There are few studies on air pollution due to vehicle emissions in spite of the importance of this field. Therefore, this study describes trends and suggests implications through analysis relating to existing emissions research. This study has been divided into three areas. The first part is about estimating vehicle emissions. In this part, the authors analyze limits in ways of calculating emissions in the existing macroscopic view and then suggest the development of a model for calculating emissions considering velocity and acceleration. These variables are a function of traffic and individual driving behavior in the microscopic view. The second part is about management techniques for reducing vehicle emissions. The traffic management techniques for reducing vehicle emissions should conform to regional characteristics. The final part is about traffic operation for reducing vehicle emissions. The authors suggest the development of a micro-simulator and then the development of strategies for traffic operation. It is necessary to design better models estimating emissions and then, using real time data, to make a monitoring system simulating emission rates. This study serves as a literature review to make a foundation for further research about emissions research for transportation engineering.

With the progress of micro actuator technology, studies on the development of micro air flapping wing vehicles are actively undergoing. In the present study, the changes of both lift and thrust characteristics of the wings are investigated using a boundary element method. Lift of the heaving wing is not generated when the wing is beating with smaller frequencies than 1 Hz. Thrust increases with amplitude and frequency. As the wing's taper and aspect ratios increase, both lift and thrust also increase. Results on the pitching oscillation and flapping motion will be included in the future work.

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are useful devices to assess new features that may be utilized in a full size aircraft to enhance performance or to increase endurance. In this article, sources for energy saving in the micro air vehicles are initially addressed. Then, by specifying the important parameters on energy consumption of an aircraft, a feasibility study is conducted to assess the benefit of using solar cells to increase flight endurance. Next, a new solar cell has been designed and optimized for MAVs. This cell consists of a multiple quantum wells for which the quantum factor and the absorption coefficient are calculated by solving the Shrodinger equation using MATLAB software. Then, the manner and influence of MAVs parameters using the solar cells are examined to suggest optimal planform for different purposes. In order to increase flight endurance, it is noted that by using appropriate planform and the optimized solar cells, flight endurance can be increased by more than 30 percent.

The air data system(ADS) was developed for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) in this paper. Generally, the ADS helps flight control computer(FCC) to control the UAV above the stall speed and to hold the given altitude. The accurate measurement of airspeed and altitude of UAV is important because it indicates a flight performance and assures a safe flight. The ADS consists of MEMS pressure sensors, a lowpass filter, a micro controller unit and a pitot-tube. The ADS errors were reduced by pressure and temperature compensation of MEMS sensors. Finally, the altitude and airspeed data of the ADS was compared with GPS data in the flight test.

The flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) in this study utilizes the cambered wings made of quite flexible material. Similar to the flying creatures, the present cambered wing uses three different materials at its leading edge, vein, and membrane. And it is constrained in various conditions. Since passive rotation uses the flexible nature of the wing, it is important to select an appropriate material for a wing. A three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction solver is developed for a realistic modeling of the cambered wing. Then a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance in terms of the elastic modulus of leading edge and vein. Consequently, the elastic modulus plays a key role in enhancing the aerodynamic performance of FW-MAVs.

Recently, studies have been carried out to develop unmanned Micro Air Vehicles(MAVs) that can search and monitor inside buildings during urban warfare or rescue operations in hazardous environments. However, existing fixed-wing and rotary-wing MAVs cannot travel at extremely low or high speeds, hover in place, or change directions instantly. This has lead researches to search for other flight methods that could overcome those drawbacks. Insect flight principles and its applications to MAVs are being studied as an alternative flight method. To take flight, insects flap and rotate their wings. These wing motions allow for high maneuverability flight such as hovering, vertical take off and landing, and quick acceleration and deceleration. This paper proposes a method for designing a mechanism that reproduces hovering insect flight, the basis for all other forms of insect flight. The design of a mechanism that can reproduce the motion that causes maximum lift is proposed, the required specifications are calculated, and a method for reproducing hovering insect flight with a single motor is presented. Also, feasibility of the design was confirmed by simulation.

In this paper, geometrical optimization for newly designed flapping mechanism for insect-like micro air vehicle is presented. The mechanism uses strings to convert rotation of motor to reciprocating wing motion to reduce the total weight and inertial force. The governing algorithm of movement of the mechanism is established considering the characteristic of string that only tensile force can be acted by string, to optimize the kinematics. Modified pattern search method which is complemented to avoid converging into local optimum is adopted to the geometrical optimization of the mechanism. Then, prototype of the optimized geometry is produced and experimented to check the feasibility of the mechanism and the optimization method. The results from optimization and experiment shows good agreement in flapping amplitude and other wing kinematics. Further research will be conducted on dynamic analysis of the mechanism and detailed specification of the prototype.
The motion of birds and insects have been studied and applied to MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) and AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). Most of AUV research is focused on shape and motion of single hydrofoil. However, double hydrofoil system is mostly used in real physics. This system shows completely different hydrodynamic characteristic to single hydrofoil because of wake interaction. The goal of this study is define the trajectory of wake interaction in double hydrofoil system. Moreover, trust and efficiency of various combined motion will be demonstrated. Symmetry airfoil is used for analysis an hydrodynamic characteristic. Forward wing's plunging and pitching motion is fixed, hide wing's Heaving ratio, Pitch phase shift from forward plunging and Heaving shift is changed. This study provide necessary basic data of motion optimization for double hydrofoil system.
This paper proposes a system to synchronize the time of computers over an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network. With the proposed system, the UAVs can perform missions that require precise relative time. Also, data collected by UAVs can be fused precisely with synchronized time. In the system, to synchronize the time of all computers over the UAV network, two-step synchronization is performed. In the first step, the mission computers of the UAVs are synchronized through the server of the system. After the first step, the mission computers measure time offset between the time of the mission computers and the flight computers. The offset values are delivered to the server. In the second step, virtual time is determined by the server from the collected time offset. The measured offset is compensated by moving the synchronized time of mission computers to the reasonable virtual time. Since only the time of mission computers are controlled, any flight computers that use micro air vehicle link (MAVLink) protocol can be synchronized in the proposed system.
