A numerical method is presented for computing unsteady incompressible two-phase flows with immersed solids. The method is based on a level set technique for capturing the phase interface, which is modified to satisfy a contact angle condition at the solid-fluid interface as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. The modified level set method is applied for numerical simulation of bubble deformation in a micro channel with a cylindrical solid block and liquid jet from a micro nozzle.
Reduction of acoustic loads of space launch vehicles can be achieved by acoustic absorbers satisfying strict cleanness requirements. This limited the use of general porous materials and requires non-porous sound absorbers. Micro-perforated panel absorbers(MPPA) is one of promising sound absorbers satisfying the cleanness requirement for launch vehicles. However, its applicability was limited to low sound pressure levels according to the acoustic impedance model of micro-perforated panels. In this paper the applicability of micro-perforated panel absorbers at high incident sound pressure was investigated in experimental ways. The absorption characteristics of a micro-perforated panel absorber was simulated according to its design variables, e.g., minute hole diameters and aperture ratios. It was shown that optimal design can be readily done by using proposed design charts. Experiments were conducted to measure acoustic properties of the designed micro-perforated panel absorbers. The results showed that acoustic resistance increases rapidly as incident sound pressure level does but change of acoustic reactance can be neglected in a practical point of view. This caused the decrease of peak value of absorption coefficient at high incident sound pressure level, but the amount of reduction can be accepted in practice. The major advantage of the micro-perforated panel absorber(wide absorption bandwidth) was still kept at high sound pressure level.
In-plane type micro piezoelectric micro grippers with pneumatic lines for manipulation biological cells and micro parts were designed, fabricated, and characterized. Micro grippers were fabricated through the final micro-sanding process after wafer level bonding between the etched 4' Si wafer with pneumatic channels and 4' glass wafer. Displacements between two jaws of fabricated micro grippers were linearly increased with applying voltages to piezoelectric actuator. In the case of applying 80 V, the displacement between two jaws was $160{\mu}m$. Using fabricated micro grippers, manipulation tests for biological cell and micro parts with the sizes less than $100{\mu}m$ are in process.
The aerosol content dynamics in a virtual system were investigated. The outcome was extended to monitor the mean concentration diffusion of aerosols in a predefined macro and micro scale. The data set used were wind data set from the automatic weather station; satellite data set from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer aerosol index and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer; ground data set from Aerosol robotic network. The maximum speed of the macro scale (West Africa) was less than 4.4 m/s. This low speed enables the pollutants to acquire maximum range of about 15 km. The heterogeneous nature of aerosols layer in the West African atmosphere creates strange transport pattern caused by multiple refractivity. It is believed that the multiple refractive concepts inhibit aerosol optical depth data retrieval. It was also discovered that the build-up of the purported strange transport pattern with time has enormous potential to influence higher degrees of climatic change in the long term. Even when the African Easterly Jet drives the aerosols layer at about 10 m/s, the interacting layers of aerosols are compelled to mitigate its speed to about 4.2 m/s (macro scale level) and boost its speed to 30 m/s on the micro scale level. Mean concentration diffusion of aerosols was higher in the micro scale than the macro scale level. The minimum aerosol content dynamics for non-decaying, logarithmic decay and exponential decay particulates dispersion is given as 4, 1.4 and 0 respectively.
Magnetic abrasive polishing is one of the most promising finishing methods applicable to complex surfaces. Nevertheless this process has a low efficiency when applied to very hardened materials. For this reason, EP-MAP hybrid process was developed. EP-MAP process is expected to machine complex and hardened materials. In this research, deburring process using EP-MAP hybrid process was proposed. EP-MAP deburring process is applied to micro channel, thereby it can obtain both deburring process and polishing process. EP-MAP deburring process on the micro channel was performed. Through design of experiment method, error of height in this process according to process parameter is analyzed. When the level 1 parameter A(magnetic flux density) and level 2 parameter B(electric potential), C(working gap) and level 3 parameter D(feed rate) are applied in the deburring process using EP-MAP hybrid process, it provides optimum result of EP-MAP hybrid deburring process.
In this paper, a methodology was proposed to reduce the electrical level and spatial size of the smart grid with distributed generations (DGs) to a scale in which the electrical phenomena and control strategies for disturbances on the smart grid could be safely and freely experimented and observed. Based on the design methodology, a micro smart grid simulator with a substation transformer capacity of 190VA, voltage level of 19V, maximum breaking current of 20A and size of $2{\times}2m^2$ was designed by reducing the substation transformer capacity of 45MVA, voltage level of 23kV and area of $2{\times}2km^2$ of the smart grid to over one thousandth, and also reducing the maximum breaking current of 12kA of the smart grid to 1/600. It was verified that the proposed design methodology and designed micro smart grid simulator were very effective by identifying how all of the fault currents are limited to within the maximum breaking current of 20A, and by confirming that the maximum error between the fault currents obtained from the fault analysis method and the simulation method is within 1.8% through the EMTP-RV simulation results to the micro smart grid simulator model.

Thermopiezoelectric method, using poly silicon heater and a piezoelectric sensor, was proposed for writing and reading in a probe based data storage system. Resistively heated tip writes data bits while scanning over a polymer media and piezoelectric sensor reads data bits from the self-generated charges induced by the deflection of the cantilever. 34${\times}$34 array of thermopiezoelectric nitride cantilevers were fabricated by a single step wafer level transfer method. We analyzed the noise level of the charge amplifier and measured the noise signal. With the sensor and the charge amplifier 20mn of deflection could be detected at a frequency of 10KHz. Reading signal was obtained from the cantilever array and the sensitivity was calculated.
A three dimensional linear frequency-domain lifting surface panel method was used for the aerodynamic analysis of axial flow type micro-fans. As proven by the duct modeling, the tip clearance of the micro-fans tested is large enough to ignore the calculated effect of the duct system. As the numerical results and experimental data agreed well in the operating point region, the method was applicable in the parametric studies to determine the design parameters of axial flow fans. Experiments on micro-fans were carried out based on KS B 6311. The newly designed micro-fan showed improvements in both static pressure rise and volumetric flow rate compared to the existing fans at a given operating condition. No detection of surging and the smooth characteristic curve proved the improvement in performance. To reduce the fan noise in the fan design, it was necessary to make use of the frequency spectrum analysis data. Measurement of sound pressure level for micro-fans was conducted based on KS B 6361 and KS A 0705. The peak - which occurs at blade passage frequency and its higher harmonics due to the fan noise - was not detected. This justifies the design methodology of the blade.
