  • As a basic experiment to develope biological pretreatment proces~ in water treatment, the experiments on biodegradability and isothermal adsorption of activated carbon were performed on refractories such as humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS which caused the problems in drinking water treatment. Also, the treatabilities on humic acid were examined in the continuous flow type reactors. The removal efficiencies of humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS in the biodegradable experiments for 5 days were 20.1%, 73.4%, 91.7% and 97.5%, respectively. In the isothermal adsorption test of refractories on activated carbon to be used as a media in the continuous flow type reactors, ABS and phenol are adsorbed easily, but humic acid and $NH_3-N$ are difficult to be done. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in granular activated carbon(GAC) reactor were about 7-8% higher than in biological activated carbon(BAC) reactor. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in biological fluidized bed(BFB) reactor were about 30% in GAC media, but were almost zero in sea sand media.

  • A new a posteriori error estimator is introduced and applied to variational inequalities occurring in problems of flow through porous media. In order to construct element-wise a posteriori error estimates the global error is localized by a special mixed formulation in which continuity conditions at interfaces are treated as constraints. This approach leads to error indicators which provide rigorous upper bounds of the element errors. A discussion of a compatibility condition for the well-posedness of the local error analysis problem is given. Two numerical examples are solved to check the compatibility of the local problems and convergence of the effectivity index both in a local and a global sense with respect to local refinements.

  • A numerical scheme based on a coordinate transform into stream function-velocity potential is proposed to solve heat and momentum transfer in porous media with phase change. A significant simplification of both computational domain and governing equations can be achieved by the transform. The dispersion term in the flow through porous media, which is important at the phase change interface, can be successfully incorporated into the numerical scheme without introducing any further computational complications.

  • Oxidation of phenol in aqueous media by electro-Fenton process using Ru-Sn-Sb/graphite electrode has been studied. Hydrogen peroxide was electrically generated by reaction of dissolved oxygen in acidic solutions containing supporting electrolyte and $Fe^{2+}$ was added in aqueous media. Phenol degradation experiments were performed in the presence of electrolyte media at pH 3. Effect of operating parameters such as current, electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl and $Na_2SO_4$) and concentration, $Fe^{2+}$ concentration, air flow rate and phenol concentration were investigated to find the best experimental conditions for achieving overall phenol removal. Results showed that current of 2 A, NaCl electrolyte concentration of 2g/l, 0.5M concentration of $Fe^{2+}$, air flow rate of 1l/min were the best conditions for mineralization of the phenol by electro-Fenton.

  • The facility of constructed wet land combined with filter media was examined in order to improve the water quality of a polluted stream, which has been performed as a part of national projects. Throughout 2 years of operation for a stream, it can provide the design and operating parameters for the purpose of future construction. The influent flow rate was about 50% against the design capacity. The removal efficiencies of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P were 62.9%, 47.1%, 74.8%, 22.4% and 33.5%, respectively. In order to keep this facility stable, the removal of surface filter media and supplement should be periodically conducted. In addition, the proper selection of sites is recommended not to be flooded.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the stream water quality by the experimental hybrid constructed wetland system. It consisted of the water layer, sand bed planted reeds, irises and roses, gravel bed, yellow-soil media bed and a flow shifter (FS) which can reverse top and bottom flow in the middle of the wetland. The organic compounds and nitrogen removal efficiencies varied with the seasons, namely temperature change. In summer, the mean efficiencies of COD and TN in the outflow from this wetland system were 63.4 and 48.0% and shown the highest, respectively, whereas, the suspended solids and phosphorus removal efficiencies seemed to be less affected by temperature. As a result of inspecting the decreasing trend of pollutants, nitrification-denitrification in the wetland was the major removal mechanism for nitrogen, the nitrogen reduction was especially enhanced by the application of a FS in the wetland, and phosphorus reduction was mainly occurred as a consequence of adsorption of the yellow-soil media.

  • The sloshing tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure by the liquid on the tank. These flow characteristics inside the sloshing tank can generate the uncomfortable sloshing noise. In the present study, a numerical analysis for the reduction of a fuel tank sloshing noise was performed. To simulate the flow characteristics in a sloshing tank with partially filled liquid, a VOF method was used for interfacial flows by applying a momentum source term for the sloshing motion in a non-inertial reference frame. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. For the reduction of the sloshing noise, the horizontal and vertical baffles and porous media inside a sloshing tank were considered and numerically analyzed in the present study. For various installations of these baffles and porous media, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank were obtained along with the impact pressure on the wall and the height of the free surface along the wall. These basic results can be used for the design of the actual vehicular fuel tank with the reduced sloshing noise.

  • Due to the strict requirements of emerging applications, per-flow admission control is gaining increasing importance. One way to implement per-flow admission control is using an onpath resource reservation protocol, where the admission decision is made hop-by-hop after a new flow request arrives at the network boundary. The next-steps in signaling (NSIS) working group of the Internet engineering task force (IETF) is standardising such an on-path signaling protocol. One of the reservation methods considered by NSIS is reduced-state mode, which, suiting the differentiated service (DiffServ) concept, only allows per-class states in interior nodes of a domain. Although there are clear benefits of not dealing with per-flow states in interior nodes-like scalability and low complexity-, without per-flow states the handling of re-routed flows, e.g., after a failure, is a demanding and highly non-trivial task. To be applied in carrier-grade networks, the protocol needs to be resilient in this situation. In this article, we will explain the consequences of a route failover to resource reservation protocols: Severe congestion and incorrect admission decisions due to outdated reservation states. We will set requirements that handling solutions need to fulfill, and we propose extensions to reduced-state protocols accordingly. We show with a set of simulated scenarios that with the given solutions reduced-state protocols can handle re-routed flows practically as fast and robust as stateful protocols.

  • A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving cavitating flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media at isothermal condition and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

  • As the flow velocity and Reynolds number increase in rockfill porous media, the flow deviates from Darcy conditions. In this study, the permeability tests of rock column specimen and laboratory gabion weir model were carried out to investigate a head loss behaviour of flow through rockfill deposition in small river artificial recharge. Through column test, the nonlinear relationships between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient and coefficients were determined and the correlation formula of hydraulic mean radius and coefficients was proposed. The flow velocities and discharges in voids estimated by proposed equations were well matched with the measured values of laboratory gabion weir model.
