  • Displacement of tunnel face is important issues for the evaluation of tunnel safety. In this study, conventional convergence and displacement data measured from horizontal inclinometer were analyzed to investigate the trend and characteristics of tunnel deformation during construction. Trend of measured displacement agreed with general understanding of tunnel deformation prior to excavation. It shows that displacement measured from horizontal inclinometer can be used to preestimate the total deformation of tunnel.

  • Urban tunnelling need to consider not only the stability of tunnel itself but also the ground movement regarding adjacent structures. This paper present 3-D behavior of adjacent structures due to tunnelling induced ground movements by means of field measuring data and nonlinear FEM tunnel analysis. The results of the analytical methods from Mohr-Coulomb model are compared with the site measurement data obtained during the twin tunnel construction. It was found that the location and stiffness of the structure influence greatly the shape and pattern of settlement trough. The settlement trough for Greenfield condition was different from the trough for existing adjacent structures. Therefore the load and stiffness of adjacent structures should be taken into account for the stability analysis of the structures.

  • A tunnel behavior predicted in the investigation and design stage is often different from its actual behavior due to mainly the complexity of ground conditions. In a tunnel construction, therefore, it is necessary to ensure the stability of the tunnel by predicting the behaviors of the ground and the supports through observations and measurements, and modifying immediately excavation and reinforcing methods when necessary. To do so, it is important to be able to predict the final tunnel behavior based on the initial tunnel behavior as early as possible. In this study, the correlations were obtained between the initial and the final convergence by analyzing statistically the convergence measurement data, collected from two domestic road tunnels under construction using NATM. In order to estimate the unknown displacements, occurred during the period between the excavation and the first measurement, two methods were used - one is the method by means of regression analysis using a modified exponential function and the other the method by a simple linear regression analysis using the data measured within the distance from tunnel face equal to the tunnel diameter (D). Finally, the relationships were obtained between the initial and final convergence, including the non-measured displacements estimated from the two different methods, by performing linear regression analyses. The regression analysis results showed that there are clear linear relationships between the initial and final convegence and the difference between the two linear regression equations was not that large for when using the exponential function and the simple linear function to estimate the non-measured displacements.

  • An investigation of the tunnel face, as well as related measurement data collected during tunneling, is necessary for rock classification and to determine tunnel stability and the cost efficiency of tunneling. However, systematic management and efficient use of such data have yet to be successfully implemented domestically, and the number of experts in this field in Korea is limited. Thus, measures to develop and implement systematic management and effective use of data and expertise are urgently needed. This study aimed to develop measures to efficiently provide online tunnel design and construction data using a building information model (BIM)-based data visualization approach, based on an integrated 3D tunnel model generation module and a web viewer module. The development technology was verified through ○○ tunnel design and construction. Directions for future study and system improvement are proposed.

  • In case of a fire in road or railway tunnel it is always necessary to keep the escape condition as good as possible. Most of the victims of major fires in tunnels are because they couldn't leave the tunnel in time and were trapped by smoke, or rescue teams couldn't reach the place of the accident due to low visibility and high temperature. In spring 2003 a comprehensive field experiment was undertaken in a large scaled tunnel in Youngin City to test the effectiveness of a new water spray curtain system, designed to the air qualify inside of a tunnel in case of fire during passenger's escape to safe routes, In order to control the smoke propagation, fixed water sprayed nozzles were used to make water curtain system, which can be installed or hanging water piping line below ceiling. The experiment was accompanied by an extensive measurement campaign in order to measure temperature dropping effect and flow conditions as well as CO concentration for various water sprayed curtains produced by sprinkler heads or water spray nozzle. Eventually comparison analysis were undertaken to investigate the performance of water curtains under fixed water pressure. Therefore most effective water curtain system was presented on the basis of water droplet size in long tunnel.

  • Direct back analysis software is coded based on Simplex method using FLAC as a subroutine. For the verification of the software, 12 different cases are assumed combining various displacements in different measuring locations around a tunnel. The number of displacements for cases varies from 3 to 240. It is verified that the exact elasticity and the primary stress state of rock around a tunnel could be found through iterative calculation regardless of the locations and number of displacements and initial values needed for the direct back analysis.

  • Field measurements were carried out in this study to investigate the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as the distribution and the magnitude of the earth pressure during back fill process. Three kinds of measuring instruments, such as the earth pressure load cell, the concrete strain gauge and the reinforcing bar meter of embedded type in concrete structure were installed and measured. Earth pressure load cells measured the outside forces acting on the tunnel lining with radial directions. Three load cells were installed at the crown, the right and the left shoulder of the tunnel, respectively. Three sets of reinforcing bar meter were installed in the double reinforcements of the tunnel lining and their locations were the same with the position of the earth pressure load cells. Concrete strain gauge was installed only one site of the upper compressive part at the tunnel crown. Based on the measurements, the deformation and the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining were investigated with the back fill process. Considerations on the validity of the field measurements were paid.

  • Measurement of convergence was/is carried out manually throughout the world for tunnels under construction. However, manual method has certain limitations in terms of applicability for the tunnels in operation. This paper describes state of the art of convergence monitoring systems which are available for measuring displacement of existing tunnels. These technologies are analyzed as follows: 1 The Sofo system using the fiber optic sensors has been applied to the stress measurement of the tunnel lining. It has not yet been used for the monitoring of tunnel convergence because of its cost and reliability 2. A TPMS(Tunnel Profile Monitoring System) using tilt sensors and displacement sensors is used for the convergence monitoring of highway tunnels, subway tunnels and underground ducts. 3. A BCS(Bassett Convergence System) using a pair of tilt sensors can be used for the convergence monitoring of tunnels, however the accuracy of the measurement has to be improved because it uses AC input voltage during data acquisition. The system has to be validated before it can be applied to the tunnels in operation. Convergence monitoring systems using TPMS and/or BCS are recommended to be evaluated and improved by a series or tests in tunnels under construction in order to be applied to the main measuring section and the tunnels in operation.

  • This study estimates the degree of influence of factors influencing ground surface settlement during tunnel excavation using Shield tunneling trough 3D FE-analyses. Numerical analysis was carried out by considering face pressure, skinplate pressure, excavation length, soil model, element size and soil material properties. Also, Actually constructed shield TBM comparative analysis was conducted by compared with Volume loss model, Pressure model and field measurement data. Skinplate pressure and soil model were the most influential factors, and the analysis results were similar to field measurements when the appropriate skinplate pressure was applied according to the passing stratum.
