In the present study, we employed the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) system to visualize the blood flow field with $1{\times}1{\mu}m^2$ spatial resolution. Based on the confocal microscopic image of red blood cells (RBCs), we performed the velocity vector field measurement and evaluated characteristics of cell migration from the cell depleted layer thickness calculation. The rat and mouse's blood were supplied into a micro glass tubes in vitro. The line scanning rate of confocal microscopy was 15 kHz for a $500{\times}500$ pixels image. As a result, the red blood cell itself can be used as a tracer directly without any kind of invasive tracer particle to get the velocity vector field of blood flow by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique.
Through Korean high speed train development project "G7 Leading Technology Development Project" from 1996 to 2002, HSR-350X has been developed. It can run the maximum operating speed of 350 km/h. Based on this technology, KTX-2 which will be served commercially has been developed till 2007. This paper introduces the aerodynamic analysis of the High-Speed EMU and shows the results of optimized aerodynamic nose shape design techniques and clean pantograph panhead original techniques study. These are the important parts of developments for high speed train which maximum speed is 400 km/h. Especially for decrease of tunnel micro pressure waves, the optimized nose area distributions were derived and the characteristics of micro pressure wave were analyzed. The robust optimized pantograph panhead shapes investigated to improve the performance and decrease the vortex flow which is thought to be its noise source. These shapes are clean and robust to external disturbances like unsteady accelerated flow or side wind was derived. Finally aerodynamic performances was verified with PIV and smog visualization by wind tunnel test.
This paper presents numerical and experimental works for simultaneous pumping and mixing small liquid using asymmetric microelectrode arrays, based on AC electroosmotic flows. To this end, four arrangements of electrode pairs were considered with diagonal/herringbone shapes. Numerical simulations were made of three-dimensional geometries by using the linear theory. The results indicated that the helical flow motions induced by the electrode arrays play a significant role in the mixing enhancement. The pumping performance was influenced by the slip velocity at the center region of the channel compared to that near the side walls. To validate the numerical predictions, the microfluidic devices were made through MEMS. The flow rate was obtained by using micro PIV, increasing the applied frequency. The electrolyte was potassium chloride solution. The flow patterns above electrodes were visualized to see lateral flow for mixing. The experimental results showed good agreements with the numerical predictions.

The Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) is a well-established instrument used for identifying, enumerating, classifying and sorting cells by their physical and optical characteristics. For a miniaturized FACS device, a disposable plastic microchip has been developed which has a hydrodynamic focusing chamber using soft lithography. As the characteristics of the spatially confined sample stream have an effect on sample throughput, detection efficiency, and the accuracy of cell sorting, systematic fluid dynamic studies are required. Flow visualization is conducted with a laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and three-dimensional flow structure of the focused sample stream is reconstructed from 2D slices acquired at $1\mutextrm{m}$ intervals in depth. It was observed that the flow structure in the focusing chamber is skewed by unsymmetrical velocity profile arising from trapezoidal cross section of the microchannel. For a quantitative analysis of a microscopic flow structure, Confocal Micro-PIV system has been developed to evaluate the accelerated flow field in the focusing chamber. This study proposes a method which defines the depth of the measurement volume using a detection pinhole. The trajectories of red blood cells (RBCs) and their interactions with surrounding flow field in the squeezed sample stream are evaluated to find optimal shape of the focusing chamber and fluid manipulation scheme for stable cell transporting, efficient detection, and sorting
Oxygen sensitive functional particles(OSParticle) were fabricated by three different methods for using the particles as oxygen sensors and PIV tracers. The used methods were a physical coating method, an ion-exchange method and a dispersion polymerization method. The physical coating method is dipping $SiO_2$ hollow particles into dye solution then drying. This method is very simple, but particles are not uniform in diameter and luminescence. The particles fabricated by the ion-exchange method have very uniform diameter and well doped. However, it can not be used in water since the particles are hydrophobic. In case of the dispersion polymerization method, the diameter of OSParticles is quite uniform. The diameter of OSParticles can be changed by controlling the quantity of AIBN (2,2'-azobis isobutyronitrile). For the purpose of dissolved oxygen concentration measurement in micro scale water flows, the dispersion polymerized OSParticles turn out to be the most superior functional particles. The luminescent intensity of OSParticles was tested with the variation of dissolved oxygen concentration in water samples. As a result, the luminescent intensity of OSParticles is monotonically decreased with increasing DO (Dissolved oxygen) concentration of water.

In this study, the performance of a real-time micro telescopic monitoring system is evaluated, in which an artificial neural network is adopted for the diagnoses of vibratory bodies, such as solid piping system or machinery. The structural vibration was measured by a non-contact remote sensing method, in which images of a high-speed high-definition camera were used. The structural vibration data that can be obtained by the PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique were used for training the neural network. The structures of the neural network are dynamically changed and their performances are evaluated for the constructed diagnosis system. Optimized structures of the neural network are proposed for real-time diagnosis for the piping system. It was experimentally verified that the performances of the neural network used for real-time monitoring are influenced by the types of the vibration data, such as minimum, maximum and average values of the vibration data. It concludes that the time-mean values are most appropriate for monitoring the piping system.
The effect of capillary cross-section geometry on evaporation is investigated in terms of the meniscus shape, evaporation rate and evaporation-induced flow for circular, square and rectangular cross-sectional capillaries. The shapes of water and ethanol menisci are not much different from each other in square and rectangular capillaries even though the surface tension of water is much larger than that of ethanol. On the other hand, the shapes of water and ethanol menisci are very different from each other in circular capillary. The averaged evaporation fluxes in circular and rectangular capillaries are measured by tracking the meniscus position. At a given position, the averaged evaporation flux in rectangular capillaries is much larger than that in circular capillary with comparable hydraulic diameter. The flow near the evaporating meniscus is also measured using micro-PIV, so that the rotating vortex motion is observed near the evaporating ethanol and methanol menisci except for the case of methanol meniscus in rectangular capillary. This difference is considered to be due to the existence of corner menisci at the four comers.
The arteries are very important in cardiovascular system and easily adapt to varying flow and pressure conditions by enlarging or shrinking to meet the given hemodynamic demands. The blood flow in arteries is dominated by unsteady flow phenomena due to heart beating. In certain circumstances, however, unusual hemodynamic conditions cause an abnormal biological response and often induce circulatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis and inflammation. Therefore quantitative analysis of the unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics in the arterial blood vessels plays important roles in diagnosing these circulatory diseases. In order to verify the hemodynamic characteristics, in-vivo measurements of blood flow inside the extraembryonic arterial bifurcation cascade of chicken embryo were carried out using a micro-PIV technique. To analyze the unsteady pulsatile flow temporally, the (low images of RBCs were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera at 250fps with a spatial resolution of $30{\mu}m\times30{\mu}m$ in the whole blood vessels. In this study, the unusual flow conditions such as flow separation or secondary flow were not observed in the arterial bifurcations. However, the vorticity has large values in the inner side of curvature of vessels. In addition, the mean velocity in the arterial blood vessel was decreased and pulsating frequency obtained by FFT analysis of velocity data extracted in front of the each bifurcation was also decreased as the bifurcation cascaded.
Ultrasonic Vibrator is designed to achieve the maximum vibration amplitude at 30 kHz by in-cluding a horn (diameter, 40 mm), mechanical vibration amplifier at the top of the ultrasonic vibrator in the system and making the complete system resonate. In addition, it is experimentally visualized by particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) that the acoustic streaming velocity in the gap is at maximum when the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary plate agrees with the multiples of half-wavelength of the ultrasonic wave. This fact results from the resonance of the sound wave and the theoretical analysis of that is also accomplished and verified by experiment. It is observed that the magnitude of the acoustic streaming dependent upon the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary plate possibly changes due to the measurement of the average velocity fields of the acoustic streaming induced by the ultrasonic vibration at resonance and non-resonance. There exists extremely small average velocity at non-resonant gaps while the relatively large average velocity exists at resonant gaps compared with non-resonant gaps. It also reveals that there should be larger axial turbulent intensity at the hub region of the vibrator and at the edge of it in the resonant gap where the air streaming velocity is maximized and the flow phenomena is conspicuous than that at the other region. Because the variation of the acoustic streaming velocity at resonant gap is more distinctive than that at non-resonant gap, shear stress increases more in the resonant gap and is also maximized at the center region of the vibrator except the local position of center (r〓0). At the non-resonant gap there should be low values of vorticity distribution, but in contrast to the non-resonant gap, high and negative values of it exist at the center region of the vibrator with respect to the radial direction and in the vicinity of the middle region with respect to the axial direction. Acoustic streaming is noise-free due to the ultrasonic vibration and maintenance-free because of the absence of moving parts. Moreover, the proposed method by acoustic streaming can be utilized to the nano and micro-electro mechanical systems as a driving mechanism in addition to the augmentation of the streaming velocity.
