  • Although scholarly terminology should have clear meanings as signs, Korean pagoda terminology has become jargon and is creating difficulties in communicating meanings which are far from the originally intended meanings; this terminology is sometimes notated in dead language, meaning old Chinese characters, or Japanese styled Chinese characters. Nobody has asked questions on the terminology itself which has long been commonly used for a century, since the Japanese-ruling period. One of the main reasons for this error is that the Indian Buddhist scriptures in Sanskrit has been translated into Chinese with vague understanding of form and meaning of stupa since 3rd Century A.D. On the other hand, the English-language terminology, already built by Indology scholars since the beginning of the 20th century, consists of easier language and clearer meanings. This paper examines misunderstanding and mistranslation of the original Indian stupa terms and suggests new terminology in current, easier language.

  • Using semiotic analysis, visual images in selected postmodern fashion advertisements were analyzed. Semiotics is the study of the structure of the meanings of signs. Semiotic analysis involves deconstruction, and thus draws on the researcher’s value-mediated introspection and subjective interpretation of texts i.e., ads). Through deconstruction, culturally assigned meanings, which represent consumers and culture, were revealed. Postmodern characteristics including open interpretation, use of the human body as an object, multi page format, new mood, black and white scenes, use of real people, and new ideology were identified in the ads. The importance of analyzing visual images in fashion ads was stressed in the findings of the study, as was the importance of educating consumers on how to read the visual images.

  • Mathematics is constructed by many signs, and learning mathematics involves the understanding and uses of them. This study reflects mathematical signs and their meanings, and considers how they can be introduced in learning. For these, we first investigated epistemological positions as Piaget, Vygotsky, anthropology, and interactionism. And we investigated semiotic models that Saussure and Peirce built each. Among these we adopted Peirce' triadic model that is consisted of interpretant, object (referent), and represen tamen(sign). In mathematic learning process, representations are transformed by translations and meanings are growed to the representation of another sign. And the meaning of sign grows by learner's interpretation. In terms of theoretical grounds, we settled that the understanding of mathematical signs involved the understanding of their representations and their meanings. On the foundation of above contents, we searched how we introduced signs to students and there were methods that approached to students representationally or inquiringly.

  • Previous research on syntactic processing shows that the interpretation of a syntactically ambiguous sentence is frequently strongly biased towards one meaning over another. The current study investigated the effect of bias strength on the production of disambiguating prosody for English ambiguous sentences. In Experiment 1, 40 speakers gave default readings of 18 syntactically ambiguous sentences. Questioning was used to prove intended meanings behind default readings. Intended meanings were treated as interpretation biases when a majority of speakers read a sentence with the same intended meaning. The size of the majority was used to establish bias strength. In Experiment 2, 10 speakers were instructed to use prosody to disambiguate given alternate meanings of the sentences from Experiment 1. The results indicated an effect of bias strength on disambiguating prosody: speakers used temporal juncture cues to reliably disambiguate alternate meanings for sentences with a weak interpretation bias, but not for those with a strong bias. Overall, the results indicated that interpretation biases strongly affect the production of prosody.

Research methods to achieve this purpose are review of literature and the Questionnaire survey. The major results of this study are as follows; First, The interpretation of the modern meanings of the traditional motives were mainly affected by 'the forms and shapes of the motives rather than 'the meanings and symbols of the motives'. Second, many people felt friendly, preferable to use the motives in modern design, decorative and good-meaningful about the motives. Through this results related to the attitudes of the motives, each motive should be developed by new design and needed the modification.; Especially, 'flower-shape', '亞-shape', '正-shape', '喜-shape'were good motives to use in modem exterior and interior design.

  • This study aims to investigate understanding of meanings of division, quotitive division and partitive division, by the third graders and preservice elementary teachers. To do this, we analysed and compared mathematics textbooks according to 9 mathematics curricula, gathered information about their understanding by questionnaire method targeting 5 third graders and 36 preservice elementary teachers, and analysed their responses in relation to recognition of division-based situations, solution using visual representations, and awareness of quotitive division and partitive division. In Korea, meanings of division have been taught in grade 2 or 3 in various ways according to curricula. In particular, the mathematics textbook of present curriculum shows a couple of radical changes in relation to introduction of division. We raised the necessity of reexamination of these changes, based on our results from questionnaire analysis that show lack of understanding about two meanings of division by the preservice elementary teachers as well as the third graders. And we also induced several didactical implications for teaching meanings of division.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze objectively customers' connotative meanings dependent on show window display types in optical shops. Methods: This survey was conducted on optometry students in Seoul in their 20's. We collected examples of the show window displays in Korean optical shops and deduced their representative types. After drawing out connotative meanings by the semantic differential method, we determined the connotative meanings correspondent to each show window display types by using a questionnaire and statisticl analyses. Results: Respondents chose 'clean and simple', 'luxury and simple', and 'folksy and practical' as connotative meanings of open-type, small amount-type, mass amount-type and commercial-type show window displays, respectively. Conclusions: Analyzing induced connotative meanings and correspondents' preference, we think that the small amount-type show window is the most appropriate display for college students consumer group.
