The rigid body inertia properties of a structure including the mass, the center of gravity location, the mass moments and principal axes of inertia are required for structural dynamic analysis, modeling of mechanical systems, design of mechanisms and optimization. The analytical approaches such as solid or finite element modeling can not be used efficiently for estimating the rigid body inertia properties of complex structures. Several experimental approaches have been developed to determine the rigid body inertia properties of a structure via Frequency Response Functions (FRFs). In the present work two experimental methods are used to estimate the rigid body inertia properties of a frame. The first approach consists of using the amount of mass as input to estimate the other inertia properties of frame. In the second approach, the property of orthogonality of modes is used to derive the inertia properties of a frame. The accuracy of the estimated parameters is evaluated through the comparison of the experimental results with those of the theoretical Solid Work model of frame. Moreover, a thorough discussion about the effect of accuracy of measured FRFs on the estimation of inertia properties is presented.
This study presents an online estimation of an excavator's rotational inertia by using recursive least square with forgetting. It is difficult to measure rotational inertia in real systems. Against this background, online estimation of rotational inertia is essential for improving safety and automation of construction equipment such as excavators because changes in inertial parameter impact dynamic characteristics. Regarding an excavator, rotational inertia for swing motion may change significantly according to working posture and digging conditions. Hence, rotational inertia estimation by predicting swing motion is critical for enhancing working safety and automation. Swing velocity and damping coefficient were used for rotational inertia estimation in this study. Updating rules are proposed for enhancing convergence performance by using the damping coefficient and forgetting factors. The proposed estimation algorithm uses three forgetting factors to estimate time-varying rotational inertia, damping coefficient, and torque with different variation rates. Rotational inertia in a typical working scenario was considered for reasonable performance evaluation. Three simulations were conducted by considering several digging conditions. Presented estimation results reveal the proposed estimation scheme is effective for estimating varying rotational inertia of the excavator.
In general, the information of inertia properties is required to control a spacecraft. The inertia properties are changed by some activities such as consumption of propellant, deployment of solar panel, sloshing, etc. Extensive estimation methods have been investigated to obtain the precise inertia properties. The gyro-based attitude data including noise and bias needs to be compensated for improvement of attitude control accuracy. A modified estimation method based on the law of conservation of angular momentum is suggested to avoid inconvenience like filtering process for noise-effect compensation. The conventional method is modified and beforehand estimated moment of inertia is applied to improve estimation efficiency of product of inertia. The performance of the suggested method has been verified for the case of STSAT-3, Korea Science Technology Satellite.
It was demonstrated earlier that for laminar, isothermal flow of the lubricant in long journal bearings, inertia has negligible effect on the load carrying capacity and influences only the stability characteristics of the bearing. The question in the present paper is: 'will these conclusions of the isothermal theory remain valid in the presence of significant dissipation, or will lubricant inertia and dissipation interact non-linearly to bring about qualitative changes in bearing performance\ulcorner' The results obtained here assert that the effect of lubricant inertia on load carrying capacity remains negligible, irrespective of the rate of dissipation. The stability of the bearing is, however, affected by lubricant inertia. These results, although obtained here for long bearings with Sommerfeld and Gumbel boundary conditions, are believed to be applicable to practical bearing operations and affirm that bearing load may be calculated from classical, i. e., non-inertial theory.
This paper presents models for the dynamic simulation of a regenerative gas turbine and describes dynamic behaviors of a small regenerative engine. A quasi-steady model is introduced where the inertia of the working fluid is assumed to be negligible compared with the mechanical inertia of the rotating shaft. Based on this quasi-steady model, the transient model for the heat exchanger is employed to simulate the unsteady heat exchange in the recuperator. The effect of the thermal inertia of the recuperator metal on transient behaviors is analyzed by comparing the predicted results of the transient and steady state heat exchanger models. For several load change modes such as sudden increase, decrease and periodic variation, engine dynamic characteristics are investigated by applying a fuel control logic for the constant shaft speed. It is found that the thermal inertia of the recuperator metal has a dominant effect on the whole engine dynamic behavior.
This Paper describes the dynamic load simulator for high-speed elevator system, which can emulate 3-mass system as well as equivalent 1-mass system. In order to implement the equivalent inertia of entire elevator system the conventional simulators have generally utilized the mechanical inertia(flywheel) with large radius, which makes the entire system large and heavy. In addition, the mechanical inertia should be replaced each time in order to est another elevator system. In this paper, the dynamic load simulation methods using electrical inertia are Presented so hat the volume and weight of simulator system are greatly reduced and the adjustment of inertia value can be achieved easily by software. Experimental results show the feasibility of this simulator system.
Hydraulic mounts show strong1y frequency-dependent stiffness and damping characteristics in low frequency range, which result from so called inertia track dynamics. A lumped mass has been incorporated in several mechanical models of the literature to take the inertia effect of the fluid in the track into consideration. Although complex s%illness by the mechanical model showed good agreements with the measured values, there exists a critical pitfall. In this paper, the shortcomings of mechanical models with lumped mass for hydraulic founts are clearly identified by illustrating actual measurements of the stiffness parameters for a hydraulic mount. It is conclusively discussed that the inertia effect of the fluid flow through the circular track is significant but latent. As an alternative to the mechanical model, a hydraulic model is claimed to be used for further dynamic analysis of engine/mount system or whole car system.
The purpose of this paper is the improvement of the speed control characteristics of induction machines suited the low resolution incremental-type encoder in a low speed region. In order to improve the control characteristics in a low speed range, we propose that the instantaneous speed control method by the instantaneous speed detection which is implemented by the disturbance torque observer. Also, in case of the speed control by the instantaneous speed detection, the simple estimation method of the mechanical inertia moment is proposed. We will the carry out the mathematical verification of the proposed theory by the theoretic advisement connected with the convergence relationship of the estimated inertia moment to the real mechanical inertia moment. Computer simulations and experiments by the IGBT inverter adopting DSP is performed to verify the proposed method.
