Objectives : The paper raises an objection to the word '涕' being used to refer to nasal discharge, and proposes a word for nasal discharge upon studying a set of medical books. Methods : The author finds and confirms the dictionary definition of '涕' and studies how they are used differently in medical books. Through this study, the author shows how the word '涕' is used incorrectly and makes deductions for its reason. The author takes a look at the old form of the word '涕', its etymological origin, takes a guess as to the real word that should have been used to refer to nasal discharge, and find examples of instances where this correct word for nasal discharge are more appropriate. Results & Conclusions : In medical books such as Huangdineijing Suwen, '涕' is used to mean nasal discharge, but the word's dictionary definition does not validate such usage. Yugunryeombu (劉君廉夫), in its commentary for Somun, used '?' and '鼻夷' for '涕', and '?' means nasal discharge and used as same as '涕' when its used to mean tear. This is a phenomenon that originated from '弟' and '夷' being used interchangeably which led to the incorrect usage of '?'. If someone were to refer to nasal discharge, he needs to use '?'. '鼻夷' is believed to be the same word as '弟鼻', which is the old form of '?', and it means both tear(pronounced 'Che') and nasal discharge(pronounced 'Je'). However, the pronunciation different between 'Che' and 'Je', and its definition as tear, is divided in later periods into '涕' following the shape of '弟'. Following the shape of '夷', the meaning of nasal discharge remains in '?' while retaining the pronunciation of 'yi'. Therefore, the word '涕' used to mean nasal discharge is an incorrect form of '?', and should all be re-written to '?'.

Objectives : To determine the meaning of 'yi(噫)' from verses containing the character in 『Huangdineijing』. Methods : First, examples of the usage of 'yi(噫)' in Huangdineijing were collected and analyzed, followed by examples from the other books of the time when 『Huangdineijing』 was written. Finally the term 'ai' which surfaced in a later period than Huangdineijing to refer to eructation was examined. Results & Conclusions : Based on analysis of the usage of 'yi(噫)' in the 『Huangdineijing』, out of a total of 20 cases, 14 cases could be categorized as referring to eructation, 4 cases were difficult to categorize as eructation, and 2 cases were indeterminable. At the time of publication of 『Huangdineijing』, the character 'yi(噫)' was generally used to refer to eructation when used in a medical context, while in non-medical contexts it referred to sigh, or groan. The appearance of 'ai(噯)' is predicted to be during the Song period, but its appearance did not take away the meaning of eructation from 'yi(噫)' and both were used. Based on the change of meaning of 'yi(噫)', we can determine the approximate time when certain contents of the 『Huangdineijing』 were constructed. In the case of '心爲噫[Heart makes 'yi(噫)']', we can understand it as the pectoral qi leaking through the throat manifesting as a sigh in order to relieve stagnation of the excessiveness of the Heart. In cases of deficiency, when the Stomach function is weak, the body is likely to let out a sigh. The term meaning sighing which is 'taixi(大息)' was understood as symptomatic of problems of the Gallbladder as well as the Heart.

A study on cooperative medical treatment system between oriental and western medical practitioners was conducted from March through August 1997 in order to determine a productive model of cooperation of two medical parts for treatment of patients. Questionnaires were distributed to 195 medical doctors(M.D.) and 195 doctors of oriental medicine(O.M.D.) working in clinics and hospitals in six major cities. Statistical analysis tools used for this study were frequency, t-test and multiple regression by using SPSS/P.C package. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The respondents were composed of male docotors(78%) and female doctors(22%) and 68.2% of M.D. and 97% of O.M.D. were interested in the other medical part. The doctors of both disciplines had some limitation on treatment of patients but they were reluctant to refer their patients to other doctors in different discipline. 2. M.D assumed that oriental medicine was more effective for chronic diseases, and O.M.D. thought that western medicine was more effective for acute diseases. 92.3% of O.M.D.s responded that even though they do not utilize western medical technology for diagnosis, they believed the results of diagnoses by western medical technology. 3. 60.5% of O.M. and 93.3% of O.M.D. said that cooperative medical treatment system could be necessary for patients and it would be effective for control of diseases and 69% of western medical doctors and 99% of oriental medical doctors agreed that oriental medical practice would be more effective for cerebellar vascular accidents than other diseases. 77.4% of western medical doctors and 92.3% of oriental medical doctors responded that the students of two different disciplines have to be taught on the other disciplines. 82.6% of western medical doctors and 83.3% oriental medical doctors agreed that it would be necessary to have collaborative research between scientists in two disciplines. 81.5% of M.D.s and 93.3% of O.M.D.s believed that they had prejudice and distrust on other discipline 4.90% of the doctors were not satisfied with the government medical policies on health insurance, legal matters, and health delivery system. 5. 75.4% of M.D.s and 50.2% of O.M.D.s said that two medical disciplines should be integrated, but they were skeptical on that. 75.3% of M.D.s thought that western hospitals should employ O.M.D.s Finally this study recommended that western medical students study oriental medicine and the vice versa, and M.D.s and O.M.D.s should have seminars and workshops to exchange knowledge, and experiences. It is also recommended that medical laws be revised to allow medical doctors refer the patients whom they can not handle to oriental medical doctors and the vice versa.
This study was conducted to evaluate the necessity and development of a therapeutic diet manual which contains basic nutritional science concepts that refer to nutritional management of patients in clinical settings. One hundred and fifty-four medical doctors, forty dietitians, and sixty-three students majoring in nutrition participated. The survey included questions about nutritional knowledge, nutrition-related concerns, and nutrition counseling in medical practice. The knowledge score of medical doctors was 47.7%. Lower percentages occurred in the amount of sodium allowed in the sodium restricted diet and the food sources of vitamin B1 were 16.9%, 31.2% respectively. Seventy-four percent of doctors strongly urged nutrition counseling for patients. Seventy one percent of doctors agreed that the present medical-nutrition education was inadequate in medical school curricura. Most doctors (79.2%) agreed that a therapeutic diet manual would be helpful and necessary. The average percentage of nutritional knowledge test scores for dietitians and students majoring in nutrition were 76.0% and 68.3%, respectively. Over ninety percent of dietitians working and their prescriptions. The result of this study strongly suggests that the development of a comprehensive therapeutic diet manual is necessary, especially for medical doctors.

Because most of the medical literatures published in Korea are not listed on the foreign famous index or abstracts journals, it is necessary to index and abstract them domestically. Increasing number of medical literatures makes one final to refer to informations needs without nay secondary materials. Recently, any indexes and abstracts of medical literatures are published, but there are no tertiary lists. Because of that fact, it is difficult to know the status quo of the bibliographic works for the medical literatures in Korea. In this research, status quo of indexing of abstracting of articles in domestic medical journals were investigated and systems or contents of the indexing an abstracting in Korea were analyzed to suggest the standard of bibliographic control.

Stand-alone cervical cage consists of a PEEK body, Ti plate, and screw, which are configured as a single-piece. Through a single operation, this implantable medical device is capable of completely fixing the cervical vertebral body. For example, instead of a plate, which is normally used, the intervertebral disc is removed and replaced with a cervical cage. It should be noted that in Korea, KFDA guidelines for a stand-alone cervical cage have not yet been suggested. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present the systematic study of the static compression test, static torsion test, dynamic compression test, and expulsion test. Further, the test method is designed to refer to the ASTM standard and relative literature.
The authors investigated 131 nonpsychiatric physicians' attitudes toward psychiatric consultation, using questionnaires. A comparison was made as regards psychiatric consultation from nonpsychiatric physicians over position(staffs vs. residents) and department(medical vs. surgical). These findings are as follows ; 1) 51.9 percent of nonpsychiatric physicians estimated that less than 30 percent of their patientshadpgychiatricproblems. 2) The percentage of the patients referred for psychiatric consultation were 30 or less than 30 percent 3) Staffs tried to refer their patients to psychiatric department for psychiatric consultation more frequently than residents. 4) Medical physicians tried to refer their patients to psychiatric department for psychiatric consultation more frequently than surgeons. 5) Psychiatric consultation was estimated to be most frequently requested for overt psychiatric symptoms(23.0%) and past history of psychiatric treatment(20.8%). 6) The most frequent causes of not referring to department of psychiatry were found to be the patients' rejection(46.8%) and non-psychiatric physicians' dissatisfaction with the results of consultation (22.2%). 7) Medical physicians tended to explain the reasons for psychiatric consultation more adequately than surgeons. 8) Residents more specifically wrote the reasons for psychiatric consultation on the chart than staffs. The results suggest that staffs are more active in psychiatric consultation than residents, whereas medical physicians are more active than surgeons. Thus, education should be more emphasized for surgeons and residents, especially for the latter for effective consultation-liaison activity. On the other hand, psychiatrists should try to improve nonpsychiatric physicians' dissatisfactions with the results of psychiatric consultations, which will positively change their attitudes toward psychiatric consultation.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to develop two medical tourism system models which explain medical tourism phenomenon with a systemic approach. Methodology/Approach: This research was conducted using a qualitative data analysis which mainly refer previous references in relation to medical tourism in the areas of tourism and medicine. Leiper's tourism system model was utilized as a conceptual framework. In-depth interviews with experts in the area were attempted in order to pretest the models. Findings: This research suggests a medical tourism system framework and a medical service provision framework. The first model presents medical tourism components and their relationships within a framework presented in a diagram. The second model shows the relationships among medical services required by medical tourists, the service providers, and service human resources along with movements of medical tourists. Practical Implications: The first model presents a spatial composition of medical tourism components and their relationships, whereas the second model shows the linkage among medical services, the service providers, and relevant service human resources along with time sequential steps of medical tourists. These two models are complementary and may be used as useful tools to observe medical tourism phenomenon with a systemic and holistic approach. These two models may enable stake holders avoid unnecessary confusions and conflicts that result in duplication of government policies and a waste of budget and human resources.
