A BOD sensor was prepared with S. marcescens LSY4 and was applied for measurement of BOD values of a solution containing the standard organic pollutants. The sensor sensitivity was nearly independent of the culture time in the range of 9-16 hours. It was also affected little by the cell mass in the range of 0.22-0.75 mg $cm^{-2}$. A cyclic change in the solution pH in the range of 4-9 was accompanied by a reversible variation in the sensor sensitivity. However, the reversibility was lost when the solution pH became more acidic or more basic. Heavy metal ions lowered the sensor sensitivity, which took place more precipitously in the presence of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Ag^+$ rather than in the presence of $Zn^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$. The reduction of the sensor sensitivity was significantly attenuated by loading heavy metal ion tolerance induced strain. The $Cu^{2+}$tolerance induced strain was more efficient for the attenuation than $Zn^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$ tolerance induced strain.
The fabrication of steel structural members always involves welding process such as flux cored arc welding. Therefore, for the application of structural steels to cold regions, it is a prerequisite to clarify the service temperature of the welded joints in order to ensure the structural integrity of the welded parts. In this study, the Charpy impact test was conducted to evaluate the service temperature of structural steel weld. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The service temperatures of the weld metal, HAZ (heat affected zone) and base metal were derived by the absorbed energy and the impact test requirements; thus the applicability of the structural steels to cold regions was discussed in detail.

If Fiber Reinforced Metal Laminates(FRMLs) were delaminated, the decrease of stiffness and fiber bridging effect would result in the sudden aggravation of fatigue characteristics. It was reported that the delamination of FRMLs resulted from the crack of metal layers and that it depended on the crack growth. While cracks were made in FRMLs containing a saw-cuts under fatigue loading, cracks could be produced or not in FRMLs with circular holes under the same condition. When the FRMLs with the circular holes produce not the crack but the delamination, it is not possible to analyze it by the conventional fracture parameters expressed as the function of the crack. And so, this research suggests a new analytical model of the delamination to make the comparison of the delamination behavior possible whenever the cracks occur or not. Therefore, a new analytical model called Pseudo Crack Model(PCM) was suggested to compare the delaminations whether cracks were made or not. The relationship between the crack energy consumption rate( $E_{crack}$) and the delamination energy consumption rate( $E_{del}$) was discussed and it was also known that the effect of $E_{del}$ was larger than that of $E_{crack}$.

Reduction smelting of spent lithium-ion batteries at high temperature produces metallic alloys. Following solvent extraction of the leaching solutions of these metallic alloys with either sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, the raffinate is found to contain Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Si(IV). In this study, two cationic exchange resins (Diphonix and P204) were employed to investigate the loading behavior of these ions from synthetic sulfate and chloride solutions. Experimental results showed that Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) could be selectively loaded onto the Diphonix resin from a sulfate solution of pH 3.0. With a chloride solution of pH 6.0, Mn(II) was selectively loaded onto the P204 resin, leaving Ni(II) and Si(IV) in the effluent. Elution experiments with H2SO4 and/or HCl resulted in the complete recovery of metal ions from the loaded resin.
In a material, micro-cracks can be progressively occurred, propagated and finally lead to failure when it is subjected to cyclic or periodic loading less than its ultimate strength. This phenomenon, fatigue, is usually considered in a metal, alloy and structures under repeated loading conditions. In underground structures, a static creep behavior rather than a dynamic fatigue behavior is mostly considered. However, when compressed air is stored in a rock cavern, an inner pressure is periodically changed due to repeated in- and-out process of compressed air. Therefore mechanical properties of surrounding rock mass and an inner lining system under cyclic loading/unloading conditions should be investigated. In this study, considering an underground lined rock cavern for compressed air energy storage (CAES), the mechanical properties of a lining system, that is, concrete lining and plug under periodic loading/unloading conditions were characterized through cyclic bending tests and shear tests. From these tests, the stability of the plug was evaluated and the S-N line of the concrete lining was obtained.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of the decrease of bond strength due to increased thickness of resin base in indirect bracket bonding technique. Metal brackets were bonded to the resin blocks involving bovine lower incisors and the thickness of resin bases was increased by increments of 0.5 mm from 0.0 mm to 2.0 mm. They were divided into two groups, one group is that the thickness of resin base was increased but the loading point from the tooth surface was maintained constantly, the other group is that the loading point from the tooth surface and the resin base thickness were increased concomitantly. The shear bond strength was tested on universal testing machine and the failure patterns were assessed with the adhesive remnant index(ARI). The results were as follows: 1. When the distance from the tooth surface to the loading point was maintained constantly, shear bond strength was increased significantly according to the decrease of distance from the bracket base to the loading point and the increase of resin base thickness. 2. When the distance from the tooth surface to the loading point and the resin base thickness were increased concomitantly, shear bond strength was decreased according to the increase of resin base thickness but significant differences were ignorable. 3. There were no significant differences in ARI scores according to the change in the thickness of resin base. The results of the present study indicated that shear bond strength was not much affected by the thickness of resin base, whereas was decreased according to the increase of distance from bracket base to the loading point.

The recycling of coated cemented carbide scraps is becoming increasingly significant for the recovery of rare metals. However, coatings consisting of Group IV and V transition metal nitrides are one of the challenging factors in obtaining high-purity materials. We investigated the structural, elastic, and mechanical properties of Group IV and V transition-metal nitrides (TiN, VN, ZrN, NbN, HfN, and TaN) using first-principle calculations. Convergence tests were performed to obtain reliable calculated results. The equilibrium structures of the nitrides were in good agreement with those of a previous study, indicating the reliability of the data. Group IV transition metal nitrides show a higher covalent bonding nature. Thus, they exhibit a higher degree of brittleness than that of Group V transition metal nitrides. In contrast, Group V transition metal nitrides show weaker resistance to shear loading and more ductile behavior than Group IV transition metal nitrides because of the metallic bonds characterized by valence electron concentration. The results of the crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis showed good agreement with the shear resistance tendencies of all transition metal nitrides.
In finite element analysis of mechanical behavior of weld, typical process is first to obtain a finite element model containing residual stress by conducting welding analysis and then to examine the computational specimen for various external loading. The numerical specimen with residual stress has irregular boundary lines since one usually begins the welding analysis from a body having regular straight boundary lines and large thermal contraction takes place during cooling of weld metal. We notice that these numerical weld specimens are different from the real weld specimens as the real specimens are usually cut from a bigger weld part and consequently have straight boundaries neglecting elastic relaxation associated with the cutting. In this paper, an iterative finite element method is described to obtain a weld specimen which is bounded by straight lines. The stress distributions of two types of weld specimen, one with regular and the other with irregular boundaries, are compared to check the effect of the boundary shape. Results show that the stress distribution can be different when large plastic deformation is induced by the application of external loading. In case of elastic small deformation, the difference turns out almost negligible.
Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) continues to be a serious problem in clinical cardiology. To solve this problem, drug eluting stents (DES) with antiproliferative agents have been developed. Variable local drug delivery systems in the context of stenting require the development of stent manufacture, drug pharmacology and coating technology. We have worked on a system that integrates electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technology with the polymeric nanoparticles in DES for local drug delivery and a controlled release system. The surface morphology and drug loading amount of DES by EPD have been investigated under different operational conditions, such as operation time, voltage and the composition of media. We prepared poly-D,L-lactide-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles embedded with curcumin, which was done by a modified spontaneous emulsification method and used polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a surfactant because its carboxylic group contribute negative charge to the surface of CPNPs (?53.5 ± 5.8 mV). In the process of ‘trial and error' endeavors, we found that it is easy to control the drug loading amount deposited onto the stent while keeping uniform surface morphology. Accordingly, stent coating by EPD has a wide application to the modification of DES using various kinds of nanoparticles and drugs.
The highly accurate laser holographic interferemotry method was used to determine in what way low-magnitude forces during maxillary expansion are transmitted to the entire maxillary complex and its surrounding structures. The experiments were carried out on a dryed human skull which had a perfectly preserved, normally aligned maxillary dental arch and intact alveolar process. The skull was fixed within a constructed metal frame which ensured maximal stability of the object. The optical equipment and the object were mounted on antivibration table. Interferograms were taken on the lateral and frontal sides of the maxillary complex, using the 10mW He-Ne laser and the double-exposure method. Analysis of the fringe pattern on the recorded object surface was performed by graphically determining the deformation curves related to the bony surface in selected horizontal and vertical planes. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. The density of the interference fringes was gradually increased with the degree of expansion force. 2. Mechanical reactions on the maxillary complex, circummaxillary sutures, and surrounding bones were clearly visible, even with the lowest loading degree. 3. The amount of bone displacement was greater in application of the force after $90^{\circ}$ turn than in initial application of the same force. 4. The direction of interference fringes on the bony surface was similar at all loading degrees.
