  • Purpose: This study was designed to construct a structural model for explaining mental health status in middle - aged women. Methods: The data was collected by self - reported questionnaires from 206 middle - aged women in Seoul. Data analysis was done with the SAS pc program for descriptive statistics and a PC - LISREL Program for finding the best fit model which assumes causal relationships among variables. Results: The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good, but paths and variables of the model were modified by considering theoretical implications and statistical significances of parameter estimates. Thus it was modified by excluding 3 paths, The modified model showed was good fit to the data($x^2=177.55$, p=.00), GFI=0.908, AGFI=0.860, RMR=0.013, NFI=0.972, NNFI=0.982). Perceived stress, anger expression method, and self -esteem were found to have direct effects on mental health status in middle - aged women. These predictive variables of mental health status explained $66.6\%$ of the model. Conclusion: Programs to enhance mental health status in middle - aged women should include stress management skill, anger expression skill, and self -esteem enhancement skills to be effective.

Methods: The research data utilized raw data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2020), Second Round. A total of 3,713 participants were included in the final analysis. Data analysis was performed using the statistical software SPSS version 26.0. Results: The relationship between the study participants and mental health revealed that compared to those with a spouse, individuals who were divorced or separated had an odds ratio (OR) of 2.598 for 'depression' and an OR of 2.142 for 'suicidal thoughts'. In the case of 'stress perception', individuals who were divorced or separated had an OR of 3.434. In terms of gender, females had an OR of 4.867 for 'depression', an OR of 2.510 for 'suicidal thoughts', and an OR of 1.847 for 'stress perception', compared to males. Regarding age, the odds of 'depression' were 1.801 times higher in the 60 to 79 age group compared to the 18 to 39 age group. For smoking status, smokers had an OR of 2.812 for 'depression' compared to non-smokers. The OR for 'suicidal thoughts' was 3.047, and the OR for 'stress perception' was 1.463. However, the relationship between mental health and binge drinking frequency and quantity of alcohol consumed in a single session was not significant. Conclusion: The divorced, separated, or bereaved groups may be vulnerable to 'depression,' 'suicidal ideation,' and 'stress.' Therefore, there is an expectation to explore strategies for the development and enhancement of community-based mental counseling and health education support programs, aiming to improve the mental well-being and quality of life of individuals and the local community.

  • This study recognizes the seriousness of mental health damage in the aged these days including stress, depression, suicidal ideation and intends to verify structural relationship between mental health and those expected to affect it such as health behavior, quality of life, and subjective consciousness of health. According to the results of this study, first, as the aged's quality of life is higher, it has more effect to reduce stress, depression, or suicidal ideation. Also, quality of life enhances subjective consciousness of health and improves mental health. Second, although health behavior measured by smoking, problematic drinking, obesity, or moderate exercise and sleep did not show direct effect on mental health, it has indirect effect on it with subjective consciousness of health as mediation. Based on the result of this study, in order to improve the aged's mental health, it is needed to consider the enhancement of their life quality in advance and make systematic efforts to change their health behavior.

  • This exploratory research examines a new approach to the healing environment in the changed health paradigm, and seeks to conceptualize the extended characteristics of the healing environment in the context of mental health promotion. This study aims to, first, define the concepts of health, mental health, and the healing environment in the changed paradigm, and second, develop the healing characteristics of the physical environment for mental health promotion and create indicators. For these purposes, this study performed a theoretical exploration that could support the concept of the healing environment for mental health promotion by expanding its scope into not only architecture, psychology, and psychiatry but also philosophy of architecture and environment psychology, which concerns the relationship between humans and the environment. This study considers related theories and attempts to establish a new concept from a convergent perspective. The characteristics of the healing environment categorized as a result of exploratory research on previous studies and theories include (a) physical protection promotion, (b) psychological comfort promotion, (c) social exchange promotion, and (d) personal self-esteem promotion. Establishing the concept of the healing environment for mental health promotion is important to implement the actual healing environment. Based on the concept, more specific design indicators and guidelines could be developed to conduct applied research.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast health promoting behaviors, mental health, and quality of life between shift nurses and non-shift nurses and to evaluate factors influencing their quality of life. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 113 non-shift nurses and 265 shift nurses who had been working at one of five hospitals in Incheon for more than one year. Descriptive statistics, ANCOVA, logistic regression, and multiple regression were used in performance of data analysis. Results: For shift nurses' mean total scores for health promoting behaviors and quality of life were significantly lower than those for non-shift nurses'(p<.05). Result of logistic regression analyses indicated that marital status (OR=2.092, 95%CI=1.174-3.729) and quality of life (OR=3.397, 95%CI=1.694-6.812) were significant between shift nurses and non-shift nurses. Non-shift work, low stress, provision of health-welfare programs, high score for health promoting behavior, and good mental health status showed an association with better quality of life (explained 48.3% of variance). Conclusion: Educational, policy, and regulatory approaches are required in order to improve mental health and quality of life for nurses, which may be influenced by their unhealthy behaviors such as irregular dietary patterns, while provision of counseling programs may be helpful to enhancement of nurses' mental health.
