Background: Hypertonic saline is used for treating chronic pain; however, clinical studies that aid in optimizing therapeutic protocols are lacking. We aimed to determine the concentration of intrathecally injected hypertonic saline at which the effect reaches its peak as well as the underlying γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor-related antinociceptive mechanism. Methods: Spinal nerve ligation (SNL; left L5 and L6) was performed to induce neuropathic pain in rats weighing 250-300 g. Experiment 1: one week after implanting the intrathecal catheter, 60 rats were assigned randomly to intrathecal injection with 0.45%, 0.9%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% NaCl, followed by behavioral testing at baseline and after 30 minutes, 2 hours, 1 day, and 1 week to determine the minimal concentration which produced maximal analgesia. Experiment 2: after determining the optimal intrathecal hypertonic saline concentration, 60 rats were randomly divided into four groups: Sham, hypertonic saline without pretreatment, and hypertonic saline after pretreatment with one of two GABA receptor antagonists (GABAA [bicuculline], or GABAB [phaclofen]). Behavioral tests were performed at weeks 1 and 3 following each treatment. Results: Hypertonic saline at concentrations greater than 5% alleviated SNL-induced mechanical allodynia and had a significant therapeutic effect, while showing a partial time- and dose-dependent antinociceptive effect on thermal and cold hyperalgesia. However, pretreatment with GABA receptor antagonists inhibited the antinociceptive effect of 5% NaCl. Conclusions: This study indicates that the optimal concentration of hypertonic saline for controlling mechanical allodynia in neuropathic pain is 5%, and that its analgesic effect is related to GABAA and GABAB receptors.
This study investigated the effect of surface pretreatment, which removes native Cu oxides on Cu seed layer, on subsequent Cu electro-/electroless deposition in Cu interconnection. The native Cu oxides were removed by using citric acid-based solution frequently used in Cu chemical mechanical polishing process and the selective Cu oxide removal was successfully achieved by controlling the solution composition. The characterization of electro-/electrolessly deposited Cu films after the oxide removal was then performed in terms of film resistivity, surface roughness, etc. It was observed that the lowest film resistivity and surface roughness were obtained from the substrate whose native Cu oxides were selectively removed.
Crude protein (CP) content of mechanically ground rice straw into small particles by an electric grinder and reducing value (RV) and soluble protein (SP) in the culture filtrate were lower than that of the chopped straw into $5{\sim}6\;cm$ lengths when both ground and chopped straws were fermented with Aspergillus ochraceus, A. terreus or Trichoderma koningii, at steady conditions. The reduction rate of RV, SP and CP was 22.2, 2.4, 7.3%; 9.1, 4.9, 8.5% or 0.0, 0.0, 3.6% for the three fungi, respectively. Chemical pretreatment of straw by soaking in $NH_{4}OH$ for a day caused significant increase in CP of the fermented straw than the other alkali and acidic pretreatments. Gamma irradiation pretreatment of dry and wet straw with water, specially at higher doses, 100, 200 or 500 kGy, caused significant increase in RV and SP as CP in the fermented straw by any of these fungi. Chemical-physical combination pretreatment of rice straw reduced the applied dose of gamma irradiation required for increasing fermentable ability of fungi from 500 kGy to 10 kGy with approximately the same results. Significant increases in RV and SP of fermented straw generally occurred as the dose of gamma irradiation for pretreated straw, which combined with $NH_{4}OH$, gradually rose. Whereas, the increase percentage in CP of fermented straw that was pretreated by $NH_{4}OH-10\;kGy$ was 12.4%, 15.4% or 8.6% for A. ochraceus, A. terreus or T. koningii, respectively.

Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared using a two-step deep eutectic solvent (DES) and enzymatic pretreatment followed by mechanical defibrillation, and we examined the effects of enzymatic pretreatment conditions on different characteristics of the LCNFs thus obtained. The LCNFs yielded using the two-step DES pretreatment (Enz-LCNF) exhibited a well-defibrillated entangled web-like structure with an average fiber diameter ranging from 15.7 to 20.4 nm. Furthermore, we found that the average diameter and filtration time of the Enz-LCNFs decreased with an increase in enzyme concentration and enzymatic treatment time, whereas we detected a concomitant reduction in the tensile strength of the Enz-LCNF sheets. The Enz-LCNFs were characterized by a typical cellulose I structure, thereby indicating that the enzymatic treatment causes very little damage to the crystalline form.

In this study, Anaerobic sewage sludge in a batch reactor operation at $35^\circ{C}$ was used as the seed to investigate the effect of pretreatments of waste activated sludge and to evaluate its hydrogen production potential by anaerobic fermentation. Various pretreatments including physical, chemical and biological means were conducted to utilize for substrate. As a result, SCODcr of alkali and mechanical treatment was 15 and 12 times enhanced, compared with a supernatant of activated sludge. And SCODcr was 2 time increase after re-treatment with biological hydrolysis. Those were shown that sequential hybridized treatment of sludge by chemical & biological methods to conform hydrogen production potential in bath experiments. When buffer solution was added to the activated sludge, hydrogen production potential increased as compare with no addition. Combination of alkali and mechanical treatment was higher in hydrogen production potential than other treatments.

Electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis are important transport phenomena produced by external electric field applied to a microchannel containing a conductive fluid. We developed a CFD code to predict electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic flows in a microchannel with a uniform circular post array. Using the code, we calculated particle velocities driven by electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis, and conducted Monte Carlo simulations to visualize the particle motions. The code was validated by comparing the results with those from previous studies in literature. At a low electric field, electrokinesis and diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism. At a moderate electric field, dielectrophoresis is balanced with electrokinesis and diffusion, resulting in flowing filaments of particles in the microchannels. However, dielectrophoresis overwhelms the flow at a high electric field and traps particles locally. These results provide useful insight for optimizing design parameters of a microfluidic chip for biochemical analysis, especially for development of on-chip sample pretreatment techniques using electrokinetic and dielectrophoretic effects.
The pretreatment condition for uniform distribution of SiC whisker in A2O3-SiCw composites has been determined and the mechanical properties of the composites with various whisker contents have been measured. Good dispersion of the whisker can be obtained in a solution of pH=10.45 by ball milling and ultrasonic treatment. The relative density of hot pressed composites decreases with the whisker content up to 40vol%, but is found to be satisfactory, over 98% for all samples. The mechanical property of the composites is sensitive to the whisker dispersion. Uniform distributjion of the whisker is critical in order to guarantee good mechanical property. The samples containing 20~30vol% whisker show the best mechanical property within the studied range.
This study is to develop the pretreatment for the excess and digested sludge by electro-coagulation and dewatering. Electrocoagulation is applied to excess and digested sludge before transferring to the piston type press for dewatering. Piston type filter press as a laboratory scale plant was used to estimate the dewaterability. MMD of excess sludge was increased from initial diameter of particles(34.16 ${\mu}m$) to the 87%(64.01 ${\mu}m$) after electrocoagulation. AI electrode is more effective than Fe electrode for the dewaterability of excess sludge. Electrodewatering after electrocoagulation as pretreatment makes the water content of sludge cake $50{\sim}60$ wt%.

Segregation of binary particle systems in a horizontally gyrated bed has been experimentally studied to recover the heavy metals from municipal waste incineration (MWI) ash. Differences in density and size had less effect on segregation. Effective segregation took place under the centrifugal effect of 1 or less for any particle size ratio. Zn, Cu and Pb were concentrated in the upper side of bed by the horizontal vibration. However, there was less change in concentration for other metals such as Mg, Al and Fe etc. The separation system with the horizontal gyrating separator proved to be an effective method for the pretreatment of recovering Zn, Cu and Pb from incineration residues.

Quantitation methods of total petroleum hydrocarbons to determinate oil contaminated level in soil were discussed. Extraction characteristics of several pretreatment methods and practical detection limit and reappearances in gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. with each pretreatment method were investigated. The obtained results showed that the newly adopted quantitation method and mechanical shaking extraction method using methanol with extraction solvent are more practical and applicable to real sample than the conventional methods. In applying these methods to gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil which are major source of soil contamination, the practical quantitation limit and % relative standard deviation was able to determine with range of 2.5 - 10 ppm, 5 - 7 %.
