  • Considering the mechanical cracking in the concrete lining of tunnels occurring in relatively short period of time after the construction, there is a need for the study on the mechanical behavior and the cracking characteristics of double lining support system(shotcrete and concrete lining). For the proposed study, downscaled lining models of Kyung-Bu High Speed Railway tunnels were tested. Most longitudinal cracks at about 93 percentage developed within 30 arch degree from the vault. Cracking load was about 30 percentage of the failure load and the deflection under the cracking load was 10 percentage of the deflection under the failure load. The overbreak around the vault contributed to the reduction of the capacity for cracking and failure by the percentage greater than the reduced effective depth. Of several rock block types considered in this research, the triangular block was the most critical, and the right triangular block under eccentric load was secondly critical for the stability of the tunnel lining system. The dimensionless support reaction curves were derived from the experimental results for single and double lining. The general equation to compute the designed flexural moment was modified.

  • In this work, a comparative study of multi-objective meta-heuristics (MOMHs) for optimum design of a walking tractor handlebar is conducted in order to reduce the structural mass and increase structural static and dynamic stiffness. The design problem has objective functions as maximising structural natural frequencies, minimising structural mass, bending deflection and torsional deflection with stress constraints. The problem is classified as a many-objective optimisation since there are more than three objectives. Design variables are structural shape and size. Several well established multi-objective optimisers are employed to solve the proposed many-objective optimisation problems of the walking tractor handlebar. The results are compared whereas optimum design solutions of the walking tractor handlebar are illustrated.

  • For the stable operation of high speed air spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are net appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high speed spindle composed of carbon fiber epoxy composite shaft and steel flange was designed for maximum critical speed considering minimum static deflection and radial expansion due to bending load and centrifugal force during high speed relation. The stacking angle and the stacking thickness of the composite shaft and the adhesive bonding length of the 7teel flange were selected through vibrational analysis considering static and thermal loads due to temperature rise.

  • This paper presents a sensing system to measure the deflection of a microcantilever in an atomic force microscope. In general, the optical lever method and interferometry are used for the sensing system; however, their size and cost leaves considerable room for improvement. Therefore, we used an optical pickup head whose operating principle is based on the astigmatism of the commercial optical disk drives. The developed sensing system was applied to a laboratory atomic force microscope, and satisfactory results were obtained.

  • This paper introduces optical methods for in-situ measurement of surface temperature and pressure transient in thermal processes having nanosecond time scales. In the temperature measurement, a p -Si thin film whose refractive index is calibrated as a function of temperature is embedded beneath the sample surface and the photothermal reflectance is monitored for estimating the surface temperature. The pressure transients are measured using the photoacoustic optical deflection method. The experimental technique is used to analyze the nanosecond laser induced vaporization process that is central to numerous engineering and bio-medical applications. Based on the experimental results, discussions are made on the experimental technique and the physical mechanisms of laser-driven explosive vaporization phenomena.

  • In this paper, forming of fully clamped circular plate by using low velocity impact system has been investigated. This system consists of liquid shock tube and gravity drop hammer. A series of test on mild steel and aluminum alloy plates has been done. The effect of varying both impact load and the plate material on the deflection are described. This paper also presents a simple model to prediction of mid-point deflection of circular plate by using input-output experimental data. In this way, singular value decomposition (SVD) method is used in conjunction with dimensionless number incorporated in such complex process. The results of obtained model have very good agreement with experimental data and it provides a way of studying and understanding the plastic deformation of impact loads.

  • In this paper, the mathematical model of a cut with an inverted flexible beam and a concentrated tip mass was derived. The characteristic equation for calculating the natural frequencies of the cart-beam-mass system was obtained and the motion of the system was analyzed through unconstrained modal analysis. A good positioning response of the cart without excessive vibrational motion of the tip mass could be obtained through numerical simulation using PID controller with the feedback of both the position of the cart and the deflection of the beam.

  • For application to drag-based propulsion system, the dynamics of a segmented structure with multiple hinges undergoing oscillatory motion are investigated. The side flaps are connected to a centre rod with elastic plates acting as hinges. The hinges bend to only one direction so that the structure behave asymmetrically between the power stroke and the recovery stroke. An analytical model is proposed, which estimates the asymmetric deformation of the segmented structure coupled with hinges. Using the proposed model, the effects of key geometric and kinematic parameters on the dynamics of the structure are analyzed.

  • The thickness and deflection of melting parts of the glass edge reach the biggest effect on the intensity and thermal insulation performance. During the sealing process using a hydrogen mixed gas torch, the thickness and the deflection effect of the edge part are affected by process parameters. In order to analyze the correlative relationship of the thickness prediction and the deflection of the edge part according to the process parameters, data was obtained by conducting sealing experiments. The main effects and interaction effects of process parameters for the thickness and the shape of the glass edge parts were analyzed through the design of experiment. A mathematical experiment equation that can predict the thickness and deflection of the edge part according to the process parameters was developed by conducting multiple regression equations.

  • This paper presents methods to reduce the deflection of the battery-supporting structure on on-line electric vehicles (OLEVs). First, by testing various battery locations, a location is found that increases the dynamic stiffness of the OLEV. Second, static analysis is conducted to analyze the maximum deflection caused by the battery weight. In order to reduce the amount of deflection, the contributions of the battery-supporting structures are analyzed, and reinforcements are inserted. Then, another static analysis is conducted to compare the results of the base model and modified model. Consequently, through the static analysis, both the base model and modified model are similarly improved in terms of deflection, but the modified model is better than the base model at reducing the mass.
