  • We discuss latent factor regression when constructing a common structure inherent among explanatory variables to solve multicollinearity and use them as regressors to construct a linear model of a response variable. Bayesian estimation with LASSO prior of a large penalty parameter to construct a significant factor loading matrix of intrinsic interests among infinite latent structures. The estimated factor loading matrix with estimated other parameters can be inversely transformed into linear parameters of each explanatory variable and used as prediction models for new observations. We apply the proposed method to Product Service Management data of HBAT and observe that the proposed method constructs the same factors of general common factor analysis for the fixed number of factors. The calculated MSE of predicted values of Bayesian latent factor regression model is also smaller than the common factor regression model.

  • Damage detection methods using structural tests can be divided into two methods, i.e., static and dynamic. The static methods which use the stiffness properties of the structure are simpler than the dynamic methods. However, static approaches are very sensitive to the displacement measurement noises and modeling errors. The dynamic methods also have limitations in acquiring the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the high frequencies. In this study, a method for the structural damage assessment using sensitivity matrices is developed, in which the drawbacks of the static and dynamic methods can be compensated. Based on the measurement data for the static displacements and dynamic modal properties, the damage locations and the degree of damage are determined using the presented sensitivity matrix method. The efficiency of the proposed method has been examined through numerical simulation studies on truss type structures.

  • Though steel reinforcing bars are the most widely used tensile reinforcement, corrosion problems are encountered due to the exposure to aggressive environments. As an alternative material to steel, the fiber reinforced polymers have been used as reinforcement in concrete structures. However, bond strength of FRP rebar is relatively low compared to steel rebar. It has been reported that fibers in matrix can resist crack growth, propagation and finally result in an increase of toughness. In this study, high-strength concrete reinforced with structural fibers was produced to enhance interfacial bond behavior between FRP rebar and concrete matrix. The interfacial bond-behaviors were investigated from a direct pullout test. The test variables were surface conditions of GFRP bars and fiber types. Total of 54 pullout specimens with three different types of bars were cast for bond strength tests. The bond strength-slip responses and resistance of the bond failure were evaluated. The test results showed that the bond strength and toughness increased according to the increased fiber volume.

  • The goal of this research is to evaluate landscape-ecological characteristics of watersheds in the Nakdong River Basin by using Geogaphic Information System (GIS) and landscape indices for integation of spatio-temporal informations and multivariate statistical techniques for quantitative analysis of forest landscape. Fragmentation index and change matrix techniques using factor analysis and grid overlay method were used to efficiently analyze and manage huge amount of information for ecological-environmental assessment (land-cover and forest landscape patterns). According to the results based on the pattern analysis of land-cover changes using the change detection matrix between 1980s and 1990s, addition on 750km$^2$ became urbanized areas. The altered 442.04km$^2$ was agricultural areas which is relatively easy for shifting of land-use, and 205.1km$^2$ of forests became urbanized areas, and average elevation and slope of the whole altered areas were 75m and 4$^{\circ}$. On the other hand, 120km$^2$ of urban areas were changed into other areas (i.e., agricultural areas and green space), and fortunately, certain amount of naturalness had been recovered. But still those agricultural areas and fallow areas, which were previously urban areas, had high potential of re-development for urbanization due to their local conditions. According to the structural analysis of forest landscape using the landscape indices, the forest fragmentation of watersheds along the main stream of the Nakdong River was more severe than my other watersheds. Furthermore, the Nakdong-sangju and Nakdong-miryang watersheds had unstable forest structures as well as least amount of forest quantity. Thus, these areas need significant amount of forest through a new forest management policy considering local environmental conditions.

  • In this paper, wavy square absorbers were experimentally and numerically investigated. Numerical simulations were performed with LS-Dyna software on 36 wavy absorbers and their crushing properties were extracted and compared with the simple one. The effect of different parameters, including wave height, wave depth, and wave type; either internal or external on the crushing characteristics were also investigated. To experimentally create corrugation to validate the numerical results, a set of steel mandrel and matrix along with press machines were used. Since the initial specimens were brittle, they were subjected to heat treatment and annealing to gain the required ductility for forming with mandrel and matrix. The annealing of aluminum shells resulted in a 76%increase in ultimate strain and a 60% and 56% decrease in yield and ultimate stresses, respectively. The results showed that with increasing half-wave height in wavy square absorbers, the maximum force was first reduced and then increased. It was also found that in the specimen with constant diameter and half-wave depth, an increment in the half-wave height led to an initial increase in efficiency, followed by a decline. According to the conducted investigations, the lowe maximum force can be observed in the specimen with zero half-wave depth as compared to those having a depth of 1 cm.

  • Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. It has been reported that the strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron was resulted from the good modification of various matrix structures obtained by the heat treatment or addition of alloying elements. This study aims to investigate the effect of various special heat treatment(Cyclic Heat Treatment, Intermediate Heat Treatment, Step Quenching), austempering and alloying element(Ni) on the strength and toughness of ductile cast iron. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows. 1) With addition of Ni, the amount of pearlite or bainite were increased and the morphologies of pearlite or bainite became finer by special heat treatments. 2) As the Ni added and not added ductile cast iron were treated by austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ and $840^{\circ}C$, in the latter the austenite was mostly formed in the vicinity of eutectic cell boundary, but in the former on the whole matrix. 3) In cyclic heat treatment, the volume fraction of pearlite was increased and the shape of pearlite was fined with increase of the number of cycle. 4) The shape of pearlite was mostly bar type in the intermediate heat treatment, but spheroidal type in step quenching. 5) The mechanical properties of ductile cast iron containing 1.5%Ni austempered at $400^{\circ}C$ for 25min. after austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 15min. were a good value of hardness 105(HRB), impact energy 12.5(kg.m), tensile strength 112($kg/mm^2$) and elongation 6.8(%).

  • This study demonstrated the in-situ functionalization with polymers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene-functionalized MWNTs were prepared in an aqueous solution containing styrene monomer, non-ionic surfactant and a cationic coupling agent ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trime-thylammonium chloride (MATMAC)). This process produced an interesting morphology in which the MWNTs, consisting of bead-string shapes or MWNTs embedded in the beads, when polymer beads were sufficiently large, produced nanohybrid material. This morphology was attributed to the interaction between the cationic coupling agent and the nanotube surface which induced polymerization within the hemimicellar or hemicylindrical structures of surfactant micelles on the surface of the nanotubes. In a solution containing MATMAC alone without surfactant, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were not well-dispersed, and in a solution containing only surfactant without MATMAC, polymeric beads were synthesized in isolation from CNTs and continued to exist separately. The incorporation of MATMAC and surfactant together enabled large amounts of CNTs (> 0.05 wt%) to be well-dispersed in water and very effectively encapsulated by polymer chains. This method could be applied to other well-dispersed CNT solutions containing amphiphilic molecules, regardless of the type (i.e., anionic, cationic or nonionic). In this way, the solubility and dispersion of nanotubes could be increased in a solvent or polymer matrix. By enhancing the interfacial adhesion, this method might also contribute to the improved dispersion of nanotubes in a polymer matrix and thus the creation of superior polymer nanocomposites.

  • In this work, pitch-carbonized glass fibers were prepared for reinforcement of composites. The influence of acid functionalization of the fibers on the morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites was investigated. The acid functionalization of the fibers led to 10 and 150% increases in the mechanical and thermal properties, respectively, as compared to carbon fiber-reinforced composites. This can be attributed to the superior orientation of fiber structures and good interfacial interactions between fillers and epoxy matrix, resulting in enhanced degree of dispersion and formation of thermally conductive paths in the functionalized composites.

  • In this paper, the input-output interconnection method of the multiple-valued signal processing circuit using Perfect Shuffle technique and Kronecker product is discussed. Using this method, the circuit design method of the multiple-valued Reed-Muller Expansions (MRME) which can process the multiple-valued signal easily on finite fields GF$(p^m)$ is presented. The proposed input-output interconnection methods show that the matrix transform is an efficient and the structures are modular. The circuits of multiple-valued signal processing of MRME on GF$(p^m)$ design the basic cells to implement the transform and inverse transform matrix of MRME by using two basic gates on GF(3) and interconnect these cells by the input-output interconnection technique of the multiple-valued signal processing circuits. The proposed multiple-valued signal processing circuits that are simple and regular for wire routing and possess the properties of concurrency and modularity are suitable for VLSI.
