  • In order to support wind power development in Jejudo, the island of winds, the wind resource database KIER-WindJeju has been established by meteor-statistical analysis on met-mast measurements of KIER. The analysis includes tower shading, exposure category, wind profile exponent for wind speed extrapolation to hub height of wind turbine, and correlation matrix between neighboring sites to assist choice of appropriate reference site for long-term correlation. KIER-WindJeju will be provided as an add-on of Google $Earth^{TM}$ and will be used as a guideline of future wind resource assessment in Jejudo.

  • The national goal of wind energy dissemination has to be determined rationally based on technically available wind resource potential. For a reliable and scientific estimation or wind resource potential, a wind map is requisite. This paper presents the national wind map of Korea established by numerical wind simulation. Prediction accuracy of the low-resolution wind map is Improved by nudging QuikSCAT data and is validated by comparing with marine buoy beacon and met-mast measurements. Therefore, quantification of national wind resource potential is now possible and is anticipating to be utilized as a core index for policy and strategy building of wind energy dissemination and technology development.

  • The installed capacity of wind turbines in KOREA are growing and enlarging by the central government's support program. Thus, the importance of power performance verification and its uncertainty analysis are recognizing rapidly. This paper described the power testing results of a 3MW wind turbine and analysed an uncertainty level of measurements. The measured power curves are very closely coincide with the calculated one and the annual power production under the given Rayleigh wind speed distribution are estimated with the 3.6~12.7% of uncertainty but, in the dominant wind speed region as 7~8m/s, the uncertainty are stably decreased to 6.3~5.3%.

  • A comparison study between two performance testing results, one is on the site calibration not needed and the other is needed, was proceeded for the understanding on the effect of site calibration on the complex terrain. As a result, it is revealed that all of uncertainty components is effected by the topographical features dramatically. And the maximum difference of uncertainty reached at around 8% of rated capacity of wind turbine. So, the site calibration is an effective method to remove the variable wind effect by the ground complexity and must be proceeded before the power performance testing of a wind turbine.

  • In this study, the effect of sea surface temperature (SST) on the distribution of vertical wind speed in the atmospheric boundary layer of coastal areas was analyzed. In general, coastal areas are known to be more susceptible to various meteorological factors than inland areas due to interannual changes in sea surface temperature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between sea surface temperature (ERA5) and wind resource data based on the meteorological mast of Høvsøre, the test bed area of the onshore wind farm in the coastal area of Denmark. In addition, the possibility of coastal disasters caused by abnormal vertical wind shear due to changes in sea surface temperature was also analyzed. According to the analysis of the correlation between the wind resource data at met mast and the sea surface temperature by ERA5, the wind speed from the sea and the vertical wind shear are stronger than from the inland, and are vulnerable to seasonal sea surface temperature fluctuations. In particular, the abnormal vertical wind shear, in which only the lower wind speed was strengthened and appeared in the form of a nose, mainly appeared in winter when the atmosphere was near-neutral or stable, and all occurred when the wind blows from the sea. This phenomenon usually occurred when there was a sudden change in sea surface temperature within a short period of time.

  • Wind monitoring system is an absolutely-required system for assessing a performance and fatigue load of the wind energy generator in an on-shore wind energy experimental research complex. It was implemented for the purpose of monitoring the wind information measured from a meteorological tower at the monitoring house and of utilizing the measured data for the performance assessment, by using the LabVIEW program. Then, by adding the performance assessment-related data acquired from the wind energy generator during the performance assessment and the data recorder for synchronizing the data of meteorological tower, the system was implemented. Because it transmitted the data by converting the output 'RS-232' of data logger which measures the wind condition into CAN protocol, the data error rate was minimized, This paper is intended to explain the developed wind data monitoring system.

  • There has been a continuous increase in the utilization and utility value of renewable energy such as wind power generation in modem society. Wind condition is the absolute variable to the energy volume in the case of a wind power generation system. For this reason, wind power generators have already been installed in areas where wind velocity is high and the possibility of danger is very low. In other words, instability is likely if the wind velocity in an area is high and where a wind power generation system can be built. On the contrary, low wind velocity is possible in an area with high stability. Therefore, the design and manufacture of a wind power generation system should be carried out in a more complicated topography in order to secure a bigger market. This study examines and suggest how topography affects wind shear by analyzing the measured data in order to predict wind power generation more reliably.

  • The installed capacity of wind turbines in Korea are growing and enlarging by the central government's supporting program. But the majority area having the abundant wind energy resources is composed of mountainous and complex district, thus the turbulence intensity of there is so high and belongs to the turbulence characteristic A category of IEC design requirement. This paper presents the effect of the turbulence intensity on the power performance of a wind turbine system. Particularly, the effect of the power curve of the wind turbine system due to the turbulence intensity has analyzed. As a result, the power curve has a high turbulence characteristic shows the lower value than normal one in high wind speed regime and the AEP will be reduced at the relatively high turbulence area.
