  • This research is devoted to analyzing mechanical-thermal post-buckling behavior of a micro-size beam reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs) based on geometric imperfection effects. Graphene platelets have three types of dispersion within the structure including uniform-type, linear-type and nonlinear-type. The micro-size beam is considered to be perfect (ideal) or imperfect. Buckling mode shape of the micro-size beam has been assumed as geometric imperfection. Modified couple stress theory has been used for describing scale-dependent character of the beam having micro dimension. Via an analytical procedure, post-buckling path of the micro-size beam has been derived. It will be demonstrated that nonlinear buckling characteristics of the micro-size beam are dependent on geometric imperfection amplitude, thermal loading, graphene distribution and couple stress effects.

  • Experiments on evaporative spray cooling on the square plate heaters with plain or micro-porous coated surfaces were performed in this study. Micro-porous coated surfaces were made by using DOM [Diamond particle, Omegabond 101, Methyl-Ethyl-Keton] method. In case of purely air-jet cooling, the micro-porous coating doesn't affect the cooling capacity. In spray cooling three different flow patterns (complete wetting, evaporative wetting, dryout) are observed on both plain and micro-porous coated surfaces. The effects of various operating conditions, such as water flow rate, particle size, and coating thickness were investigated on the micro-porous coated surfaces. It is found that the level of surface wetting is an important factor to determine the performance of spray cooling. It depends on the balance between absorbed liquid amount by capillary force over porosity and the evaporative amount. The micro-porous coated surface has largest cooling capacity, especially in the evaporative wetting zone. It is found that the effects of liquid flow rate and coating thickness are significant in evaporative wetting zone, but are not in complete wetting and dryout zones.

  • Evaporation heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$/propane mixtures in horizontal smooth and micro-fin tubes have been investigated by experiment. The experiments were carried out for several test conditions of mass fluxes, heat fluxes, compositions of $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures and tube geometries. Direct heating method was used for supplying heat to the refrigerant where the test tube was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. Heat transfer coefficient data during evaporation process of $CO_2$/propane mixtures were measured for 5 m long smooth and micro-fin tubes with outer diameters of 5 mm, respectively. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 318 to 997 $kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes of 6 to 20 $kW/m^2$ and for several mixture compositions (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 100/0 by wt% of $CO_2$/propane). The differences of heat transfer characteristics between smooth and micro-fin tubes for various compositions of $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures and the effect of mass flux, and heat flux on enhancement factor (EF) and penalty factor (PF) were presented.

  • Thermo-mechanical vibration characteristics of in homogeneousporous functionally graded (FG) micro/nanobeam subjected to various types of thermal loadings are investigated in the present paper based on modified couple stress theory with consideration of the exact position of neutral axis. The FG micro/nanobeam is modeled via a refined hyperbolic beam theory in which shear deformation effect is verified needless of shear correction factor. A modified power-law distribution which contains porosity volume fraction is used to describe the graded material properties of FG micro/nanobeam. Temperature field has uniform, linear and nonlinear distributions across the thickness. The governing equations and the related boundary conditions are derived by Extended Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying an analytical solution which satisfies various boundary conditions. A comparison study is performed to verify the present formulation with the known data in the literature and a good agreement is observed. The parametric study covered in this paper includes several parameters such as thermal loadings, porosity volume fraction, power-law exponents, slenderness ratio, scale parameter and various boundary conditions on natural frequencies of porous FG micro/nanobeams in detail.

  • An experimental Investigation of the basic characteristics of a micro-cantilever sensor was performed by inspecting the amplitude and frequency characteristics of a commercial tuning fork (TF). Application of acetone and ethanol with a volume of $1{\mu}l$ on the tine of a vibrating tuning fork causes immediate response in its amplitude and frequency characteristics. It has been shown that the tuning fork has ability to recognize a chemical agent with high sensitivity. The theoretical sensitivity of mass loading is in the range of $\~0.1Hz/ng$. Quartz tuning forks are routinely made using standard microfabrication process, thus suggesting the possibility of microfabrication of micro quart sensors.

  • In this study, a 3-DOF XYZ micro parallel manipulator utilizing compliance mechanism is developed and analyzed. In so doing, a matrix method is used to rapidly solve displacements of the designed kinematic structure, and then kinematic characteristics of the developed manipulator are analyzed. Finally, the design analysis of the kinematic characteristics by changing hinge thickness and structure to improve workspace and translation motion is performed to show that the performance of the developed manipulator is relatively superior to the other similar kind of manipulators.

  • The design methods of mechanical systems are largely classified into deterministic methods and stochastic methods. In deterministic methods, design parameters are assumed to have fixed values. On the other hand, in stochastic methods, design parameters are assumed to be statistically distributed. When a stochastic method is employed, statistical characteristics of the populations of design variables are assumed to be known. However, very often, it is almost impossible or very expensive to obtain the statistical characteristics of the populations. Therefore a sample survey method is usually employed for stochastic methods. This paper describes the procedure of estimating the statistical characteristics of populations by employing sample data sets. An example of AFM micro cantilever beam is employed to show the effectiveness of the procedure.

  • The mechanical as well as tribological characteristics of coating films as thin as a few nm become more crucial as applications in micro-systems grow. Especially, the amorphous carbon film has a potential to be used as a protective layer for micro-systems. In this work, quantitative evaluation of nano-indentation, scratching, and wear tests were performed on the 7nm thick amorphous carbon film using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). It was shown that AFM-based nano-indentation using a diamond coated tip can be feasibly utilized for mechanical characterization of ultra-thin films. Also, it was found that the critical load where the failure of the carbon film occurred was about 18${\mu}$N by the ramp load scratch test. Finally, the wear experimental results showed that the quantitative wear rate of the carbon film ranged 10$\^$-9/~10$\^$-8/ ㎣ /N cycle. These experimental methods can be effectively utilized for a better understanding the mechanical and tribological characteristics at the nano-scale.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the spray characteristics on the etching characteristics for the optimization of etching process in the micro fabrication industry. The etching characteristics such as etching rate and etching factor were investigated under different etching conditions. To compare with the etching characteristic, the spray characteristics such as droplet size and velocity were measured by PDA system. The etching rate was increased in case of high spray pressure and in the region of spray center. The etching factor was increased with decrease in the distance from nozzle tip and increase in the etchant temperature. It was found that the spray characteristics were correlated with the etching characteristics.

  • In this study, the general thermal and flow characteristics of flat tube with micro-channels has been studied and the correlation of Nusselt number and friction factor is proposed. The optimal flat tube geometry is determined by optimal design process. It is assumed to be a three dimensional laminar flow in the analysis of thermal and flow characteristics. The periodic boundary condition is applied since the geometry of flat tube with micro-channels shows uniform cross-section in primary flow direction. Local Nusselt number is examined for thermal characteristics of each membrane, and module average Nusselt number and friction factor are calculated to determine the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in overall flat tube with microchannels. The correlations between Nusselt number and friction factor are given by Reynolds number, aspect ratio of membranes, and the width of flat tube. ALM (Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier) method is applied to the correlations to determine an optimal shape of flat tube. It is shown that the optimal aspect ratio of flat tube is approximately 1.0, irrespective of the width of flat tube and Reynolds number.
