Direct catalytic decomposition is a promising method for controlling the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the semiconductor and display industries. In this study, a γ-Al2O3 catalyst was developed to reduce N2O emissions by a catalytic decomposition reaction. The γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by an extrusion method using boehmite powder, and a N2O decomposition test was performed using a catalyst reactor that was approximately 25.4 mm (1 in) in diameter packed with approximately 5 mm of catalysts. The N2O decomposition tests were carried out with approximately 1% N2O at 550 to 750 ℃, an ambient pressure, and a GHSV=1800-2000 h-1. To confirm the N2O decomposition properties and the effect of O2 and steam on the N2O decomposition, nitrogen, air, and air and steam were used as atmospheric gases. The catalytic decomposition tests showed that the 1% N2O had almost completely disappeared at 700 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere. However, air and steam decreased the conversion rate drastically. The long term stability test carried out under an N2 atmosphere at 700 ℃ for 350 h showed that the N2O conversion rate remained very stable, confirming no catalytic activity changes. From the results of the N2O decomposition tests and long-term stability test, it is expected that the prepared γ-Al2O3 catalyst can be used to reduce N2O emissions from several industries including the semiconductor, display, and nitric acid manufacturing industry.

The characteristics of $H_2$ gas detection have been investigated using the Pt-MIS capacitor composed of the LPCVD nitride on the oxide. The flat band voltage shift is measured as 0.1 V in 1,000 ppm $H_2$ gas ambient and to be independent of Pt catalyst thickness. It is found that the flatband voltage shift is proportional to the hydrogen concentrations. The response and recovery time of Pt-MIS capacitor are 5 mins and 25 mins respectively. The samples of 30nm thick Pt revealed much higher sensitivity than that of 150nm samples. The samples of 150nm Pt showed that the flatband voltage shift of the device is due to the formation of the dipole layer of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms at the Pt-insulator interface.
Perovskite type ceramic membranes which exhibit dual ion conduction (proton and oxygen ion conduction) can permeate water and can aid solving operational problems such as temperature gradient and carbon deposition associated with a working solid oxide fuel cell. From this point of view, it is crucial to reveal water transport mechanism and especially the nature of the surface sites that is necessary for water incorporation and evolution. $BaCe_{0.8}Y_{0.2}O_{3-{\alpha}}$ (BCY20) was used as a model proton and oxygen ion conducting membrane in this work. Four different catalytically modified membrane configurations were used for the investigations and water flux was measured as a function of temperature. In addition, CO was introduced to the permeate side in order to test the stability of membrane against water and $CO/CO_2$ and post operation analysis of used membranes were carried out. The results revealed that water incorporation occurs on any exposed electrolyte surface. However, the magnitude of water permeation changes depending on which membrane surface is catalytically modified. The platinum increases the water flux on the feed side whilst it decreases the flux on the permeate side. Water flux measurements suggest that platinum can block water permeation on the permeate side by reducing the access to the lattice oxygen in the surface layer.

In order to improve energy efficiency in the dilute trichloroethylene removal using the nonthermal plasma process, the barrier discharge treatment combined with manganese dioxide was experimentally studied. Reaction kinetics in this process was studied on the basis of final byproducts distribution. Decomposition efficiency was improved to about $99\;\%$ at the specific energy of 40 J/L with passing through manganese dioxide. C=C ${\pi}$ bond cleavage of TCE substances gave DCAC, which has the single bond of C-C through oxidation reaction during the barrier discharge plasma treatment. Those DCAC were broken easily in the subsequent catalytic reaction due to the weak bonding energy about $3{\sim}4\;eV$ compared with the double bonding energy in TCE molecules. Oxidation byproducts of DCAC and TCAA from TCE decomposition are generated from the barrier discharge plasma treatment and catalytic surface chemical reaction, respectively. Complete oxidation of TCE into COx is required to about 400 J/L, but $CO_2$ selectivity remains about $60\;\%$.

In recent years, flame synthesis has absorbed a great deal of attention as a combustion method for the production of metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and other related carbon nanostructures, over the existing conventional methods. Flame synthesis is an energy-efficient, scalable, cost-effective, rapid and continuous process, where flame provides the necessary chemical species for the nucleation of carbon structures (feed stock or precursor) and the energy for the production of carbon nanostructures. The production yield can be optimized by altering various parameters such as fuel profile, equivalence ratio, catalyst chemistry and structure, burner configuration and residence time. In the present report, diffusion and premixed flame synthesis methods are reviewed to develop a better understanding of factors affecting the morphology, positioning, purity, uniformity and scalability for the development of carbon nanotubes along with their correlated carbonaceous derivative nanostructures.

TiO2 is a versatile metal oxide material that is frequently used as a photo-catalyst for organic pollutant oxidation and a functional material for ultraviolet-ray protection. To improve its chemical/physical properties and widen the range of industrial application, it is demanded to control the crystalline feature and morphology precisely by applying advanced nano-synthesis methods. In this study, we prepared TiO2 nanoparticles using the water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion method and compared them with the particles synthesized by the conventional precipitation method. Also, we tried to find the optimum conditions for obtaining nano-sized, anatase-rich TiO2 particles by the W/O microemulsion method. We analyzed the crystalline feature and particle size of the prepared samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In summary, we found the W/O microemulsion is more effective than precipitation in obtaining nano-sized TiO2. The best result was derived when the microemulsion was formed using AOT surfactant, hydrolysis was performed under basic condition and the sample was calcined at 200℃.
The partial oxidation of methane with nitrous oxide on silica-supported metal-oxygen cluster compounds, known as heteropoly acids, has been studied. The effects of several variables such as reaction temperature, partial pressure of reactants, residence time, loading of the catalysts, and pretreatment temperature, on the conversion and product distribution were observed. The kinetics also has been studied. The conversion and yield of formaledehyde show maximum values at a loading of 20 wt%. The apparent reaction order of methane conversion is ca. 1.0 with respect to $CH_4$ and ca. 0.4 with respect to $N_2O$. In addition, the apparent activation energy is 30.78 kcal/mole. The addition of small quantities methane whereas water introduced to the reactant decreased the activity of catalyst under present study.

Due to their excellent catalytic activity with respect to methanol oxidation on platinum at low temperature, platinum nanosized catalysts have been a topic of great interest for use in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Since pure platinum is readily poisoned by CO, a by-product of methanol electrooxidation, and is extremely expensive, a number of efforts to design and characterize Pt-based alloy nanosized catalysts or Pt nanophase-support composites have been attempted in order to reduce or relieve the CO poisoning effect. In this review paper, we summarize these efforts based upon our recent research results. The Pt-based nanocatalysts were designed by chemical synthesis and thin-film technology, and were characterized by a variety of analyses. According to bifunctional mechanism, it was concluded that good alloy formation with $2^{nd}$ metal (e.g., Ru) as well as the metallic state and optimum portion of Ru element in the anode catalyst contribute to an enhanced catalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation. In addition, we found that the modified electronic properties of platinum in Pt alloy electrodes as well as the surface and bulk structure of Pt alloys with a proper composition could be attributed to a higher catalytic activity for methanol electooxdation. Proton conducting contribution of nanosized electrocatalysts should also be considered to be excellent in methanol electrooxidation (Spillover effect). Finally, we confirmed the ensemble effect, which combined all above effects, in Pt-based nanocatalsyts especially, such as PtRuRhNi and $PtRuWO_{3}$, contribute to an enhanced catalytic activity.
Constructing and making highly active and stable nanostructured Pt-based catalysts with ultralow Pt loading are still electrifying for electrochemical applications such as water electrolysis and fuel cells. In this study, MoO3 ribbons (RBs) of few micrometer in length is successfully synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. Subsequently, 3-dimentional (3D)-silicate layer for about 10 to 15 nm is introduced via chemical deposition onto the pre-formed MoO3 RBs; to setup the platform for Pt metaldots (MDs) deposition. In comparison with the bare MoO3 RBs, the MoO3-Si has served as a efficient solid-support for stabilizing and accommodating the uniform deposition of sub-2 nm Pt MDs. Such a structural design would effectively assist in improving the electronic conductivity of a fabricated MoO3-Si-Pt catalyst towards MOR; the interfaced, porous and 3D silicate layer has assisted in an efficient mass transport and quenching the poisonous COads species leading to a significant electrocatalytic performance for MOR in alkaline medium. Uniformly decorated, sub-2 nm sized Pt MDs has synergistically oxidized the MeOH in association with the MoO3-Si solid-support hence, synergistic catalytic activity has been achieved. Present facile approach can be extended for fabricating variety of highly efficient Metal Oxide-Metal Nanocomposite for energy harvesting applications.
The technologies for improving the capacity of hydrogen storage were investigated and the recent data of hydrogen storage by using various porous carbon materials were summarized. As the media of hydrogen storage, activated carbon, carbon nanotube, expanded graphite and activated carbon fiber were mainly investigated. The hydrogen storage in the carbon materials increased with controlled pore size about 0.6~0.7 nm. In case of catalyst, transition metal and their metal oxide were mainly applied on the surface of carbon materials by doping. Activated carbon is relatively cheap because of its production on a large scale. Carbon nanotube has a space inside and outside of tube for hydrogen storage. In case of graphite, the distance between layers can be extended by intercalation of alkali metals providing the space for hydrogen adsorption. Activated carbon fiber has the high specific surface area and micro pore volume which are useful for hydrogen storage. Above consideration of research, porous carbon materials still can be one of the promising materials for reaching the DOE target of hydrogen storage.
