  • The ultrasonic velocity and dynamic MOE of acetylated bamboos were investigated using PUNDIT, a transit time measuring device for longitudinal ultrasonic propagation. Bamboo specimens were boiled in acetic anhydride for 2, 4 and 6 hours, and the maximum average WPG (Weight Percentage Gain) of 19% was obtained at 6 hours. The volumes of acetylated bamboos increase with boiling time and WPG, while as WPG increases their oven-dry densities generally increase with a concave around 5% WPG. This oven-dry density pattern likely influences the trends of ultrasonic velocity and dynamic MOE. which generally decrease with a convex around 5% WPG. It is postulated that during boiling extractives in a bamboo move and aggregate at its surfaces transiently, resulting in the increase of ultrasonic velocity and dynamic MOE. To explain the fact that ultrasonic velocity varies with WPG a simple model was proposed and some ultrasonic properties of a transmitted wave were examined.

  • Water resistance of three biopolyester films, such as poly-L-lactate (PLA), poly-hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBV), and Ecoflex, and low density polyethylene (LDPE) film was investigated by measuring contact angle of various probe liquids on the films. The properties measured were initial contact angle of water, dynamic change of the water contact angle with time, and the critical surface energy of the films. Water contact angle of the biopolyester films ($57.62-68.76^{\circ}$) was lower than that of LDPE film ($85.19^{\circ}$) indicating biopolyester films are less hydrophobic. The result of dynamic change of water contact angle also showed that the biopolyester films are less water resistant than LDPE film, but much more water resistant than cellulose-based packaging materials. Apparent critical surface energy for the biopolyester films (35.15-38.55 mN/m) was higher than that of LDPE film (28.59 mN/m) indicating LDPE film is more hydrophobic.

  • This paper addresses the prediction of the material property continuities of a microstructure. Prediction was made by measuring the dynamic responses distribution of the fabricated materials used in the microstructures. When these distributional material properties were used in estimating the mechanical performances of microstructures, the differences between the computer simulation and the experimental result of microstructures could be reduced and their reliability design could be made.

  • Developed in this research is a TP (tangible prototyping) system, which consists of two modules; (1) a virtual reality model to evaluate the functions and appearance of the product, and (2) a haptic device to emulate tactile and kinesthetic properties of mechanical dial knobs. As an example, a washing machine is modeled using a commercial CAD system and transformed in VRML and X3D formats. Some dynamic behaviors and kinematic characteristics are programmed using X3D script and Java. Various haptic behaviors of the dial are generated by modulating torque profile according to the rotation angle. A torque profile measuring system is developed to evaluate the behaviors of the haptic dial physically. Haptic sensibility evaluations are accomplished using the TP by semantic differential method.

  • Maxwell-Displacement-Currnt-Measuring Technique(MDCM) is a simple system for displacement current measuring which consist with two electrodes to the electrometer, With this method, the displacement current flow only when the electric flux density change by the displacement of molecules or charge particles of membrance on the water surface. Thus, It is Possible to detect dynamic behavior of molecules of membrane without any electrical contact with molecule membrane. In this paper, We measure surface pressure, displacement current and dipole moment of phospholipid monolayers on the wafer surface with applied pressure by MDCM and We measured DTA(differential thermal analysis).

  • An in-hole seismic tests, which has been developed for measuring dynamic properties of soils and rock mass, is a bore hole seismic method that has cost effectiveness and practicality. The upgraded features include the motorized triggering system rather than the manual prototype version in the previous studies and a damper between source and receiver in the module. The performance of the probe has been verified through extensive cross-hole tests and in-hole tests at various sites. The dynamic stiffness of subsurface materials and rock mass have been evaluated and recently, the measurement of shear wave velocity was successfully adopted at horizontal holes of tunnel-face to install explosives. So the application of in-hole seismic test for various soil materials was certified.

  • In this research, the application of ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test as a nondestructive method for estimating some of the mechanical and dynamic properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC) containing steel and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, as well as their combination was explored. In doing so, ten different mix designs were prepared in 19 experimental groups of specimens containing three different volume contents of steel fibers (i.e., 1, 2, and 3 %) and PVA fibers (i.e., 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 %), as well as hybrid fibers (i.e., 0.25-0.75, 0.5-0.5, and 0.75-0.25 %). The specimens in these groups were prepared under the two curing regimes of normal and heat treatment. Moreover, the UPV test results were employed to estimate the compressive strength, dynamic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio of the RPC concrete and to investigate the quality level of the used concrete. At the end, the effect of the specimen shape and in fact the measuring distance length on the UPV results was explored. The results of this research suggest that the steel fiber-containing RPC specimens demonstrate the highest level of ultrasonic pulse velocity as well as the highest values of the mechanical and dynamic properties. Moreover, heat treatment has a positive effect on the density, UPV, dynamic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and compressive strength of the RPC specimens, whereas it leads to a negligible increase or decrease in the shear modulus and static modulus of elasticity. Furthermore, the specimen shape affects the UPV of fiber-lacking specimens while negligibly affecting that of fiber-reinforced specimens.

  • Kinetic friction coefficient, bulk density, dynamic and static angle of repose, and terminal velocity of rice husk at the moisture range 7 to $23\%$ w.b. were determined. It could lead to better design and operation of the processing machinery and handling facilities. Friction coefficient was determined from the horizontal traction force measured by pulling the container holding a mass of rice husk on various plate materials. Dynamic angle of repose was calculated from the photos of bulk samples piled by gravity flow on a circular platform. Static angle of repose was determined by measuring the side angle of the bulk material which was left in a cylindrical container after natural discharge of the bulk sample through a circular hole in the bottom plate. Kinetic friction coefficients of rice husk were in the range of $0.254\~0.410,\;0.205\~0.520,\;0.229\~0.400,\;and 0.133\~0.420$ on PVC, mild steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel, respectively. Bulk density, dynamic and static angle of repose, and terminal velocity were in the range of $91.7\~98.3$ $kg/m^3$, $40.2\~47.6^{\circ},\;52.8\~83.7^{\circ},$ and $1.36\~1.73$ m/s, respectively. These physical properties of rice husk increased linearly as the moisture content increased.
