Eighty mandibular first premolars were injected with china ink, decalcified, cleared and used in an in vitro study to determine the number of root canals, the frequency and location of lateral canals, the location of apical foramens, the frequency of apical deltas, and the curvature of root canals. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the teeth demonstrated single canal, but 22.5% of the teeth were found to have bifurcated or trifurcated canals. 2. Of the 99 canals studied, 37.3% of the canals were found to have lateral canals and these ramifications were usually located in the apical third of the root. 3. 27 apical foramens were located directly on the root apex and 66 foramens laterally. 4. 6 canals showed mesial curvature, 49 canals distal curvature, 11 canals buccal curvature, and 25 canals lingual curvature.
Thirty maxillary lateral incisors were injected with china ink, decalcified, cleared and used in an in vitro study to determine the number of root canals, the frequency and location of lateral canals, the location of apical foramens, the frequency of apical deltas, and the curvature of root canals. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the teeth demonstrated single canal, but 6.7% of the teeth were found to have bifurcated canals. 2. Of the 32 canals studied, 37.5% of the canals were found to have lateral canals and these ramifications were usually located in the and apical third of the root. 3. 9 apical foramens were located directly on the root apex and 21 foramens laterally. 4. 3 canals showed mesial curvature, 20 canals distal curvature, 4 canals labial curvature, and 3 canals palatal curvature.
This study was performed to determine the each location of lesions in the maxillary sinus and to evaluate the relationship between the floor of the antrum and the apical regions of teeth by the comparison of the panoramic view and panoramic sinus view. For this study, experimentally with two dry skulls, jelly balls of 8mm and 15mm in diameter containing a short wire for the radiopacity similar to the cyst and clinically 5 patients having mucosal cyst in the antrum and 10 patients having periapical lesion of molar were used. The experimental cystic lesions were simulated with jelly ball being attached in turn to each wall of the antrum. The radiolucent periapical lesions of upper molars were formed by using round bur and the radiopaque periapical lesions were simulated by filling the former lesions with lead foil. Each panoramic view and each panoramic sinus view of the experimental lesions and patients were obtained by using panoramic machine and analyzed. The obtained results were as follows : 1. On the panoramic sinus view, the innominate line was approximately coincided with the most lateral portion of the antrum and the posterior wall appeared as the narrow area at the mesial side of the innominate line. The anterior wall occupied totally the mesial side of the innominate line, and the medial wall occupied the mesial half of the antrum. 2. In all cases of experimental cystic lesion attached to each wall of the antrum, the location of each lesion was able to be determined by applying Tube shift technic. 3. The palatal root and mesiobuccal root of the molar appeared as being transposed each other mesiolaterally on the panoramic and panoramic sinus views. 4. The panoramic sinus view was superior to the panoramic view in revealing the relationship between the floor of the antrum and the periapical lesion.
This study was performed to analyze the effects of forces to the alveolar bone by various molar uprighting spring such as helical uprighting spring. T-loop spring, Modified T-loop spring and open coil spring. The simplified two-dimensional photoelastic model was constructed with a lower left posterior quadrant containing the second molar, the first and second premolars and the canine, with the first molar missing. Several molar uprighting springs were fabricated from 0.017 by 0.022 inch blue Elgiloy and applied to the photoelastic model. Two-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was performed, and the stress distribution was recorded by photography The results obtained were as follows; 1. In all the kinds of the springs, the center of rotation of the mandibular second molar was oserved at the apical 1/5-1/6 between the alveolar crest and the root apex. 2. In all the kinds of the spring, the stress induced in the mesial root surface of the mandibular second molar was relatively homogeneous but there was some difference in the magnitude of the stress. 3. In the kinds of the springs, the distal crown tipping moment of the second molar was increased in turn as open coil spring, helical uprighting spring, T-loop spring, and modified T-loop spring. 4. The largest extrusive force was occured in the T-loop spring, intrusive force was occured in Modified T-loop spring only, and the largest distal tipping force was occured in open coil spring. 5. In the T-loop spring with activation, the stress induced in the mesial root surface of the second molar was increased gradually from the root apex to the alveolar crest and highly concentrated in the alveolar crest.
The aim of this study was to compare the initial apical file (IAF) length between the mesio-buccanl and mesio-lingual canals of the mandibular molar before and after early coronal flaring. Fifty mandibular molars with complete apical formation and patent foramens were selected. After establishing the initial working length of the buccal and lingual canal of the mesial root using the Root-ZX, radiographs were taken for the working length with a 0.5 mm short of #15 K-file tip just visible at the foramen under a surgical microscope (OPMI 1-FC, Carl Zeiss Co. Germany) at 25X. After early coronal flaring using the $K^3$ file, additional radiographs were taken using the same procedure. The root canal morphology and the difference in working length between the buccal and lingual canals were evaluated. These results show that the difference in the length between the mesio-buccal and mesio-lingual canals of the mandibular molar was $\leq$ 0.5 mm. If one canal has a correct working length for the mesial root of the mandibular molar, it can be used effectively for measuring the working length of another canal when the files are superimposed or loosening. In addition, the measured the working length after early coronal flaring is much more reasonable because the difference in the length between the mesio-buccal and mesio-lingual canals can be reduced.
The author observed the eruption pattern of the mandibular premolars. For this study the author took 406 cases of oblique cephalographs of 6 to 12 year old children. The measurement were with regard to the vertical and horizontal dimensional changes and tooth axis changes to the occlusal plane. The following results were obtained. 1. At stage V the tooth axis of 1st premolar inclined mesially to the occlusal plane, as the tooth erupt toward vertically the angulation changed that at stage X the tooth axis almost right angle to the occlusal plane. 2. The distance from the root apex of premolars to the lower border of mandible were slightly increased to the stage VII, while after stage VII rapid increasing appeared. At stage X the distance of 1st premolar was more longer than 2nd premolar. 3. The distance from the mesial surface of 1st molar to the mesial surface of premolars were decreased slightly to the stage VII, but this distances were decreased rapidly after stage VII. 4. The distance between distal surface of 1st premolar and mesial surface of 2nd premolar was almost constant before stage VIII, at stage IX this distance was little presented because the premolars were contacted.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution developed in supporting structures by distal extension removable partial denture with 4-types of direct retainer. The direct retainers examined were Akers clasp, RPI clasp, RPA clasp and RPL clasp in bilateral & unilateral free end case. 3-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was used to record the isochromatic fringe patterns and to calculate the compressive stress at measuring points. The results were as follows. 1. In bilateral free end case, RPI clasp exhibited the similar stress distribution on distal and mesial alveolar crest but Akers clasp exhibited higher stress concentration on distal alveolar crest than mesial alveolar crest. 2. In bilateral free end case, RPA clasp and RPL clasp exhibited the similar stress distribution on distal and mesial alveolar crest and RPL clasp exhibited higher stress concentration on buccal alveolar crest than lingual alveolar crest. 3. Akers clasp produced high stress concentration on residual alveolar ridge distally, but RPI clasp, RPA clasp and RPL clasp produced even stress distribution on residual alveolar ridge. 4. Removable partial denture in unilateral free end case exerted higher stress on abutment tooth root apex than bilateral distal extension removable partial denture.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress patterns developed in supporting structures by removable partial denture with attachment retainers. The attachments tested were Dalbo(miniature) attachment, resilient Ceka attachment, rigid Ceka attachment, precision and sleeve attachment, and R.P.I. clasp as a contrast. 3-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was used to record the isochromatic and isoclinic fringe patterns and to calculate principal stress components at measuring points. The results showed that: 1. The maximum compressive stress on residual ridge was produced under the loading point with Dalbo and resilient Ceka attachment, distal to the loading point with rigid Ceka and precision and sleeve attachment, and mesial to the loading point with R.P.I. clasp. 2. The Dalbo attachment produced the most stress on residual ridge, and the least stress on abutment teeth. and resilient Ceka attachment showed favorable stress distribution. 3. Rigid Ceka attachment produced higher compressive stress on buccal. alveolar crest, and precision and sleeve attachment produced higher compressive stress on distal alvelolar crest and mesial surface of the root apex in abutment teeth. 4. R.P.I. clasp produced higher compressive stress on mesial alveolar crest.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical pressure generated by 2 endodontic irrigation needles and the GentleWave system in mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: The mesial and distal root canals of 12 mandibular molars were irrigated with a 30-gauge close-end needle or with a 30-gauge open-end needle. Procedures were performed in the mesial and distal canals. The GentleWave procedure and irrigation at 1 mm from the apex in the distal roots using an open-end needle were used, respectively, as negative and positive controls. The apical pressure was measured using a data acquisition pressure setup. Apical pressure exerted by the different needles in the 2 different canal types was statistically compared using 2-way analysis of variance. Results: Significant differences were found in the apical pressure for both needles and the canal type. The lowest values were obtained with close-end needles and in mesial canals. Negative apical pressure values were obtained using GentleWave. Conclusions: The needle and the canal type influenced the apical pressure. The GentleWave procedure produced negative apical pressure.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate root resorption and alveolar bone resorption pattern by jiggling movement. 16 adult cats were divided into 4 groups(6, 12, 18, 24 days). In test side, mesio-distal jiggling force was applied in right maxillary 1st premolar in 3 days cycle In control side, mesial force was applied in left maxillary 1st premolar. Radiographic and histologic observation were performed in 6, 12, 18, 24 days after force application. The results were as follow: 1. Alveolar bone resorption was more severe by jiggling force than by unidirectional force. 2. Root resorption pattern was not different between jiggling force and unidirectional force. 3. Combined pattern of bone resorption and new bone formation appeared in jiggling group. 4. New bone formation began to appear at periapical area of jiggling group after 24 days, because alveolar bone resorption was severe and extrusion resulted.
