  • Magnetic properties and microstructures of $Nd_{12}Fe_{80}B_{6}(Nb,\;M)$ (M=Ti/Cu/Ga) melt-spun ribbons prepared by single wheel technique have been studied. The results of microstructural study have shown that Ga is effective for the orientation of c-axis normal to the ribbon plane. The Ga-added melt-spun ribbon, $Nd_{12}Fe_{80}B_{6}(Nb,\;Ga)$, quenched at $V_{s}=17.9\;m/s$ was mostly composed of fine grains of about 30 nm in size with the textured free-side surface. The powder of this ribbon aligned in mag-netic field showd a high remanence of 0.87 T which was about 5 % higher than that of ribbon itself. It is believed that there is a possibility to fabricate a new type of HIREM melt-spun ribbon with highly textured free-side surface.

  • Abstract Co-and/or AI-added Nd-Fe-B-based magnetic alloys were fabricated by using vacuum induction melting frunace, and melt-spun ribbons were made of the magnetic alloys with single roll rapid quenching method. The variation of magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons as a function of Cuwheel velocity (Vs) were investigated. Bonded magnets were made of the optimally quenched ribbon fragments, and the magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons and the bonded magnets were studied, relating to the microstructure and crystalline structure. Cu-wheel surface velocity had a strong effect on the magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons, and the maximum properties were obtained around Vs =20m/sec. The optimally quenched ribbon had a cellura-type microstructure, in which fine N$d_2$F$e_14$B grains were surrounded by thin Nd-rich phase. In case of a 2.1at% AI-added melt-spun ribbon, the magnetic properties were as follows: iHc, Br, and (BH)max were 15.5KOe, 7.8KG and 8.5MGOe respectively. And resin bonded magnets were fabricated by mixing optimally quenched ribbon fragments with 2.5wt % polyamide resin, compacting and binding at room temperature. The iHc, Br and (BH)max of bonded magnet were lO.2KOe, 4.4KG and 3.3MGOe respectively. And hot-pressed magnets were made by pressing the overquenched ribbons at high temperature. The magnetic properties of hot-pressed magnets were better than those of bonded magnets, and when the holding time was 8 minutes, the iHc, Br, and (BH)max of the hot-pressed magnet were 1O.8KOe, 7.3KG and 8.0MGOe respectively. Domain structure was mainly maze pattern, which means that the easy magnetization axis could be aligned, and the domain width of the hot-pressed magnets was smaller than that of bonded magnets.

  • The mechnial properties such as fracture strength, ductility and fatigue strength of Cu shape memory alloy are lower than those of Ti-Ni SMA, because of their high elastic anisotropy and large grain size. And in order to improve the mechanical property of Cu SMA, some techniques such as casting method by addition of refining element, powder metallurgy and rapid solidification process have been studied on the refinement of the grain size of Cu SMA. This study was carried out to refine the grain size of CuAlNi SMA by applying the melt spinning method. According to this study, the conclusions are as follows; - grain size of the melt-spun ribbon was about $1\mum$ - there was not change in grain size, although increasing of hot pressing temperature -grain size of the hot-extruded specimen was about $30-40\mum$, it is more refiner than that of castings

  • It has been found that the as-quenched ribbons of $Sm_{x}Fe_{100-x-y}Ti_{y}(3.8{\leq}x{\leq}11.5,\;3.8{\leq}y{\leq}19.2)$ are composed of metastable $TbCu_{7}-type$ structure, ${\alpha}-(Fe,\;Ti),\;Fe_{2}Ti$ and an unknown phase accompanying strong diffraction line at $d=2.14{\AA}$. The metastable $TbCu_{7}-type$ phase, which was formed by rapid quenching, did not transform fully to the stable phases after annealing at $850^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes except the one existed in $SmFe_{11}Ti$ melt-spun ribbon. The $SmFe_{11}Ti$ melt-spun ribbon, annealed at $850^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes in vacuum, was found to be composed of $ThMn_{12}$. $\alpha$-(Fe, Ti) and $Fe_{2}Ti$ phases. The formation of $\alpha$-(Fe, Ti) and $Fe_{2}Ti$ phases in this melt-spun ribbon was due to the evaporation of Sm atoms during the high temperature annealing. The atomic ratios for the surface and the inside of $SmFe_{11}Ti$ melt-spun ribbon annealed in vacuum were $SmFe_{25.8}Ti_{2.6}$ and $SmFe_{11.7}Ti_{1.0}$ respectively. It is thought to be that much of $\alpha$-(Fe, Ti) and $Fe_{2}Ti$ phases exist on the surface of ribbon.

  • $Nd_{14}Fe_{80}B_6$ ribbon alloy was manufactured with using melt-spinning method and analyzed the magnetic properties according to the manufacturing conditions. The microstructure and magnetic properties of melt-spun ribbons are sensitively dependent on the quench rate and annealing conditions. As-quenched $Nd_{14}Fe_{80}B_6$ ribbons with optimum magnetic properties are obtained at wheel speed($v_s$) of about 20m/sec and over quenched ribbons show optimum magnetic properties at $v_s$=22m/see when annealed for 30 minutes at $600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum. The crystallization temperature($T_k$) of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase is about $595^{\circ}C$ in the DTA analysis.

  • The influence of crystallization treatment on the structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of $Gd_{71}Ni_{29}$ melt-spun ribbons has been investigated in detail. Annealing of the melt-spun samples at 610 K for 30 min, a majority phase with a $Fe_3C$-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Pnma) and a minority phase with a CrB-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Cmcm) were obtained in the amorphous matrix. The amorphous melt-spun ribbons undergo a second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition at 122 K. For the annealed samples, two magnetic phase transitions caused by amorphous matrix and $Gd_3Ni$ phases occur at 82 and 100 K, respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy change $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ is $9.0J/(kg{\cdot}K)$ (5T) at 122 K for the melt-spun ribbons. The values of $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ in annealed ribbons are 1.0 and $5.7J/(kg{\cdot}K)$, corresponding to the two adjacent magnetic transitions.

  • Highly alloyed high speed tool steels(ASP steels) were rapidly solidified by melt spinning process, and the microstructures of melt spun tool steel ribbons were examined by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscope. The microstructure of melt spun tool steel ribbon was found to be consisted of ${\delta}-ferrite$ cells surrounded by austenite and V-rich MC carbides. The size of ${\delta}-ferrite$ cells and intercellular MC carbides were about $0.4{\mu}m$ or less and 30nm or less, respectively. From the melt spun tool steel ribbons, only the MC type carbide phase was observed, instead of $M_2C$, $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_6C$ carbides which were generally observed in other rapidly solidified high speed steels. Such a change in type of carbide phase formed could be attributed to the increase in alloying content of vanadium and carbon. However, changes in microsturcture of melt spun tool steels with alloying content of cobalt, vanadium and carbon were not observed.

  • The effect of quenching speed of melt-spinning on intrinsic coercivity ($_iH_c$$) of annealed ribbons and the crystallization behavior from amorphous $Nd_{14.73}Fe_{78.67}B_{6.60}$ alloy have been studied. We have found that the intrinsic coecivity for annealed melt-spun ribbon is reduced with increasing of quenching rate. $\alpha$-Fe and $Fe_3B$ were formed as intermediate phases prior to the formation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase during crystallization. The $Fe_3B$ is disappeared with crystallization of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase. But the $\alpha$-Fe phase is retained in fully crystallized ribbon by annealing. The intrinsic coercivity loss of annealed ribbon with increasing of quenching speed is believed to be due to existence of soft magnetic phase $\alpha$-Fe in annealed ribbons.

  • Change in phases, microstructures, and magnetic properties by the variation of quench rate and heat treatment were investigated for melt-spun $Fe_{77}Pr_{15}C_8$ ribbons. The amorphization of as-spun ribbons increased as the quench rate increased. As a result, the ribbon quenched at 40 m/s was almost entirely amorphous. Similarly to cast alloys, the primary phase in crystalline ribbons quenched at 10 m/s was $\alpha$-Fe followed by the secondary $Fe_{17}Pr_2C_x$. Crystalline phases were still dominant in the ribbon spun at 20 m/s, but in this case crystallization of $Fe_{17}Pr_2C_x$ was remarkable with a little suppression of $\alpha$-Fe. At 30 m/s an amorphous phase obviously dominated in the as-spun ribbons with small fraction of crystals. Therefore, substantial amount of hard magnetic $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ was not obtained from the as-spun state but, as in cast alloys, produced only by a solid-state transformation. Within a few minutes fine grains of $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ were easily obtained at relatively low temperature when the degree of amorphization of as-spun ribbons was higher. The grain size of $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ was well less than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The ribbons quenched at 20 or 30 m/s yielded higher coercivities after heat treatment.
