  • In this study, the method to measure effectively the ground surface displacement of slope was proposed using the Laser Distance Measurer (LDM). Applying the proposed technique is more simple and easier than the complicated and high-priced instrument to measure the ground surface displacement. LDM is an instrument that the red laser aimed at the target and then the reflected laser used for calculating the distance. The advantages of LDM are easy operating method, high measurement precision and lower in price. To check the feasibility, the proposed method applied to the real site that the ground surface displacement of slope was occurred continuously. The ground surface displacements were occurred in various points of the natural and cut slopes located at the lower part of coal mine waste heap due to the load of waste heap. To measure directly the ground surface displacement in this site, 6 measurement sections and 26 measurement points were selected. As the result of the displacement measured by the proposed technique within a certain period time, the accumulative ground surface displacement could be measured as well as the velocity of displacement could be estimated. Also, the progress direction of ground surface displacement can be confirmed and predicted through the analysis of all measured result.

  • The magnetic levitation system has great advantages, such as little friction, no lubrication, no noise and so on. But the magnetic levitation system need a stabilizing controller because it is a unstable, system in natural and it need a sensor for displacement measurement to control the system. In this paper, we proposed a sensorless method to measure the gap between the magnetic pole and the levitated object with application the inductance characteristic which vary according to gap. We made a driving circuit which supply simultaneously the control input PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) signal and the carrier PWM signal to estimate the gap. Because the inductance is a function of gap, and the current of the carrier signal is a function of the inductance, we could estimate the gap from the measurement of the current of the carrier signal. Finally, we investigated the validity of the proposed method through the experimental results.

  • Vibration measurement of rotating shafts by installing sensors such as accelerometers or displacement sensors is costly and dangerous in some cases. As an alternative method, vibration measurement using camera images has been researched because sensor installation is not needed and displacement of a rotating shaft can be directly evaluated. This paper also suggests the enhanced technique applicable to the measurement of vibration of a large-scale rotating shaft. The concurrent methods based on camera images use marks, which are hardly applicable to rotating shafts. The proposed method measures vibration without any marks by evaluating shape errors. The working principle of the method is described and verified by a series of experiments.

  • This paper presents a tracking filter with ship's motion compensation for a ship-borne radar tracking system. The ship's maneuver is described by displacement and rotational motions in the ship-centered east-north frame. The first order Taylor series approximation of the measurement error covariance of the converted measurement is derived in the ship-centered east-north frame. The ship's maneuver is compensated by incorporating the measurement error covariance of the converted measurement and displacement of the position state in the tracking filter. The simulation results via 500 Monte-Carlo runs show that the proposed method follows the target successfully and provides consistent tracking performance during ship's maneuvers while the conventional tracking filter without ship motion compensation fails to track during such periods.

  • It is very important to measure the displacement of a structure to evaluate the safety of the structure. This study shows a methodology to measure the displacement to determine the stability of a structure when it is damaged by loads. The methodology used Moiré's phenomenon and was verified through experiments. The experiments utilized pipes to simulate the pipe supports in the construction site and measured the vertical displacement of the Moiré interference patterns according to the horizontal displacement of the pipes. Experiments confirmed that the linear relationship between horizontal displacement of pipes and vertical displacement of Moiré patterns and derive a relational expression. In conclusion, the methodology presented in this work allows us to simultaneously measure a number of vertical members' displacements regardless of distance and determine the safety of the structure.

  • Together with the wall stiffness, a berm has the role of deciding the stability of a temporary retaining wall before structure installation after excavation. Especially in case of loose or soft soil excavated ground, the role of berm is very important. In this study, the measurement data obtained from the temporary retaining wall in the bermed excavation site in urban and numerical analysis are used to investigate the effects of berm's dimension (width and slope), excavation depth and ground property on the maximum horizontal displacement of the temporary retaining wall. The measurement data indicated that the wall displacement varied to the berm's width. That is, as the berm width decreased, the wall displacement increased. As a result of numerical analyses, the maximum wall displacement increased as slope increased and berm width decreased. This means that the berm is effectively restrained to the wall displacement. As excavation depth increased, the effect of berm's slope and width increased. In case of the same berm condition, the wall displacement restrained as ground property increased.

  • In this study, a 3D coordinate measurement system equipped with a laser displacement meter for digitizing rock joint surface was established and the digitized data were used to calculate several roughness parameters. The parameters used in this study were micro avenge inclination $angle(i_{ave})$, average slope of joint $asperity(SL_{ ave})$, root mean square of $i-angle(i_{rms})$, standard deviation of height(SDH), standard deviation of $i-angle(SD_i)$, roughness profile $index(R_P)$, and fractal dimension(D). The relationships between the roughness parameters based on the digitzation of the surface profile were analyzed. Since the measured value varied according to the degree of reflection and the variation of colors at the measuring point, rock joint surface was painted in white to minimize the influence of the surface conditions. The comparison of the measured values and roughness parameters before and after painting revealed the better consequence from measurement on the painted surfaces. Also, effect of measuring interval was studied. As measured interval was increased, roughness parameters were exponentially decreased. The incremental sequence of degree of decrease was $SDH\; i_{ave},\; i_{rms},\; SD_i,\;and\; R_ p-1$. As a result of comparison of parameters from pin-type measurement system and laser type measurement system, all value of parameters were higher when laser-type measurement system was used, except SDH.

  • Structural health monitoring is concerned with the safety and serviceability of the users of structures, especially for the case of building structures and infrastructures. When considering the safety of a structure, the maximum stress in a member due to live load, earthquake, wind, or other unexpected loadings must be checked not to exceed the stress specified in a code. It will not fail at yield, excessively large displacements will deteriorate the serviceability of a structure. To guarantee the safety and serviceability of structures, the maximum displacement in a structures must be monitored because actual displacement is a direct assessment index on its stiffness. However, no practical method has been reported to monitor the displacement, especially for the case of displacement of high-rise buildings because of not to easy accessive. In this paper, it is studied displacement measuring method of high-rise buildings using LiDAR The method is evaluated by analyzing accuracy of measured displacements for existing building.

  • In this study, a method to estimate the suspension bridge deflection is developed using mode decomposition technique. In order to examine the suspension bridge stability against these dynamic loadings, the prediction of displacement response is very important to evaluate bridge stability. However, it is recognized that any measurement of movement for suspension bridges may be difficult for the absence of proper methods to measure the displacement response on site. This study aims at suggesting a method to estimate the displacement response from the measured strain signals in an indirect way to predict the displacement response, not a direct way to measure the displacement response. Additionally, by applying the FBG sensors with multi-point measurements not influenced by electric noise, it can be expected that the technique would be applicable to infrastructures.

  • The slope design of an open-pit mine must ensure slope stability and economic feasibility. The overall slope angle of the pit is therefore the main factor of concern because of limited support or reinforcement options available in such a setting. This study examines the optimal measurement system for monitoring the behavior of the slope in an open-pit mine using displacement measurement, data analysis, and numerical simulations for a coal mine at Pasir, Indonesia. The area of slope to be managed is extensive and the maximum displacement, as calculated by numerical analysis, is about 3,000 mm. The displacement data, measured by inclinometer and GPS, were analyzed, and the applicability of SSR (slope stability radar) was reviewed in comparison with other monitoring systems.
