  • This study proposes an analytic method that determines an optimal arrangement of absorptive materials on an enclosure surface. Under the optimal arrangement, a quiet zone in the enclosure has the minimum $\varepsilon$$\sub$p/ (acoustic potential energy density). The proposed method has been implemented by using a BEM simulation and a genetic algorithm. The BEM simulation evaluates the $\varepsilon$$\sub$p/ under the prescribed arrangement of the absorptive materials. The genetic algorithm searches the optimal arrangement by referring the ep evaluated from the BEM simulation. In the BEM simulation, the absorptive material arrangement is expressed as a vector, which is denoted as in absorptive material arrangement (AMA) vector. Besides, an admittance vector of which elements are admittances of available absorptive materials and an AMA matrix that transforms the admittance vector into the AMA vector are defined. The AMA matrix is also used as a chromosome in the genetic algorithm so that it functions to relate the BEM simulation to the genetic algorithm. As a verification example, the proposed method is applied to make the quiet zone in a parallelepiped enclosure.

  • The symmetry is general geometric design principal in contemporary architecture shape. But, Symmetry sometimes easily causes unreasonable design. In some reason, two of symmetric units in the apartment, one side of unit have very reasonable plan and arrangement but opposite side unit nay not. For example, if the kitchen on right unit had right-handed arrangement, the symmetrical other would have left-handed kitchen arrangement. In addition to this, if each house unit has the same plan but different direction, each unit has different usage or affects the residents' life pattern. Nevertheless, Architects use only one unit plan to design public housing development by using symmetric operator (mirror, proper rotation, inversion center) at their option. This study suggests that using group theory and mathematical matrix rather than designer's discretion can solve this symmetry problem clearly. And, this study analysis the merits and demerits between each symmetrical pair of unit plan shapes by using mathematical point group theory and matrix.

  • It is well known that design matrix X for any factorial design can be represented by a product $X = TX_o$ where T is replication matrix and $X_o$ is the corresponding balanced design matrix. Since $X_o$ consists of regular arrangement of 0's and 1's, we can easily find the spectral decomposition of $X_o',X_o$. Also using this we propose an efficient algorithm for computing the orthogonal projection matrix for a balanced factorial design.

  • A relationship between reader arrangement and DOP is derived from the geometry matrix of the TDOA-based position tracking system. It is shown that the minimum value of the DOP is affected by the number of readers, arrangement of readers and position of the tag. The relationship is verified through computer simulations for two cases of reader arrangement.

  • Application of matrix converter to vector control of induction motor using simplified Venturini algorithm which is capable of achieving the maximum output voltage is developed. This algorithm simplifies the control algorithm and therefor reduces the digital implementation time. Matrix converter is used as voltage-referenced voltage fed vector controlled induction motor drive. This paper describes the performance of vector controlled induction motor with four quadrant capability employing a matrix converter power circuit. The advantage of this system over the conventional rectifier-inverter arrangement are capability for regeneration into the utility, sinusoidal supply currents and minimum passive components. The steady-state and transient performance of the induction motor drive under the vector control technique is demonstrate with simulation and experiment results.

  • The heat transfer and thermal stress analysis was performed on the ceramic core of the matrix-type recuperator. The efficiency was calculated as 34% to 65%. Triple-pass arrangement provided higher preheated air temperatures, lower thermal stresses and the increase of pressure drops. Higher temperature gradients and maximum peak stresses appeared on the corners of the ceramic core. The effect of boundary conditions was significant and the use of spring-load sealing mechanism could release thermal stresses.

  • Some classical plots like scatterplot matrices and parallel coordinates are valuable tools for data visualization. These tools are extensively used in the modern data mining softwares to explore the inherent data structure, and hence to visually classify or cluster the database into appropriate groups. However, the interpretation of these plots are very sensitive to the arrangement of variables. In this work, we introduce two methods to arrange the variables for data visualization. First method is based on the work of Wegman (1999), and this is to arrange the variables using minimum distance among all the pairwise permutation of the variables. Second method is using the idea of principal components. We Investigate the effectiveness of these methods with parallel coordinates using real data sets, and show that each of the two proposed methods has its own strength from different aspects respectively.

  • The type, volume fraction, size, shape and arrangement of embedded particles influence the mechanical properties of the particle reinforced metal matrix composites. This presents the investigation of the SiC particle and porosity distributions in various aluminum matrix composites produced by cold- and hot-pressing. The microstructures were characterized by optical microscopy and stereological parameters. SiC and porosity volume fractions, and the anisotropy distribution function were measured to establish the influence of the consolidation method.

  • The extrusion process for long-length multi-filaments of BSCCO 2223 superconductor tape has been investigated with aids of Finite Element Method and experimental inspection. Since the arrangement of filaments in matrix material has characteristic of rotational symmetry, a 2-dimensional commercial FEM package, DEFORM-2D, was adopted to simulate extrusion process with different variables such as hardness of sheath material, lengths of each filament and arrangement. From the FEM analysis, since the inner filaments move faster than the outer one, distribution of filaments is needed to be optimized. In the case of pure Ag matrix, undesirable non-uniform distribution of filament was obtained due to low hardness of sheath material. Dummy sample(brass (sheath) and talc powder(filament)), however, which has relatively high hardness of sheath material, had been produced with desirable results. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize hardness of sheath material, extrusion temperature and billet design.
