The prediction of the exact behavior of multistory building is one of the most complicated problem encountered in structural engineering practice. An efficient computer method for the three dimensional analysis of building structures is presented in this paper. A multistory building is idealized as an assemblage of a series of rectangular plane frames interconnected by rigid floor diaphragms. The matrix condensation technique is employed for the reduction of degrees of freedom, which results in a significant saving in computational efforts and the required memory size. Kinematical approach was used to assemble condensed stiffness matrices of plane frames into a three dimensional stick model stiffness matrix. The static analysis follows the modified tridiagonal approach. Since this procedure utilizes the condensed stiffness matrix of the structure, the dynamic equations of motion for the story displacement are developed by assigning proper mass for each story. Analysis results of several example structures are compared to those obtained by using the well-known SAP IV for verification of the accuracy and efficiency of the computer program PFS which was developed utilizing the method proposed in this study. The analysis method proposed in this study can be used as an efficient and economical means for the analysis of multistory buildings.

In this paper, we propose an efficient disk buffer replacement policy which improves hit ratio and reduces writing operations of flash based storages. The flash based storage has many advantages, including a small form factor, non-volatility and high reliability, but there are problems caused by own limitations, like not-in-place update, short life cycle and asymmetric I/O latencies. To redeem these problems, this paper proposes the write weighted probability of reference(2WPR) policy. 2WPR policy predicts re-referencing probability and calculates localities of each page. Furthermore, by weighting write operations to every pages, 2WPR can reduce write operations to flash based storage. In addition, we can improve the performance with higher hit ratio and reduce the number of write operations and consequently shorten the latencies of each operation. The results show that our policy provides improvements of up to 10% for the hit ratio with the reduction of up to 5% for the flash writing operation compared with other policies.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are present in essentially all natural and synthetic materials from petrol to flowers. In this study, indoor and outdoor VOCs concentrations of houses, offices and internet-cafes were measured and compared simultaneously with personal exposures of each 50 participants in Asan and Seoul, respectively. Also, factors that influence personal VOCs exposure were statistically analyzed using questionnaires in relation to house characteristics, time activities, and health effects. All VOCs concentrations were measured by OVM passive samplers (3M) and analyzed with GC/MS. Target pollutants among VOCs were Toluene, o-Xylene, m/p-Xylene, Ethylbenzene, MIBK, n-Octane, Styrene, Trichloroethylene, and 1,2-Dichlorobenzene. Indoor and outdoor VOCs concentrations measured in Seoul were significantly higher than those in Asan except Ethylbenzene. Residential indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios for all target compounds ranged from 0.94 to 1.51 and I/O ratios of Asan were a little higher than those of Seoul. Relationship between personal VOCs exposure, and indoor and outdoor VOCs concentrations suggested that time-activity pattern could affect the high exposure to air pollutant. Factors that influence indoor VOCs level and personal exposure with regard to house characteristics in houses were building age, inside smoking and house type. In addition insecticide and cosmetics interestingly affected the VOCs personal exposure. Higher exposure to VOCs might be caused to be exciting increase and memory reduction, considering the relationship between measured VOCs concentrations and questionnaire (p<0.05).

Recently, wireless body area network (WBAN) has received much attention as an application for the ubiquitous healthcare system. In WBAN, each sensor nodes and a personal base station such as PDA have an energy constraint and computation overhead should be minimized due to node's limited computing power and memory constraint. The reliable data transmission also must be guaranteed because it handles vital signals. In this paper, we propose a systematic network coding scheme for WBAN to reduce the network coding overhead as well as total energy consumption for completion the transmission. We model the proposed scheme using Markov chain. To minimize the total energy consumption for completing the data transmission, we made the problem as a minimization problem and find an optimal solution. Our simulation result shows that large amount of energy reduction is achieved by proposed systematic network coding. Also, the proposed scheme reduces the computational overhead of network coding imposed on each node by simplify the decoding process.

Scalable displays generate large and high resolution images and provide an immersive environment. Recently, scalable displays are built on the networked clusters of PCs, each of which has a fast graphics accelerator, memory, CPU, and storage. However, the distributed rendering on clusters is a network bound work because of limited network bandwidth. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for reducing the network bandwidth and implement it with a conventional distributed rendering system. This paper describes the algorithm called geometry tracking that avoids the redundant geometry transmission by indexing geometry data. The experimental results show that our algorithm reduces the network bandwidth up to 42%.

Today's portable electric consumer devices, which are operated by battery, tend to integrate more multimedia processing capabilities. In the multimedia processing devices, multimedia system-on-chips can handle specific algorithms which need intensive processing capabilities and significant power consumption. As a result, the power-efficiency of multimedia processing devices becomes important increasingly. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable data caching architecture, in which data allocation is constrained by software support, and evaluate its performance and power efficiency. Comparing with conventional cache architectures, power consumption can be reduced significantly, while miss rate of the proposed architecture is very similar to that of the conventional caches. The reduction of power consumption for the reconfigurable data cache architecture shows 33.2%, 53.3%, and 70.4%, when compared with direct-mapped, 2-way, and 4-way caches respectively.

Radiation therapy, the most commonly used for the treatment of brain tumors, has been shown to be of major significance in tumor control and survival rate of brain tumor patients. About 200,000 patients with brain tumor are treated with either partial large field or whole brain radiation every year in the United States. The use of radiation therapy for treatment of brain tumors, however, may lead to devastating functional deficits in brain several months to years after treatment. In particular, whole brain radiation therapy results in a significant reduction in learning and memory in brain tumor patients as long-term consequences of treatment. Although a number of in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the pathogenesis of radiation-mediated brain injury, the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which radiation induces damage to normal tissue in brain remain largely unknown. Therefore, this review focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of whole brain radiation-induced cognitive impairment and the identification of novel therapeutic targets. Specifically, we review the current knowledge about the effects of whole brain radiation on pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory pathways, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)/tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) system and extracellular matrix (ECM), and physiological angiogenesis in brain. These studies may provide a foundation for defining a new cellular and molecular basis related to the etiology of cognitive impairment that occurs among patients in response to whole brain radiation therapy. It may also lead to new opportunities for therapeutic interventions for brain tumor patients who are undergoing whole brain radiation therapy.

Telmisartan is an angiotensin-II receptor blocker and acts as a selective modulator of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). Several studies have demonstrated that telmisartan ameliorates depression and memory dysfunction and reduces brain inflammation. We hypothesized that the beneficial effects of telmisartan on brain could be due to modulation of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Here, we examined the effect of telmisartan on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) which plays an important role in leukocyte transcytosis through the BBB. Telmisartan blocked TNF-α-induced ICAM-1 expression and leukocyte adhesion in U87MG human glioma cells but showed no effect on human brain microvascular endothelial cells. In U87MG cells, a PPAR antagonist, GW9662 did not block the effect of telmisartan on ICAM1 expression but rather potentiated. Moreover, GW9662 caused no change in TNF-α-induced ICAM-1 expression, suggesting no implication of PPARγ in the telmisartan effect. Further studies showed that telmisartan blocked TNF-α-induced activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), p38, and nuclear factorkappa B (NF-κB). In contrast, inhibitors of JNK, ERK1/2 and NF-κB but not p38, blocked ICAM-1 expression induced by TNF-α. Thus, our findings suggest that the beneficial effect of telmisartan is likely due to the reduction of astrocytic ICAM1 expression and leukocytes adhesion to astrocytes, and that this response was mediated by the inhibition of JNK/ERK1/2/NF-κB activation and in the PPAR-independent manner. In conclusion, this study enhances our understanding of the mechanism by which telmisartan exerts the beneficial brain function.
Objective Classification of herbal formulas through the analysis of compositional herb's is a suitable method in the aspects of the effective applications of herbal formulas. However, these classification methods have some problems in dealing with lots of herbal formulas because the estimations of herbal formula's effects are dependent upon one's memory. In this study, we aimed to establish the effective methodology to elicit the classified herbal formula's chart by introducing the DB systems without interfering with non-standard terms. Method : We entered the herbs informations of the composition of herbal formulas into database, made an alias tables of corresponding herbs, and achieved standardization of herb's informations. Using these databases, we made the classified herbal formula's chart according to the presence and the treatment informations of herbs. Results By analyzing the herbal formula into the set of compositional herbal elements, we could systemically express the parents and children herbal formula at once according to search terms. We provided the advanced searching tools entering the name of herbal formula and compositional herb together. Through these searching methods, it is facilitated to grasp the classified herbal formula's chart according to the addition and reduction of compositional herbs in Dong-uibogam(東醫寶鑑) and Bangjehak(方劑學)
Objectives: The present mini review aimed to summarize the existing knowledge regarding the beneficial and adverse effects of raloxifene in menopausal women. Methods: This study is a review of relevant publications about the effects of raloxifene on sleep disorder, depression, venous thromboembolism, the plasma concentration of lipoprotein, breast cancer, and cognitive function among menopausal women. Results: Raloxifene showed no significant effect on depression and sleep disorder. Verbal memory improved with administration of 60 mg/day of raloxifene while a mild cognitive impairment risk reduction by 33% was observed with administration of 120 mg/day of raloxifene. Raloxifene was associated with a 50% decrease in the need for prolapse surgery. The result of a meta-analysis showed a significant decline in the plasma concentration of lipoprotein in the raloxifene group compared to placebo (standardized mean difference, -0.43; 10 trials). A network meta-analysis showed that raloxifene significantly decreased the risk of breast cancer (relative risk, 0.572; 95% confidence interval, 0.327-0.881; P = 0.01). In terms of adverse effects of raloxifene, the odds ratio (OR) was observed to be 1.54 (P = 0.006), indicating 54% increase in the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) while the OR for pulmonary embolism (PE) was 1.05, suggesting a 91% increase in the risk of PE alone (P = 0.03). Conclusions: Raloxifene had no significant effect on depression and sleep disorder but decreased the concentration of lipoprotein. Raloxifene administration was associated with an increased risk of DVT and PE and a decreased risk of breast cancer and pelvic organ prolapse in postmenopausal women.
