy this problem. The nonlinear controller guarantees the desired currents. The passive nonlinear adaptive observer is designed to estimate the phase resistances and the velocity. The closed-loop stability is proven using input to state stability. Simulation results show that the position error in the steady-state is removed by the proposed method if the persistent excitation conditions are satisfied. Furthermore, the position ripple is reduced, and the Lissajou curve of the phase currents is a circle.

  • Stepper motor is widely used in positioning applications due to its durability and high torque to inertia ratio as well as low cost and ability to be easily controlled with open-loop. Due to increased resolution of position control and improved stability of motion control, microstepping has drawn attention in industry since it was introduced in 1970s. With the increase in computational power and decrease in cost of embedded processors in recent years, drives and control systems for stepper motors have become more sophisticate than ever. Thus, closed-loop control methods have been developed to improve the performance of the stepper motors. In this paper, we review not only basic principles of conventional control methods used for stepper motors but also that of microstepping control. In addition, we surveyed recent development in nonlinear control methods applied to stepper motors. The nonlinear control methods are presented in the view of Lyapunov stability. Nonlinear torque disturbance observer, sliding mode control, and nonlinear phase compensation are also presented.

  • This paper describes method of microstepping current control for linear pulse moor. The control method witch electrically subdivides 1 step of a LPM 125 micro step is realized using micro-step algorithm. The resolution of the system for microstepping is improved also by microstep control of driving current, which is followed by the increase of microstep subdivision coefficient, the precise position and velocity control of LPM can be realized and stabilization of the system is improved.

  • This paper describes a study of a stabilisation scheme of a stepping motor in the driving systems of the Fiber Optic Gyrocompass absolutely required a constant speed and a precise position control with fine step angle. The new stabilisation scheme combining microstepping control and frequency modulation is developed which enables the experimental machine to be capable of stable running to a stepping frequency in the range 5 times the open-loop stall frequency.

  • This paper described the forces analysis of a hybrid linear pulse motor (HLPM) with high accuracy and repeatability. The HLPM is fed from a phase current by microstepping drive. The finite element method (FEM) is employed for calculating the force. The forces between mover(forcer) and stator(platen) have been calculated using the virtual work method. The detent force, rate of tooth width to tooth pitch and magnetic saturation were analyzed to considered the distortion characteristics of static thrust. The thrust to displacement produced a high pulsating force while the normal force is much higher than the thrust force.
