  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to understand the correlations between life stress, sleep quality, and mental health in nursing college students. Method : This study was conducted on 315 nursing college students in B City between April 1stand30th, 2017. The collected data were processed using SPSS 22.0 and were analyzed using means, standard deviations, t-tests, an ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results : Nursing college students showed means of $2.36{\pm}0.54$ points in life stress, $1.03{\pm}0.41$ points in sleep quality, and $2.95{\pm}0.57$ points in mental health. The analysis of correlations between life stress, sleep quality, and mental health in nursing college students showed a statistically significant positive correlation between life stress and sleep quality (r = .432, p < .001). In addition, statistically significant negative correlations were found between life stress and mental health (r = -.589, p < .001) as well as between mental health and sleep quality (r = -.301, p < .001). Discussion : Replication studies with larger numbers of subjects are required. Based on the present study, systematic studies on factors affecting life stress, sleep quality, and mental health are also necessary. Moreover, programs should be developed to reduce life stress as well as improve sleep quality and mental health.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of acupuncture for reducing mental stress using power spectrum analysis of the heart rate variability. Methods : 5 healthy volunteers participated in this study. After instrumentation and 5-minute rest period, mental stress was provided for 5-minute. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress. Acupuncture was put on the HT8, and needle was removed after 15min. Than 2nd mental stress was given for 5-minute with same method. For the control, same process was repeated to same subject except for acupuncture. Results : After mental stress, LF and LF/HF ratio is significantly increased. After acupuncture treatment, LF/HF ratio is significantly decreased, and LF do not significantly changed despite of mental stress. Conclusions : The result suggest that acupuncture treatment can regulate and prevent the alteration of autonomic nerve system due to mental stress.

  • Stress mindset is a perspective on stress that can change stress management and performance in stressful situations. In relation to stress mindset aspects, this study verified the impact of academic stress, future anxiety, and positive mental health as a way to improve the mental health of students with a positive stress mindset through an online social networking platform. Additionally, the effectiveness of resilience was demonstrated as a way to increase the effectiveness of stress mindset. In order to verify hypotheses, this study conducted a survey from 104 university students in Korea. The results indicated that stress mindset was directly related to academic stress. In addition, resilience had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between stress mindset and academic stress. However, since the effect was not found for future anxiety and positive mental health, the need to establish a new strategy was raised. The research has implications in suggesting ways for students to have a positive stress mindset and increase its effectiveness.

  • This study is intended to identify relationship between stress, self-esteem and mental health in nursing students. The data were collected from 448 nursing students using self-report questionnaire. The data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS 19.0 program. The result are as followed; First, the average of stress, self-esteem, and mental health was $1.25{\pm}0.55$, $3.33{\pm}0.42$, and $2.79{\pm}1.20$ point. Second, mental health was correlated with stress positively and self-esteem negatively. Third, the influencing factor in mental health of the participant were interpersonal relationship and clinical based stress, $R^2=.561$. Thus, development of guidance program to improve mental health of nursing students is recommended.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to show the differences of mental stress measured with heart rate variability (HRV) and to evaluate the effects of Aromatherapy under mental stress, according to the depression index. Methods : The volunteers were allocated into 2 groups by BDI scores. Each group is divided into 2 subgroups again. After instrumentation and 10-minutes rest period, mental stress by operation was provided for 15-minutes. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress. Then the control groups rested for 15-minutes. The experimental groups were treated with Aromatherapy. And then HRV was recorded. Results : 1. There were no significant differences in the mean HRT and SDNN between each group. 2. LF, HF, and LF norm showed different changes in each group. 3. LF/HF ratio showed significant changes. Conclusions : These results suggest that psychic factor makes an important rule under the mental stress and the effect of Aromatherapy, and Aromatherapy is effective to recover mental stress.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the effect auricular acupuncture for acute mental stress using power spectrum analysis of the heart rate variability(HRV). Methods : 10 healthy volunteers participated in this study. After 5 minute rest, the first mental stress was provided for 5 minute. And then subjects rested for 15 minute. The second mental stress was provided for 5 minute. The acupoint, Shin-Mun point of the ear was stimulated for 15 minute. HRV was recorded before and after the first and second mental stress, and after auricular acupuncture stimulation. Results : After mental stress, normalized LF and LF/HF ratio is significantly increased. Before and after simple rest, normalized LF and normalized HF is significantly changed, but LF and LF/HF ratio is not significantly changed. On the other hand, before and after auricular acupuncture treatment, normalized LF, normalized HF is significantly changed, and also LF and LF/HF ratio is significantly decreased. Conclusion : The result suggest that auricular acupuncture can decrease more significantly in cardiac sympathetic activity due to mental stress than simple rest.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep quality and mental health among adolescents and identify the factors relating to mental health. Methods: The subjects consisted of 285 middle school students. The data were collected from May $2^{nd}$ to $27^{th}$, 2016. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression with SPSS ver. 21. Results: The mean score for quality of sleep in adolescents was $4.20{\pm}2.64$, and the mean score for mental health was $13.67{\pm}12.93$. Poor sleepers showed higher scores for mental health than good sleepers. Mental health was found to have a positive correlation with both stress and quality of sleep. Stress and sleep quality were found to be significant factors influencing mental health and explained 59% of the variance in mental health. Conclusion: These findings indicate that effective intervention programs enhancing sleep quality should be provided for adolescents in order to prevent poor mental health.
