  • The main objective of this article is to investigate the response of different fiber metal laminates subjected to low velocity impact experimentally and numerically via finite element method (FEM). Hence, two different fiber metal laminate (FML) samples (GLARE/CARALL) are made of 7075-T6 aluminum sheets and polymeric composites reinforced by E-glass/carbon fibers. In order to study the responses to the low velocity impacts, samples are tested by drop weight machine. The projectiles are released from 1- and 1.5-meters height were the speed reaches to 4.42 and5.42 meter per second and the impact energies are measured as 6.7 and 10 Joules. In addition to experimental study, finite element simulation is done and results are compared. Finally, a detailed study on the maximum deflection, delamination and damages in laminates and geometry's effect of projectiles on the laminate response is done. Results show that maximum deflection caused by spherical projectile for GLARE samples is more apparent in comparison with the CARALL samples. Moreover, the maximum deflection of GLARE samples subjected to spherical projectile with 6.7 Joules impact energy, 127% increases in comparison with the CARALL samples in spite of different total thickness.

  • For last couple of decades, uses of TFI-LCDs have been expanded to many FPD(Flat Panel Display) applications including mobile displays, desktop monitors and TVs. Furthermore, there has been growing demand for increasingly larger LCD TVs. In order to meet this demand as well as to improve productivity, LCD manufactures have continued to install larger-generation display fabrication facilities which are capable of producing more panels and larger displays per mother glass(substrate). As the size of mother glass becomes larger, a robot required to handle the glass becomes bigger accordingly, and its end effectors(arms) are extended to match the glass size. With this configuration, a considerable static deflection occurs at the end of the robot arms. In order to stack maximum number of mother glasses on a given footprint, the static deflection should be compensated. This paper presents a novel static deflection compensation algorithm. This algorithm requires neither measurement instrument nor additional vertical axis on the robot. It is realized by robot controller software. The forward and inverse kinematics considering compensation always guarantees a unique solution, so the proposed algorithm can be applied to an arbitrary robot position. The algorithm reduced static deflection by 40% in stationary robot state experiment. It also improved vertical path accuracy up to 60% when the arm was running at its maximum speed. This algorithm has been commercialized and successfully applied to a seventh-generation LCD glass-handling robot.

  • Drying shrinkage in concrete caused by drying and the associated decrease in moisture content is one of the most important factors influencing the long-term deflection of steel-concrete composite slabs. The presence of profiled steel decking at the bottom of the composite slab causes non-uniform drying from top and bottom of the slab resulting non-uniform drying shrinkage. In this paper, a hydro-mechanical analysis method is proposed to simulate the development of non-uniform shrinkage through the depth of the composite slab. It also demonstrates how this proposed analysis method can be used in conjunction with previously presented structural analysis model to calculate the effects of non-uniform shrinkage on the long-term deflection of the slab. The method uses concrete moisture diffusion model to simulate the non-uniform drying of composite slab. Then mechanical models are used to calculate resulting shrinkage strain from non-uniform drying and its effect on the long-term behaviour of the composite slabs. The performance of the proposed analysis method is validated against experimental data.

  • In order to raise productivity of the OLED and realization of the OLED TV, it is required to improve the design of the board size glass panel. The large-size glass substrate has some difficulties regarding its deflection during handling operation due to its small thickness (0.7t) which is not even enough to stand its mass itself. This paper is demonstrating a new solution of this difficult through clamping and bending end condition, which helps to minimize the deflection of the glass substrate.

  • In this paper, sliding mode control (SMC) is designed and applied to an elastic structure to suppress some of its vibration modes. The system is an elastic beam clamped on one end and the designed controller uses only the deflection measurement of the free end. The infinite dimensional mathematical model of the beam is reduced to an ordinary differential equation set to represent the behavior of required modes. Since the states of the finite dimensional model are not physically measurable quantities, an observer is designed to estimate these states by measuring the tip deflection of the beam. The performance of the observer is important because the observed states are used in the SMC design. In this study, by using the output information, an observer is designed and tested to estimate the states of the finite dimensional model of the beam. Then the designed SMC is applied to the experimental beam system which gives satisfactory suppressed vibrations.

  • The finite solutions of deflection and the corresponding in-plane stress values of the graded sandwich shallow shell structure are computed in this research article via a higher-order polynomial shear deformation kinematics. The shell structural equilibrium equation is derived using the variational principle in association with a nine noded isoprametric element (nine degrees of freedom per node). The deflection values are computed via an own customized MATLAB code including the current formulation. The stability of the current finite element solutions including their accuracies have been demonstrated by solving different kind of numerical examples. Additionally, a few numerical experimentations have been conducted to show the influence of different design input parameters (geometrical and material) on the flexural strength of the graded sandwich shell panel including the geometrical configurations.

  • Diaphragm compressor is widely used for hydrogen compression because it achieves high gas pressure without gas contamination. Diaphragm deflecting in the cavity with high pressure formed by an oil compression is the most important component in the compressor. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain deflection degree of diaphragm to predict the damage point of diaphragm. The objective of this study is to estimate the diaphragm's damage point through diaphragm deflection test by implementing with strain gauges attached on several radial points. Without gas compression, strain sum of each points varied as similarly as the variation of the pressure with respect to time. And while the motor speed was slower than 400rpm, the strain near the rim was larger than that of the center. When motor speed, however, was over 500rpm, strain became similar to that of the center and the rim. With gas compression, it was shown that the variation of the strain sum was delayed against that of the pressure and the strain near the rim was much higher than that of the center.

  • The aim of this research is to analyze buckling and bending behavior of a sandwich Reddy beam with porous core and composite face sheets reinforced by boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and shape memory alloy (SMA) wires resting on Vlasov's foundation. To this end, first, displacement field's equations are written based on the higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). And also, to model the SMA wire properties, constitutive equation of Brinson is used. Then, by utilizing the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations are derived and also, Navier's analytical solution is applied to solve the governing equations of the sandwich beam. The effect of some important parameters such as SMA temperature, the volume fraction of SMA, the coefficient of porosity, different patterns of BNNTs and porous distributions on the behavior of buckling and bending of the sandwich beam are investigated. The obtained results show that when SMA wires are in martensite phase, the maximum deflection of the sandwich beam decreases and the critical buckling load increases significantly. Furthermore, the porosity coefficient plays an important role in the maximum deflection and the critical buckling load. It is concluded that increasing porosity coefficient, regardless of porous distribution, leads to an increase in the critical buckling load and a decrease in the maximum deflection of the sandwich beam.

  • Third order shear deformation theory is used to evaluate electro-elastic solution of a sandwich plate with considering functionally graded (FG) core and composite face sheets made of piezoelectric layers. The plate is resting on the Pasternak foundation and subjected to normal pressure. Short circuited condition is applied on the top and bottom of piezoelectric layers. The governing differential equations of the system can be derived using Hamilton's principle and Maxwell's equation. The Navier's type solution for a sandwich rectangular thick plate with all edges simply supported is used. The numerical results are presented in terms of varying the parameters of the problem such as two elastic foundation parameters, thickness ratio ($h_p/2h$), and power law index on the dimensionless deflection, critical buckling load, electric potential function, and the natural frequency of sandwich rectangular thick plate. The results show that the dimensionless natural frequency and critical buckling load diminish with an increase in the power law index, and vice versa for dimensionless deflection and electrical potential function, because of the sandwich thick plate with considering FG core becomes more flexible; while these results are reverse for thickness ratio.

  • This paper reports the simulation results of piezoelectric microspeakers due to structural changes(diaphragm materials, corrugation width and electrode shapes). When we compared the dependence of diaphragm material properties, the microspeaker with LTO(Low Temperature Oxide) diaphragm shows higher deflection than that of silicon nitride diaphragm, even though the resonant frequencies are almost same in both cases. In case of circular-electrode microspeaker, the deflection of diaphragm is about $16\;{\mu}m$ at 20 V, and it decreases as the corrugation width is decreased. However, the deflection of diaphragm with the square-electrode reveals almost twice times higher value at the same applied voltage than the circular one, and it increases as the corrugation depths are decreased from $30\;{\mu}m\;to\;10\;{\mu}m$. The first resonant frequency of microspeakers present about 1.8 kHz in circular-electrode and 1.2 kHz in square-electrode, respectively.
