The effectiveness of the isolation system installed at the base of the primary structure and at the support of the substructure mounted on the primary structure is evaluated for reducing of structural responses under different earthquakes in this paper. The structural responses are analyzed to identify its behavior due to the input motion characteristics such as various peak acceleration and frequency content. Three analytical models are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the isolation system in this study as follows: fixed-base primary structure with support-fixed substructure, base-isolated primary structure with support-fixed substructure, and fixed-base primary structure with support-isolated substruciure. A computer code (KBISAP) is used for numerical integration of equation of motion considering the interaction between the primary structure and the secondary structure. The matrix condensation technique and constant average acceleration method are utilized in this program. And also, the effective stiffness of the base-isolator on reducing the structural response are evaluated for various earthquakes through the relationship of the acceleration - displacement.
The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.
Purpose: Smad4 is a central mediator for transforming growth factor-${\beta}$/bone morphogenetic protein ($TGF-{\beta}/BMP$) signals, which are involved in regulating cranial neural crest cell formation, migration, proliferation, and fate determination. Accumulated evidences indicate that $TGF-{\beta}/BMP$ signaling plays key roles in the early tooth morphogenesis. However, their roles in the late tooth formation, such as cellular differentiation and matrix formation are not clearly understood. The objective of this study is to understand the roles of Smad4 in vivo during enamel and dentin formation through tissue-specific inactivation of Smad4. Methods: We generated and analyzed mice with dental epithelium-specific inactivation of the Smad4 gene (K14-Cre:$Smad4^{fl/fl}$) and dental mesenchyme-specific inactivation of Smad4 gene (Osr2Ires-Cre:$Smad4^{fl/fl}$). Results: In the tooth germs of K14-Cre:$Smad4^{fl/fl}$, ameloblast differentiation was not detectable in inner enamel epithelial cells, however, dentin-like structure was formed in dental mesenchymal cells. In the tooth germs of Osr2Ires-Cre:$Smad4^{fl/fl}$ mice, ameloblasts were normally differentiated from inner enamel epithelial cells. Interestingly, we found that bone-like structures, with cellular inclusion, were formed in the dentin region of Osr2Ires-Cre:$Smad4^{fl/fl}$ mice. Conclusion: Taken together, our study demonstrates that Smad4 plays a crucial role in regulating ameloblast and odontoblast differentiation, as well as in regulating epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during tooth development.

Abnormal glycosylation can significantly affect the intrinsic functions (i.e., stability and solubility) of proteins and the extrinsic protein interactions with other biomolecules. For example, recombinant glycoprotein therapeutics needs proper glycosylation for optimal drug efficacy. Therefore, there has been a strong demand for rapid, sensitive and high-through-put glycomics tools for real-time monitoring and fast validation of the biotherapeutics glycosylation. Although liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is one of the most powerful tools for the characterization of glycan structures, it is generally time consuming and requires highly skilled personnel to collect the data and analyze the results. Recently, as an alternative method, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), which is a fast, robust and easy-to-use instrumentation, has been used for quantitative glycomics with various chemical derivatization techniques. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in MALDI-MS based quantitative glycan analysis according to the chemical derivatization strategies. Moreover, we address the application of MALDI-MS for high-throughput glycan analysis in many fields of clinical and biochemical engineering.

Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCCs) have electrical conductivity by inserting reinforced conductive fibers into a cementitious matrix. Such characteristic allows us to utilize FRCCs for crack monitoring of a structure by measuring electrical responses without sensor installation. However, the electrical responses are often sensitively altered by temperature variation as well as crack initiation. The temperature variation may disturb crack detection on the measured electrical responses. Moreover, as sensing probes for measuring electrical reponses increase, undesired contact noises are often augmented. In this paper, a self-sensing impedance circuit is specially designed for reducing the number of sensing probes. The crack initiation and temperature variation effects on the self-sensing impedance responses of FRCCs are experimentally investigated using the self-sensing impedance circuit. The experiment results reveal that the electrical impedance response are more sensitively changed due to temperature variation than crack initiation.
To perform the realtime strain and fracture monitoring of the smart composite structures, two optical fiber sensor systems are proposed. The two types of the coherent sources were used for fracture signal detection - EDFA with FBG and EDFA with Fabry-Perot filter. These sources were coupled to EFPI sensors imbedded in composite specimens. To understand the characteristics of matrix crack signals, at first, we performed tensile tests using surface attached PZT sensors by changing the thickness and width of the specimens. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as short time Fourier transform (STFT) and wavelet transform (WT) for the quantitative evaluation of fracture signals. The experimental result shows the distinctive signal features in frequency domain due to the different specimen shapes. And, from the test of tensile load monitoring using optical fiber sensor systems, measured strain agreed with the value of electric strain gage and the fracture detection system could detect the moment of damage with high sensitivity to recognize the onset of micro-crack fracture signal.
This paper reports an experimental study on the damage mechanism and resistance of Type I portland cement mortar and paste samples exposed to 5% sodium sulfate solution with different solution temperatures; namely, $4^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The resistance of mortar samples was evaluated using expansion, compressive strength and flexural strength measurements. Some microstructural observations such as x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy were also introduced to elucidate reactants formed by sulfate attack, especially in a low temperature condition. From the results, it was found that the degree of damage in the mortar samples was significantly associated with the temperature of sulfate solution. Low temperature of the sulfate solution led to the formation of thaumasite in mortar and paste samples, and subsequently a poor resistance to sulfate attack. Thus, it is noted that when concrete structures are exposed to sulfate media in the condition of a cold region or whether, special care should be taken.

The objective of this study was to prepare hydrogel beads which were useful microbial immobilization to remove nitrogen and phosphorous in the industrial wastewater. Two different polyols(PEG, PTMG) terminated with photo-crosslinkable methacrylate groups were synthesized. Structures of the prepolymers and the UV cured hydrogels were characterized by using $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Water content, mechanical strength and pore sizes of the hydrogels having different MW of polyols and different ratios of PEG/PTMG were investigated. Hydrogels prepared from PEG(MW1000) only or the mixture of PEG(MW1000) and PTMG(MW2900) with 7:3 by weight were considered as potential candidates for the matrix for the immobilization of microorganism.

One of the problems for practical use of fiber-reinforced plastics is the performance degradation by fatigue damage in the joints. The study is to develop a nondestructive technique for real-time evaluation of adhesively bonded composite-metal joints. From the prior study we confirmed that the bonding strength can be estimated from the correlation between the qualify of bonded parts and AUP's. We obtained a curve showing the correlation between the degree of fatigue damage and AUP's calculated from signals acquired during fatigue loading of single-lap and double-lap joints of CFRP and Al6061. The curve is an analogy to the one showing stiffness reduction ($E/E_o$) of polymer matrix composites by fatigue damage. From those facts, it is plausible to predict the degree of fatigue damage in real-time. Amplitude and AUP2 appeared to be optimal parameters to provide more reliable results for single-lap joints whereas Amplitude and AUP2 did for double-lap joints. It is recommended to select optimal parameters for different geometries in the application for real structures.
In this work, p-type Bi-Sb-Te alloys powders are prepared using gas atomization, a mass production powder preparation method involving rapid solidification. To study the effect of the sintering temperature on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties, gas-atomized powders are consolidated at different temperatures (623, 703, and 743 K) using spark plasma sintering. The crystal structures of the gas-atomized powders and sintered bulks are identified using an X-ray diffraction technique. Texture analysis by electron backscatter diffraction reveals that the grains are randomly oriented in the entire matrix, and no preferred orientation in any unique direction is observed. The hardness values decrease with increasing sintering temperature owing to a decrease in grain size. The conductivity increases gradually with increasing sintering temperature, whereas the Seebeck coefficient decreases owing to increases in the carrier mobility with grain size. The lowest thermal conductivity is obtained for the bulk sintered at a low temperature (603 K), mainly because of its fine-grained microstructure. A peak ZT of 1.06 is achieved for the sample sintered at 703 K owing to its moderate electrical conductivity and sustainable thermal conductivity.
