  • The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between insecure adult attachment and emotion dysregulation. A total of 468 data were collected by requesting a survey to an online research company. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 25.0. The Sobel test was conducted to verify the mediating effect of mentalization. The research results are as follows. First, there was a significant correlation between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, mentalization, and emotion dysregulation. Second, the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between attachment anxiety and emotion dysregulation was found to be significant, and a partial mediating effect was found. Third, the mediating effect of mentalization in the relationship between attachment avoidance and emotion dysregulation was found to be significant and a partial mediating effect was found. Through the results of this study, the relationship between insecure adult attachment and emotion dysregulation was confirmed, and the role of mentalization in the relationship between them was also confirmed.

  • The present study was aimed to verify the mediating effect of mentalization and mindfulness in the relationship between secure attachment and borderline personality traits. To this purpose, a self-reporting survey were conducted to universities and general companies in Seoul and Gyeonggi, so the final 358 data were used for analysis. Questionnaires including attachment type, mentalization, mindfulness and borderline personality traits were administered. A data was analyzed by a descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and a structural equation model using SPSS and AMOS statistic program. A summary of the research results are as follows. First, in the results of the correlation analysis on the primary factors, secure attachment, mentalization, mindfulness and borderline personality traits had a significant correlation. Second, a dual mediation effect of mentalization and mindfulness was shown in the relationship between attachment and borderline personality traits. An secure attachment effect on the borderline personality traits through mentalization and mindfulness. Lastly, the significance and limitations of this study was discussed, as well as proposals for future research.

  • This study aimed to analyze the mediating effect of conflict resolution strategies of college students on subjective well-being through adaptation to college life and to verify the moderating effect by mentalization. The study subjects were 248 college students. As a result of the study, first, the positive conflict resolution strategy, compromise and cooperation strategy, had a significant direct effect on subjective well-being, and a mediating effect through adaptation to university life. Second, concession, avoidance, and domination strategies showed significant mediated moderating effects of mentalization through adaptation to college life. Third, the moderating effect of mentalization was significant in the direct effect of concession and avoidance strategies on subjective well-being. Through these results, there was verification on the importance of a positive conflict resolution strategy, and a discussion on the harmful effects of concession, avoidance, and domination strategies by the level of mentalization on college students' adaptation and subjective well-being.

  • Objectives: Adolescence involves a number of developmental processes, as well as unique psychological characteristics and behaviors. An increased rate of internet and game addictions, school violence, and suicide may either represent aspects of adolescence or a psychopathological phenomenon. There is an urgent need to develop software programs that can prevent and resolve adolescent behavioral problems. We applied the mentalization theory to interpret and find solutions for problems faced by adolescent characters in literature. Methods: In Joan Rowling's novel "Casual Vacancy," Sukhvinder is a girl with problems representative of those encountered by modern adolescents; she is a victim of bullying and engages in self-mutilation. We targeted her problematic behaviors as representative of a prementalized state. Results: Born into an upper-class English family with Pakistani origins, Sukhvinder, unlike her siblings, fails her parents' expectations. Whenever she faces a psychological crisis, she regresses into the teleological mode (the most primitive pre-mentalization stage) and regains her sense of self by cutting herself. After her friend's suicide, however, she begins to communicate with her parents and moves toward mentalization. Conclusion: By analyzing Sukhvinder's behavior, we assessed patterns of attachment, empathy, and mentalization, and identified corrective approaches for problematic behaviors. We believe that the presented interpretation may serve as a foundation for the development of models for understanding adolescent deviant behaviors.

  • Objectives : We developed the short form of the Mentalization Improvement Program for Adolescent-Community Model (MIPAdo-CM-S), based on the concept of the mentalization. Methods : The MIPAdo-CM was composed of 6 sessions and was applied to 133 students in the 1st grade of a middle school for six weeks during their regular school hours. After 6 weeks, we compared the endpoint changes of Adolescent Mental Problem Questionnaire-Revised (AMPQ-R), Emotional Empathy Test, Peer Aggression Scale, Peer Bullying Scale, School Adjustment Scale, Test Anxiety Inventory and Visual Analogue Scale between the subject and the control group. Results : On the Visual Analoge Scale, students in the trial classes reported an increased understanding and respect for others, as well as themselves. Conclusion : The efficacy of MIPAdo-CM was subjective improvement of understanding and respect for both others and themselves. To prove objective usefulness of this program, further studies should be administered in the form of long-term, regular and structured courses.

  • Objectives : Understanding the emotions, thoughts, feelings and behaviors of others, as well as oneself, is part of the mentalizing function. We developed a new school-based community model for mental health, called the Mentalization Improvement Program for Adolescent-Community Model (MIPAdo-CM), based on the concept of mentalization. Methods : The MIPAdo-CM was composed of 12 sessions and was applied to 403 students in the 2nd grade of a middle school. Every session was conducted after the regular school hours for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, we compared the endpoint changes of Adolescent Mental Problem Questionnaire-Revised (AMPQ-R), Emotional Empathy Test (EET), Peer Aggression Scale (PAS), Peer Bullying Scale (PBS), School Adjustment Scale (SAS), Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) and Visual Analogue Scale between the subject and the control group. Results : There was no significant difference between two groups in AMPQ-R, EET, PAS, PBS, SAS, and TAI. On the Visual Analoge Scale, however, students in the trial classes reported more increase in understanding and respect for both others and themselves. Conclusion : The efficacy of MIPAdo-CM was subjective improvement of understanding and respect for both others and themselves, erence between two groups in AMPQ-R, Empathy test, To prove objective usefulness of this program, further studies with more structured design will be needed.

  • In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.
