Electrochemical Characteristics of Ferredoxin Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au Substrate for Molecular-Memory Application

  • Self-assembled monolayers of spinach ferredoxin immobilized to Au substrate were investigated. Ferredoxin was immobilized onto the chemically modified Au surface. Au surface were modified to $NH^{3+}$ by the 4-aminothiphenol and then modified by N-succinimidyl-3-[2-pyridyldithio]propionate for the ferredoxin immobilization. To verify the electrochemical activity of immobilized ferredoxin molecules, cyclic-voltammetry was measured. Finally, to verify the memory application, reduction potential was applied to ferredoxin molecules as for the write function, and then current transients observed from the reduced ferredoxin layers were measured for the read function of memory applications.

Dynamic analysis of a historical monument: retrofit using shape memory alloy wires

  • The effectiveness of using the advanced seismic protection technology based on shape memory alloy (SMA) dampers to preserve a historical minaret is investigated. The proposed studied case, the minaret of Mansourah, is a seven century old minaret located in Tlemcen, Algeria. Its original height was of 47m, while nowadays, the monument is half destructed and its current height reaches the 40m. The proposed seismic retrofit is based on the technique that utilizes SMA wires as dampers for the upper flexible part of the minaret. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is numerically evaluated via non-linear finite element analysis using the structural software ANSYS. The effectiveness of the proposed device in mitigating the seismic hazard is demonstrated by the effective reduction in its dynamic response.

An Experimental 0.8 V 256-kbit SRAM Macro with Boosted Cell Array Scheme

  • This work presents a low-voltage static random access memory (SRAM) technique based on a dual-boosted cell array. For each read/write cycle, the wordline and cell power node of selected SRAM cells are boosted into two different voltage levels. This technique enhances the read static noise margin to a sufficient level without an increase in cell size. It also improves the SRAM circuit speed due to an increase in the cell read-out current. A 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS 256-kbit SRAM macro is fabricated with the proposed technique, which demonstrates 0.8 V operation with 50 MHz while consuming 65 ${\mu}W$/MHz. It also demonstrates an 87% bit error rate reduction while operating with a 43% higher clock frequency compared with that of conventional SRAM.

  • Recently, the fuzzy theory has been adopted broadly to the applications of image processing. Especially the fuzzy clustering algorithm is adopted to image segmentation to reduce the ambiguity and the influence of noise in an image.But this needs lots of memory and execution time because of the great deal of image data. Therefore a new image segmentation algorithm is needed which reduces the memory and execution time, doesn't change the characteristices of the image, and simultaneously has the same result of image segmentation as the conventional fuzzy clustering algorithm. In this paper, for image segmentation, an extended fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed which uses the occurence of data of the same characteristic value as the weight of the characteristic value instead of using the characteristic value directly in an image and it is proved the memory reduction and execution time reducted in comparision with the conventional fuzzy clustering algorithm in image segmentation.

  • In order to solve the problem of uncovered background region due to the region-due to the region-based motion estimation, this paper presents a new method which generates the uncovered region memory using motion estimation and shows the application of the algorithm for very low bit rate video coding. The proposed algorithm can be briefly described as follows it detects the changed region by using the information of FD(frame difference) and segmentation, and then as for only that region the backward motion estimation without transmission of shape information is done. Therefore, from only motion information the uncovered background region memory is generated and updated. The contents stored in the uncovered background region memory are referred whenever the uncovered region comes into existence. The regions with large prediction error are transformed and coded by using DCT. As results of simulation, the proposed algorithm shows the superior improvement in the subjective and objective image quality due to the remarkable reduction of transmission bits for prediction error.

  • 형상기억합금 선(Shape Memory Alloy Fibers : SMA Fibers)을 삽입한 복합재료 평판의 고온 환경에서의 열적 좌굴 및 진동 해석을 유한요소법을 이용하여 수행하였다 1 차 전단변형이론을 적용하여 적층판을 모델링하였고, 온도 변화 효과는 적층판의 전 영역에서 균일한 온도 분포로 가정하였다. 형상기억합금 선의 온도에 대한 비선형 재료 성질을 고려하여 열적 좌굴 해석 수행 시 반복 계산법을 이용하였고, 자유 진동 해석에서는 시스템의 자유도를 줄이기 위하여 Guyan-Reduction(CR)을 사용하였다. 온도 변화와 형상기억합금 선의 체적비(volume fraction) 및 초기 변형률(initial strain) 변화에 따른 임계 온도와 고유 진동수의 특성을 해석하였다.

  • The RGO with controllable oxygen functional groups is a novel material as the active layer of resistive switching memory through a reduction process. We designed a nanoscale conductive channel induced by local oxygen ion diffusion in an Au / RGO+GQD / Al resistive switching memory structure. A strong electric field was locally generated around the Al metal channel generated in BIL, and the local formation of a direct conductive low-dimensional channel in the complex RGO graphene quantum dot region was confirmed. The resistive memory design of the complex RGO graphene quantum dot structure can be applied as an effective structure for charge transport, and it has been shown that the resistive switching mechanism based on the movement of oxygen and metal ions is a fundamental alternative to understanding and application of next-generation intelligent semiconductor systems.

  • A variety of power reduction technologies is introduced and the benefits of the technologies are discussed. PenTile$^{(R)}$ DBLC (Dynamic Brightness LED Control) combined with SABC (Sensor-Based Adaptive Brightness Control) enables to achieve the average LED power consumption to one third. The panel power reduction of 25% can be achieved with low power driving technology, ALS (Active Level Shifter). MIP (Memory In Pixel) is expected to be useful in transflective display because the whole display area can be utilized in reflective mode with power consumption of 1mW.

A Study of Integral Image Hardware Design for Memory Size Efficiency (메모리 크기에 효율적인 적분영상 하드웨어 설계 연구)

  • The integral image is the sum of input image pixel values. It is mainly used to speed up processing of a box filter operation, such as Haar-like features. However, large memory for integral image data can be an obstacle on an embedded hardware environment with limited memory resources. Therefore, an efficient method to store the integral image is necessary. In this paper, we propose a memory size reduction hardware design for integral image. The hardware design is used two methods. It is the new integral image memory and modulo calculation for reducing integral image data. The new integral image memory has additional calculation overhead, but it is not obstacle in hardware environment that parallel processing is possible. In the Xilinx Virtex5-LX330T targeted experimental result, integral image memory can be reduced by 50% on a $640{\times}480$ 8-bit gray-scale input image.

  • Embedded system is widely used in various applications from simple monitor to a set-top box with CPU, memory and hard disk drives. Specially, embedded OS is ported in moveable or small machinery since it ordinarily transmits multimedia data. In this paper, we propose Null copy scheme on the embedded linux system for multimedia service, which can reduce memory copy overhead from user address space to kernel one, and vice versa. Since embedded system for networked multimedia service has low level computing power as well as memory, the Null copy scheme can provide more improved QoS. Our image transmission experiment results on embedded linux target board(CPU utilization an Deadline miss rates) installed a web camera have shown that the proposed scheme can increase fast response and lower CPU overhead.
