  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the time series and origin of a chemical component and to compare the difference during yellow sand episodes for analysis $PM_{10}$ chemical components in the region of west in Korean Peninsula, 1999-2001. An annual mean concentration of $PM_{10}$ is $29.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$. A monthly mean and standard deviation of $PM_{10}$ concentration are very high in spring but there is no remarkably seasonal variation. Also, water soluble ionic component of $PM_{10}$ be influenced by double more total anion than total cation, be included $NO_{3}^-\;and\;SO_{4}^{2-}$ for the source of acidity and $NH_{4}^+$ to neutralize. Tracer metals of $PM_{10}$ slowly increases caused by emitted for soil and ocean (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na) and Zn, Pb, Cu, Mn for anthropogenic source. According to method of enrichment factor (E.F) and statistics, assuming that the origin of metal component in $PM_{10}$ most of element in the Earth's crust e.g. Mg, Ca, Fe originates soil and Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb derives from anthropogenic sources. The ionic component for $Na^{+}\;Cl^-,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ and Mg, Al, Ca, Fe originated by soil component largely increase during yellow sand period and then tracer metal component as Pb, Cd, Zn decrease. According to factor analysis, the first group is ionic component ($Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}$) and metal component (Na, Fe, Mn and Ni) be influenced by soil. The second group, Mg, Cr also be influenced by soil particle.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between yearly variations of climatic elements and yearly variations of productivity in sesame. In addition, correlation coefficients among yield and yield components were estimated. The data of yield and yield components were investigated for 10 years from 1992 to 2001. The meteorological data gathered at the Yeosu Weather Station for the same period were used to find out the relationships between climatic elements and productivity. Yearly variation of the amount of precipitation in July and September were large with coefficients of variation(c.v.) of 64.59, 92.47%, respectively, but the variation of the average temperature in June and August were relative small. Yield and plant height greatly with c. v. of 26.24, 23.41 %, respectively, 1, 000 grain weights show more or less c.v. of 3.83% and length capsule setting show still less variation. Correlation coefficients between maximun temperature in period of cultivation(from June to September) and yield are positively significant at the level of 5.1 %, respectively. Correlation coefficients amount the plant height, length capsule setting, number of capsules per plant, weight of 1, 000 grains and seed yield were positively significant at the level of 1 %, respectively. Simple linear regression equations by the least square method are estimated for number of capsules per plant(Y$_1$) and the maximun temperature in August(X) as $Y_1$=10.1255+0.1725X, and for yield(Y$_2$) and the maximun temperature in August(X) as $Y_2$=21.6151 + 1.3724X.

  • In order to monitor the impact of high temperature which is seen frequently with climate change, we investigated the monthly change in globe temperature, air temperature, mean radiant temperature and effective radiant heat flow, because the four well reflect thermal radiation from bio-meteorological aspect. Both globe temperature and air temperature showed an increasing trend every month. Compared to air temperature, globe temperature had a wider range of temperature change and was more influenced by meteorological element such as precipitation. Diurnal trends of air temperature, globe temperature and the difference between their temperature had the lowest value before the sunrise and the highest around $1300{\sim}1500$ LST, showing the typical diurnal trends. Globe temperature and the difference between their temperature had a sharp increase around $1000{\sim}1100$ LST, maintained high value until 1700 LST and then reclined, though varied by month. The difference between globe temperature and air temperature was highly dependent on the amount of precipitation and clouds. The duration in which globe temperature was higher than air temperature was the lowest in July. Therefore the amount of precipitation was the most affecting, followed by the amount of clouds and wind. In order to find out the diurnal trends of temperature in city center and city outskirts, we assumed the roof of a concrete build ing as a city center, and the grass-covered observatory of the Gimhae International Airport as city outskirts. The diurnal trends of temperature in the two sites showed a strong correlation. The highest and lowest temperature also had the same trend.

  • This study examines the prevailing synoptic-scale mechanisms favorable for long-lived summer Persistent Positive Temperature Anomalies (PPTAs) as well as winter PPTAs in the United States. Such long-lived PPTAs usually occur in the south-central region of the United States in summer, but in the southwestern part of the United States in winter. Composite analyses of surface and pressure level data demonstrate that the formation of both winter and summer PPTAs is closely related to the movement of subtropical high pressure systems in the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, respectively. The occurrence of long-lived summer PPTAs usually coincides with an extremely stable atmospheric condition caused by persistent blocking by mid- to upper-tropospheric anticyclones. Significant surface forcing is also easily identified through relatively high Bowen ratios at the surface. Warm air advection is, however, weak and appears to be an insignificant element in the formation of long-lived summer PPTAs. On the other hand, synergistic warming effects associated with adiabatic heating under an anticyclonic blocking system as well as significant warm air advection characterize the favorable synoptic environments for long-lived winter PPTAs. However, the impact of surface forcing mechanisms on winter PPTAs is insignificant.

  • In this paper, quality control (QC) is applied to each meteorological element of weather data collected from seven IoT sensors such as temperature. In addition, we propose a method for estimating the data regarded as error by means of machine learning. The collected meteorological data was linearly interpolated based on the basic QC results, and then machine learning-based QC was performed. Support vector regression, decision table, and multilayer perceptron were used as machine learning techniques. We confirmed that the mean absolute error (MAE) of the machine learning models through the basic QC is 21% lower than that of models without basic QC. In addition, when the support vector regression model was compared with other machine learning methods, it was found that the MAE is 24% lower than that of the multilayer neural network and 58% lower than that of the decision table on average.

  • This study was conducted to investigate inorganic nutrient contents in spur leaf and shoot leaf of 'Niitaka' pear during the growing season and leaf inorganic nutrient contents as influenced by meteorological elements. The contents of N, P, K, and Mg were decreased in spur leaf during their vegetative growth, while Ca and Mn increased. The contents of N, P, K, Mg, and Fe showed no differences between spur leaf and shoot leaf. However Ca, Mn, Zn, and Cu contents were higher in spur leaf than those in shoot leaf, but B content was lower in spur leaf than those in shoot leaf. The content of N in shoot leaf was positively correlated with mean temperature, whereas negatively correlated with maximum temperature. The content of P in spur leaf was negatively correlated with maximum temperature. The content of Ca in spur leaf was negatively correlated with mean temperature, whereas positively correlated with maximum and minimum temperature. The contents of Mg and B in shoot and spur leaf were positively correlated with mean temperature, whereas negatively correlated with maximum and minimum temperature. The contents of Ca and Mn showed significant differences between spur leaf and shoot leaf at mid-July to early August. These results suggest that sampling is important to distinguish between spur leaf and shoot leaf for diagnosis of nutrient conditions in pear trees.

  • Characteristics of meteorological elements were analyzed at Hwagae and Agyang where are the representative areas of Hadong green tea cultivation in Korea. An automatic weather monitoring system (AWS) and a simple data log were employed to measure meteorological data such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and wind direction and speed for 2009. The annual average air temperature of Hwagae and Agyang was 14.5 and 14.2, respectively, showing the warmest month in August ($25.4^{\circ}C$ for Hwagae and $24.9^{\circ}C$ for Agyang) and the coldest month in January ($0.3^{\circ}C$ for Hwagae and $0.2^{\circ}C$ for Agyang). Annual average of daily temperature difference (= daily maximum temperature - daily minimum temperature) was $11.3^{\circ}C$ for Hwagae and $11.1^{\circ}C$ for Agyang. Hwagae and Agyang had 62.7% and 65.3% of the annual average relative humidity, respectively. Annual precipitation was 1387 mm for Hwagae and 1793 mm for Agyang of which were higher of 605mm for Hwagae and 835 mm for Agyang compared to that in 2008. Majority of precipitation occurred between May and August, attributing 77.6% for Hwagae and 76.6% for Agyang to the annual precipitation. The annual total sunshine duration was 2054.3 hrs in Hwagae with the longest monthly sunshine duration in May (235.1 hrs) and the shortest monthly sunshine duration in July (102.5 hrs). Dominant wind direction changed seasonally from northwesterly wind in fall and winter to southeasterly wind in spring and summer. The annual average wind speed was 1.5 m $s^{-1}$ with the highest monthly wind speed of 2.0 m $s^{-1}$ in December and the lowest monthly wind speed of 1.1 m $s^{-1}$ in February. It is expected that continuous observation and assessment of meteorological data will improve our understanding of optimal environmental conditions for green tea cultivation and be used for developing models of green tea cultivation in the Hadong area.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to present a detail investigation related to structural behavior of laterally unrestrained steel cantilever roof of tribune with slender cross section. The structure is located in Tutak town in $A{\breve{g}}r{{\i}}$ and collapsed on October 25, 2015 at eastern part of Turkey is considered as a case study. This mild sloped roof structure was built from a variable I beam, and supported on steel columns of 5.5 m height covering totally $240m^2$ closed area in plan. The roof of tribune collapsed completely without any indication during first snowfall after construction at midnight a winter day, fortunately before the opening hours. The meteorological records and observations of local persons are combined together to estimate the intensity of snow load in the region and it is compared with the code specified values. Also, the wide/thickness and height/thickness ratios for flange and web are evaluated according to the design codes. Three dimensional finite element model of the existing steel tribune roof is generated considering project drawings and site investigations using commercially available software ANSYS. The displacements, principal stresses and strains along to the cantilever length and column height are given as contour diagrams and graph format. In addition to site investigation, the numerical and analytical works conducted in this study indicate that the unequivocal reasons of the collapse are overloading action of snow load intensity, some mistakes made in the design of steel cantilever beams, insufficient strength and rigidity of the main structural elements, and construction workmanship errors.

  • This study has performed the regionalization of point rainfall which has the hydrological homogeneity for regional frequency analysis of the rainfall. For the study, the recorded rainfall data were collected from 60 rainfall gauge stations distributed all over country of the Korea Meteorological Administration, and 32 rainfall characteristic elements were analyzed from the collected data. Using the principal component analysis to be data reduction technique of the multivariate analysis and the cluster analysis to be grouping technique about many of rainfall characteristic elements of each station, the regionalization of point rainfall was accomplished rationally and efficiently. As the result, hydrological homogeneous regions of point rainfall were divided by 5 regions and 3 other regions, and rainfall characteristics of divided each region were analyzed and compared relatively using regional mean values of each rainfall element data.

  • A 10.4-m high highway embankment retained behind mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls is under construction in the northeastern part of the Indian state of Bihar. The structure is constructed with compacted, micaceous, grey, silty sand, reinforced with polyester (PET) geogrids, and faced with reinforced cement concrete fascia panels. The connections between the fascia panels and the geogrids failed on several occasions during the monsoon seasons of 2007 and 2008 following episodes of heavy rainfall, when the embankment was still under construction. However, during these incidents the MSE embankment itself remained by and large stable and the collateral damages were minimal. The observational data during these incidents presented an opportunity to develop and calibrate a simple procedure for estimating rainfall induced pore water pressure development within MSE embankments constructed with backfill materials that do not allow unimpeded seepage. A simple analytical finite element model was developed for the purpose. The modeling results were found to agree with the observational and meteorological records from the site. These results also indicated that the threshold rainwater infiltration flux needed for the development of pore water pressure within an MSE embankment is a monotonically increasing function of the hydraulic conductivity of backfill. Specifically for the MSE embankment upon which this study is based, the analytical results indicated that the instabilities could have been avoided by having in place a chimney drain immediately behind the fascia panels.
