  • For a reliable patient set-up verification, better portal films are needed to track relevant features. Simulator films are compared with portal films as a reference image in radiotherapy planning. This shows some possibilities of the use of image information of simulator images for enhancement and restorations of portal images which are very poor in quality compared with the simulator images. This paper present an approach that combine an associative memory, a kind of artificial neural networks with fuzzy image enhancement technique using genetic algorithm which determines the fuzzy region of membership function by the use of maximum entropy principles. A higher portal image quality than conventional technique is achieved.

  • An IE-FFT algorithm is implemented and applied to the electromagnetic (EM) solution of perfect electric conducting (PEC) scattering problems. The solution of the method of moments (MoM), based on the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE), is obtained for PEC objects with closed surfaces. The IE-FFT algorithm uses a uniform Cartesian grid to apply a global fast Fourier transform (FFT), which leads to significantly reduce memory requirement and speed up CPU with an iterative solver. The IE-FFT algorithm utilizes two discretizations, one for the unknown induced surface current on the planar triangular patches of 3D arbitrary geometries and the other on a uniform Cartesian grid for interpolating the free-space Green's function. The uniform interpolation of the Green's functions allows for a global FFT for far-field interaction terms, and the near-field interaction terms should be adequately corrected. A 3D block-Toeplitz structure for the Lagrangian interpolation of the Green's function is proposed. The MFIE formulation with the IE-FFT algorithm, without the help of a preconditioner, is converged in certain iterations with a generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method. The complexity of the IE-FFT is found to be approximately $O(N^{1.5})$and $O(N^{1.5}logN)$ for memory requirements and CPU time, respectively.

  • This thesis explains the development of multiple LCD system with the additional function to maximize the utilization of PC contents. The newly developed system is composed of host LCD and slave LCD. Host LCD decodes and outputs the image and voice of NTSC, PAL, SECAM signals. It also converts the decoded signals into LVDS signals before transmitting them to slave LCD stage. In addition, the installation of CF Memory and USB Memory helps display multi-media data. Unlike the host LCD, since not including the tuner and memory part, the slave LCD can't receive TV signals and play video signals. It only has the function to receive LVDS image signals and display on a LCD panel. This newly developed multi-LCD system has competitiveness in various aspects. With its simple structure, the failure rate, price and display power are relatively low due to its simplification of the control part. It has price and functional competitiveness as the product whose host LCD can control the entire slave LCD in terms of channel, volume, and video output.

  • This paper describes a design of an adaptive baseband modem based on TDMA(time division multiple access) with a relay protocol function for wireless personal area networks. The designed baseband modem is controlled by a master synchronization signal and can be configured a relay network up to 14 hops. For efficient data relay communications, the internal buffer design is optimized by implementing a priority memory bus controller to a single port memory. And the priority memory bus controller is also designed to minimize the number of synthesized logic gates. To implement the synchronization function of the narrowband TDMA relay communication, the number of gates has been reduced by dividing the frame synchronization circuits and the network slot synchronization circuits. By using these methods, the number of gates are used about 37%(34,000 gates) on Xilinx FPGA XC6SLX9 which has 90,000 gates. For the 1024-bit frame size with a 32-bit synchronization word, the communication reception rate is 96.4%. The measured maximum transmission delay of the designed baseband modem is 230.4 msec for the 14-hop relay communication.

  • This paper describes the smart structural system that uses smart materials for real-time monitoring and active control of bolted joints in steel structures. The impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, which utilize the electro-mechanical coupling property of piezoelectric materials, was used to detect loose bolts in bolted joints. By monitoring the measured electrical impedance and comparing it with the measured baseline, a bolt loosening damage was detected. The damage was evaluated quantitatively using the damage metrics in conductance signature with respect to the healthy states. When loosening damage was detected in the bolted joint, the external heater actuated the shape memory alloy (SMA) washer. Then the heated SMA washer expanded axially and adjusted the bolt tension to restore the lost torque. An experiment was conducted by integrating the piezoelectric-material-based SHM function and the SMA-based active control function on a bolted joint, after which the performance of thesmart self-healing joint system was investigated.

  • For the fabrication of bulk near-net-shape Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloys, consolidation of Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders are useful because of their brittle property. In the present study, $Ti_{50}Ni_{30}Cu_{20}$ shape memory alloy powders were prepared by gas atomization and martensitic transformation temperatures and microstructures of those powders were investigated as a function of powder size. The size distribution of the powders was measured by conventional sieving, and sieved powders with the specific size range of 25 to $150\;{\mu}m$ were chosen for this examination. XRD analysis showed that the B2-B19 martensitic transformation occurred in the powders. In DSC curves of the as-atomized $Ti_{50}Ni_{30}Cu_{20}$ powders as a function of powder size, only one clear peak was found on each cooling and heating curve. The martensitic transformation start temperature($M_s$) of the $25-50\;{\mu}m$ powders was $31.5^{\circ}C$. The $M_s$ increased with increasing powder size and the difference of $M_s$ between $25-50\;{\mu}m$ powders and $100-150\;{\mu}m$ powders is only $1^{\circ}C$. The typical microstructure of the rapidly solidified powders showed cellular morphology and very small pores were observed in intercellular regions.

  • Data in a image compression codec are processed with a specific regular block size. The processing order of block sized data is changed in specific function blocks and the data is packed in memory and read by a new sequence. To maintain a regular throughput rate, double buffering is normally used that interleaving two block sized memory to do concurrent read and write operations. Single buffering using only one block sized memory can be adopted to the simple data reordering, but when a complicate reordering occurs, irregular address changes prohibit from implementing adequate address generating for single buffering. This paper shows that there is a predictable and recurring regularity of changing address access orders within a finite updating counts and suggests an effective method to implement. The data reordering function using suggested idea is designed with HDL and implemented with TSMC 0.18 CMOS process library. In various scan blocks, it shows more than 40% size reduction compared with a conventional method.

  • Background: Gintonin is a new material of ginseng that acts through the ginseng-derived lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptor ligand. The gintonin-enriched fraction (GEF) inhibits amyloid plaque accumulation in the cortex and hippocampus, improves cognitive dysfunction by increasing acetylcholine levels, and promoted hippocampal neurogenesis in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease. We evaluated the effect of the GEF on the cognitive performance of subjects with subjective memory impairment (SMI). Methods: In this eight-week, randomized, assessor- and participant-blinded, placebo-controlled study, participants with SMI were assigned to three groups receiving placebo, GEF 300 mg/day or GEF 600 mg/day. The Korean versions of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (K-ADAS), Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), and Stroop color-word test (K-SCWT) were also evaluated along with the safety profiles. Results: One hundred thirty-six participants completed the study. After eight weeks, we analyzed intergroup differences in primary or secondary outcome score changes. When we compared the GEF group with the placebo group, we observed significant improvements in the K-ADAS and K-SCWT scores. The GEF group did not show a significant improvement in K-MMSE and BDI scores compared to the placebo group. No adverse events were observed in the gintonin and placebo groups for eight weeks. Conclusion: The GEF is safe and effective in improving subjective cognitive impairment related to both the K-ADAS and K-SCWT in this study. However, further large-scale and randomized controlled studies are warranted to secure other cognitive function tests besides the K-ADAS and K-SCWT, and to confirm the findings of the current study.
