Laboratory radiotracer experiments were conducted to determine assimilation efficiencies (AE) from ingested algal food and oxic sediment particles, uptake rates from the dissolved phase, and the efflux rates of Cd, Cr and Zn in the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea. Among three elements, AE from both algal and sediment food was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr. The AEs of tested elements from algal food (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) were consistently higher than those from sediments at a given salinity and temperature. The influence of salinity (0, 4 and 8 psu) and temperature (5, 13 and $21^{\circ}C$) on the metal AEs was not evident for most tested elements, except Cd AEs from sediment. The rate constant of metal uptake from the dissolved phase $(k_u)$ was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr in freshwater media. However, in saline water, the $(k_u)$ of Zn were greater than those of Cd. The influx rate of all tested metals increased with temperature. The efflux rate constant was greatest for Cr $(0.02\;d^{-1})$, followed by Zn $(0.010{\sim}0.017\;d^{-1})$ and $Cd\;(0.006\;d^{-1})$. The efflux rate constant for Zn in clam tissues depurated in 0 psu $(0.017\;d^{-1})$ was faster than that in 8 psu $(0.010\;d^{-1})$. Overall results showed that the variation of salinity and temperature in estuarine systems can considerably influence the metal bioaccumulation potential in the estuarine clam C. fluminea. The relatively high Cd accumulation capacity of C. fluminea characterized by the high AE, high dissolved influx rate and low efflux rate, suggested that this clam species can be used as an efficient biomonitor for the Cd contamination in freshwater and estuarine environments.
Iron uptake in mitochondria and fractionated mitochondria compartments was studied to understand iron transport in heart mitochondria. The inner membrane is most active in iron uptake. Mitochondrial uptake was dependent on iron concentration and the amount of mitochondria. Iron transport was inversely proportional to pH in the range of 6.0 to 8.0. Iron transport reached a maximum after 30 min of incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. Iron uptake was inhibited by 1 mM ATP and stimulated by 1 mM ADP. The oxidative phosphorylation inhibitor oligomycin inhibited iron uptake, but rotenone and antimycin A did not. The divalent ions $Mg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ suppressed iron uptake at $10\;{\mu}M$ and stimulated it at 1 mM. The divalent ion $Ca^{2+}$ stimulated iron uptake at $10\;{\mu}M$ and suppressed it at 1 mM, competing with iron. The uptake of calcium was stimulated by 10 to $1000\;{\mu}M$ ATP, while iron uptake was stimulated reciprocally by 10 to $1000\;{\mu}M$ ADP, suggesting that these ions have movements similar to those of ATP and ADP.
Plants grown in metal-contaminated sites have to be managed and disposed of safely even in phytoremediation because heavy metals can be transferred to other organisms through the food chain, which could result in bioaccumulation in organisms of a higher trophic level. However, if the harvested plants could be used for bioenergy, the ecological risk is reduced and phytoremediation improves economic feasibility. This study researched the effects of EDDS (Ethylenediamine disuccinate) on the heavy metal uptake performance of Brassica campetris and Sorghum biocolor, both of which have potential as bioenergy plants. The results showed that EDDS could increase Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn concentrations in the roots and shoots of both of these plants. Furthermore, EDDS reduced the metal inhibition of the S. bicolor length growth. The translocation factors (TF) of S. bicolor and B. campestris are smaller than one for all five heavy metals tested and decreased by the following order: heavy metal + EDDS > heavy metals only > uncontaminated soil. The results suggest that with regard to plant growth and metal accumulation, S. bicolor treated with EDDS is more suitable than is B. campestris for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with multiple metal species.
The preparation and catalytic activities of various transition metal carbide crystallites (VC, MoC, WC) were examined in this study. In particular, the effect of different kinds of transition metal crystallites were scrutinized on the ammonia decomposition reaction. The experimental results showed that BET surface areas ranged from $8.3m^2/g$ to $36.3m^2/g$ and oxygen uptake values varied from $9.1{\mu}mol/g$ to $25.4{\mu}mol/g$. Amongst prepared transition metal carbide crystallites, tungsten compounds (WC) were observed to be most active for ammonia decomposition reaction. The main reason for these results were considered to be related to the extent of electronegativity between these materials. Most of transition metal carbide crystallites were exceeded by Pt/C crystallite. However, the steady state reactivities for some of transition metal carbide crystallites (WC) were comparable to or even higher than that determined for the Pt/C crystallite.

In the brain, glial cells serve in the role to sequester metal from the neural microenvironment and therefore play an important role as a cellular deposition site. The central nervous system is highly vulnerable to oxidative stress, and free iron can stimulate oxidative stress by the Fenton reaction. Aluminum may upregulates the transferrin-independent iron uptake system and stimulate oxidative stress. Nramp2. also known as DMT 1. is a 12-transmembrane(TM) domain protein responsible for dietary iron uptake as well as metal ions such as iron. lead, mangamese. zinc. copper, and cobait. (omitted)
Phenyl styryl ketone ligands 1-5 containing different functional groups were synthesized and attached to the aminated poly (styrene-divinvlbenzene) copolymer through diazotization. The coupling of the ligand with polymer was confirmed by FT-IR. The variation of the uptakes of Pb (II) or Cu (II) ions loaded in the prepared polymers (6-10) was examined at different pH values. An increase of metal uptake in the polymers was observed with the increase in pH value in aqueous solution.
The transfer of cupric sulfate across the rat small intestine in vitro was studied by perfusion method using the segments of everted rat small intestine. Copper transport was approximately propotional to the metal concentration in the mucosal solution and no difference was observed in the metal transport among rat duodenum, jejunum and ileum. It was suggested from these results that copper transport across the rat small intestine would occur by passive diffusion. The effect of various chelating agents on copper transport across the rat small intestine n vitro and its uptake by the intestine were also studied. Copper transport was greatly enhanced in the presence of EDTA and NTA. Copper uptake decreased to a greater extent in the presence of EPTA and NTA.

The biosorption performances of copper were investigated by the immobilized biomass of nonliving marine brown algae Undaria pinnatifida by each of the Ca-alginate method(Ca-ALG), Ba-alginate method(Ba-ALG), polyethylene glycol method(PEG), and carrageenan method (CARR). The copper removal performance increased but the copper uptake decreased as the biomass amount was increased. However, the copper uptake by the immobilized biomass increased with increasing initial copper concentration. Among the immobilization methods, the copper uptake decreased in the following sequence: Ca-ALG > Ba-ALG > PEG > CARR. The pattern of copper uptake by the immobilized biomass fitted the Langmuir isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm. Desorption of deposited copper with 0.05 ~0.5M HCI, resulted in no changes of the copper uptake capacity of the immobilized biomass by the immobilization methods except for PEG, through five subsequent biosorption/desorption cycles. There was no damage to the immobilized biomass which retained its macroscopic appearance in repeated copper uptake/elution cycles.
E. coli was tested for their ability to uptake cadmium intracellularly, and the effect of zinc and calcium on cadmium toxicity to E. coli was observed. In addition, the effect of zinc and calcium on the uptake of cadimium was also studied. This study showed that living E. coli cells took up more cadmium than the dead cells. E. coli in the log phase uptake cadimiumm more actively than E. coli in the stationary phase. These results suggested that there may be metabolic reactions or compounds which encourage the uptake of cadimium. This study also showed that cadimium was sequestered by cell components of which molecular weight is about 30,000. Adding of zinc and calcium chloride reduced cadmium toxicity in E. coli and encouraged intracellular uptake by E coli. However adding of heavy metal solutions helped the microorganisms to adsorb more cadmium. Extremely high or low concentrations of zinc, however, did not affect cell viability.
