  • An axial electron beam gun system, which emits the electron beam power of 50 kW, has been manufactured. The electron beam gun consists of two parts. One is the electron beam generation part. including the filament, cathode, and anode. The maximum beam current is 2 A and the acceleration voltage is 25 kV. The other part includes the focusing-, deflection-, and scanning coils. The beam diameter and ham trajectory can be controlled by these coils. The characteristic of each part is measured ior the optimum condition of evaporation process. Moreover, Helmholtz coil is installed inside the vacuum chamber to adjust the incident angel of the beam to the melting surface for the maximum evaporation. We report on the evaporation rates for zirconium(Zr) and gadolinium(Gd) metals which have the high melting temperatures.

  • Production of fine tantalum powder by calciothermic reduction of tantalum oxides ($Ta_{2}O_5$) pellet through an electronically mediated reaction (EMR) has been investigated. $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed and reductant calcium-nickel (Ca-Ni) alloy were charged into electronically isolated locations in a molten $CaCl_2$ bath. The current flow through an external path between the feed (cathode) and reductant (anode) locations was monitored. The current approximately 4.7A was measured during the reaction in the external circuit connecting cathode and anode location. Tantalum powder with approximately 99 $mass\%$ purity was readily obtained after each experiment. Tantalum powder by EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed was fine compared with that of metal powder by metallothermic reduction and EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ powder feed.

  • Regional cathodic protection has significant impact on pipeline integrity management. After risk analyses of a newly built gas distribution station constructed in an area with large dwelling density, risk score was high because of potential threat caused by galvanic corrosion. Except reinforced steel in concrete, there are four kinds of metal buried under earth: carbon steel, galvanized flat steel, zinc rod and graphite module. To protect buried pipeline from external corrosion, design and construction of regional cathodic protection was proposed. Current density was measured with potential using potential dynamic test and boundary element method (BEM) was used to calculate current requirement and optimize best anode placement during design. From our calculation on the potential, optimized conditions for this area were that an applied current was 3A and anode was placed at 40 meters deep from the soil surface. It results in potential range between $-1.128V_{CSE}$ and $-0.863V_{CSE}$, meeting the $-0.85V_{CSE}$ criterion and the $-1.2V_{CSE}$ criterion that no potential was more negative than $-1.2V_{CSE}$ to cause hydrogen evolution at defects in coating of the pipeline.

  • In order to solve to instability in air and to format dentrite, we used carbonized phenol resin electrode which is amorphous carbon. The structure and properties of deeply Li-doped carbonized phenol resin have been investigated in association with their utilization as electrodes in rechargeable batteries. Resol type phenol resin used as starting material. The doped lithium was found neither in metallic nor in ionic states even in the most deeply doped state($C_{2.2}$Li stage). It has also been confirmed that the carbonized phenol resin electrode has a large capacity with good stability and reversibility. These results strongly suggest that the carbonized phenol resin can make an excellent anode material for secondary batteries. Finally, we discuss that the carbonized phenol resin doped up to the $C_2Li$ stage can exhibit an energy density per volume as high as lithium metal. We know that carbonized phenol resin can used as cathode as well as anode by cyclic voltammogram.

  • SnCo alloy powder prepared by high energy ball milling is examined as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. As the ball-milling time increased, the crystallinity of SnCo decreased. XRD and TEM SADP showed that nanocrystalline and amorphous phase coexisted after 16 h ball-milling. As the crystallinity decreased, the cycleability increased. At first cycle, there are 4 plateau potentials. The observation of voltage plateau at about 0.68 V confirms the formation of Sn-Li alloy and Co metal. It is considered that The plateau potentials below 0.68 V were reaction between Li and Sn. The change of chemical diffusion coefficient showed that the structure of SnCo alloy abruptly changed at first cycle, and maintained after 2nd cycle.

  • In this review article, we are going to explain the recent development of lithium secondary batteries for a cellular phone. There are three kinds of rechargeable batteries for cellular phones such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium ion or lithium ion polymer. The lithium secondary battery is one of the most excellent battery in the point of view of energy density. It means very small and light one among same capacity batteries is the lithium secondary battery. The market volume of lithium secondary batteries increases steeply about 15% annually. The trend of R&D is focused on novel cathode materials including $LiFePO_4$, novel anode materials such as lithium titanate, silicon, and tin, elecrolytes, and safety insurance.

  • We report a simple route for synthesizing multi-dimensional structured silicon anode materials from commercially available bulk silicon powders via metal-assisted chemical etching process. In the first step, silver catalyst was deposited onto the surface of bulk silicon via a galvanic displacement reaction. Next, the silver-decorated silicon particles were chemically etched in a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen peroxide to make multi-dimensional silicon consisting of one-dimensional silicon nanowires and micro-scale silicon cores. As-synthesized silicon particles were coated with a carbon via thermal decomposition of acetylene gas. The carbon-coated multi-dimensional silicon anodes exhibited excellent electrochemical properties, including a high specific capacity (1800 mAh/g), a stable cycling retention (cycling retention of 89% after 20 cycles), and a high rate capability (71% at 3 C rate, compared to 0.1 C rate). This process is a simple and mass-productive (yield of 40-50%), thus opens up an effective route to make a high-performance silicon anode materials for lithiumion batteries.

  • The composites such as Sn-CNTs, $SnSb_{0.5}$-CNTs and $CoSb_3$-CNTs have attracted much attention in the past years owing to their good overall properties. In these samples, intermetallic compounds show high specific capacities. Recently, interest in metal oxides such as $Al_{2}O_{3}$, MgO and $TiO_2$ has been largely stimulated by the realization that they can improve the cycling stability of the Li-ion battery electrodes. The reversible capacity of the $TiO_2$/CNTs composite reaches 168 mAh $g^{-1}$ at the first cycle and remains almost constant during long-term cycling. In this study, a nanocomposite of $TiO_2$/CNTs was prepared by sol-gel method and its electrochemical properties as anode materials for Li-ion batteries were studied by galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammograms (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

  • In the production of zirconium cladding tube, a pickling acid solution is used to remove surface contaminants, which generates tons of pickling acid waste. The waste pickling solution is a valuable resource of Hf-free Zr. Many studies have investigated separating the Hf-free Zr source from the waste pickling acid. The results showed that $Ba_2ZrF_8$ precipitates prepared from the waste pickling acid were useful as an electrolyte for the electrorefining of Zr in molten salt. In the present work, electrorefining was performed in a $Ba_2ZrF_8-LiF$ binary electrolyte to recover Zr from a Hf-free CuZr ingot anode prepared by electroreduction. Before electrorefining, two pretreatments are performed. First, electrolyte melting was carried out to determine the eutectic temperature, and second, the electrolyte was treated to eliminate impurities, mainly hydride. After electrorefining, the cathode deposits were analyzed by $O_2$ gas analyzer and SEM-EDX to explore the possibility of recovering nuclear-grade Zr metal. Moreover, the anode was analyzed by SEM-EDX to determine the Zr dissolution depth.

  • We present, for the first time, a prototype active-matrix field emission display (AMFED) in which an amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (a-Si TFT) and a molybdenum-tip field emitter array (Mo-tip FEA) were monolithically integrated on a glass substrate for a novel active-matrix cathode (AMC) plate. The fabricated AMFED showed good display images with a low-voltage scan and data signals irrespective of a high voltage for field emissions. We introduced a light shield layer of metal into our AMC to reduce the photo leakage and back channel currents of the a-Si TFT. We designed the light shield to act as a focusing grid to focus emitted electron beams from the AMC onto the corresponding anode pixel. The thin film depositions in the a-Si TFTs were performed at a high temperature of above 360°C to guarantee the vacuum packaging of the AMC and anode plates. We also developed a novel wet etching process for $n^+-doped$ a-Si etching with high etch selectivity to intrinsic a-Si and used it in the fabrication of an inverted stagger TFT with a very thin active layer. The developed a-Si TFTs performed well enough to be used as control devices for AMCs. The gate bias of the a-Si TFTs well controlled the field emission currents of the AMC plates. The AMFED with these AMC plates showed low-voltage matrix addressing, good stability and reliability of field emission, and good light emissions from the anode plate with phosphors.
