In this paper, several different fracture criteria using the Eftis and Subramanian's stress solutions [1] are compared with the printed experimental results under different loading conditions. The analytical results of using the solution with non-singular term show better than without non-singular in comparison with the experimental data. And maximum tangential stress criterion (MTS) and maximum tangential strain energy density criterion (MTSE) can get useful results for several loading conditions.
The fatigue crack growth under mixed mode condition has been discussed within the scope of linear fracture mechanics such as maximum tangential stress, maximum tangential principal stress and minimum strain energy density. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of fatigue test crack growth in 304 stainless steel under mixed node. The fatigue test results carried out by using inclined pre-crack specimens was compared to both of the theoretical predictions of the criteria, maximum tangential stress and stain energy density. As difference from theoretical analysis, the transition region from mixed mode to mode I appeared in the fatigue test. There is deep relationship between the angle of slanted pre-crack and transition. Therefore, as applying the different stress intensity factor to each node I+II and mode I, the directions and rates of fatigue crack growth are evaluated more accurately under mixed mode.
Some mixed mode fracture criterion may be converted in to elliptical or ellipsoidal formula with the aid of mathematical translation. Hence, the crack initiation in mixed mode fracture I+II emanating from notches, has been studied using notched circular ring specimens. On the basis of Irwin (1957) theory, a new criteria in mixed mode fracture I+II, based fracture elliptic criterion and notch stress intensity factors has been developed.
The effect of discrete polypropylene fibre reinforcement on shear strength parameters, tensile properties and isotropic index of stabilized compacted residual subgrade was investigated. Composites of compacted subgrade were developed from polypropylene fibre dosage of 0%, 1%, 2.5% and 4% and 3% cement binder. Saturated compacted soil benefited from incremental fibre dosage, the mobilized friction coefficient increased to a maximum at 2.5% fibre dosage from 0.41 to 0.58 and the contribution due to further increase in fibre dosage was marginal. Binder stabilization increased the degree of isotropy for unreinforced soil at lower fibre dosage of 1% and then decreased with higher fibre dosage. Saturation of 3% binder stabilized soil decreased the soil friction angle and the degree of isotropy for both unstabilized and binder stabilized soil increased with fibre dosage. The maximum tensile stress of 3% binder stabilized fibre reinforced residual soil was 3-fold that of 3% binder stabilized unreinforced soil. The difference in computed and measured maximum tensile and tangential stress decreased with increase in fibre dosage and degree of stabilization and polypropylene fibre reinforced soil met local and international criteria for road construction subgrade.
Composite patch repair of cracked aircraft structures has been accepted as one of improving fatigue life and attaining better structural integrity. Analysis for the stress intensity factor at the skin/stiffener structure with inclined central crack repaired by composite stiffened panels are developed. A numerical investigation was conducted to characterize the fracture behavior and crack growth behavior. In order to investigate the crack growth direction, maximum tangential stress(MTS) criteria is used. The main objective of this research is the validation of the inclined crack patching design. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors at the crack-tip and prediction of crack growth direction are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including; composite patch thickness and stiffener distance. The research on cracked structure subjected to mixed mode loading is accomplished and it is evident that more work using different approaches is necessary.
The applications of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on cracks loaded by tensile stresses, and growing under an opening or mode I mechanism. However, many cases of failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loading. Several criteria have been proposed regarding the crack growth direction under mixed mode loadings. This paper is aimed at investigation of fatigue crack growth behaviour under mixed mode(I+II) with variation of angle and pre-crack length in two dimensional branched type precrack. Especially the direction of fatigue crack propagation was predicted and effective stress intensity factor was calculated by finite element analysis(FEA. In this paper, the maximum tangential stress(MTS) criterion was used to predict crack growth direction. Not only experiment but also finite element analysis was carried out and the theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results.

Modelling of a crack propagating through a finite element mesh under mixed mode conditions is of prime importance in fracture mechanics. In this paper, two crack growth criteria and the respective crack paths prediction in functionally graded materials (FGM) are compared. The maximum tangential stress criterion (${\sigma}_{\theta}-criterion$) and the minimum strain energy density criterion (S-criterion) are investigated using advanced finite element technique. Using Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL), the variation continues in the material properties are incorporated into the model by specifying the material parameters at the centroid of each finite element. In this paper, the displacement extrapolation technique (DET) proposed for homogeneous materials is modified and investigated, to obtain the stress intensity factors (SIFs) at crack-tip in FGMs. Several examples are modeled to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the combined procedure. The effect of the defects on the crack propagation in FGMs was highlighted.
