  • In this study, we analyzed how the speed concept has been handled in Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and suggested some didactical implications for revising the teaching of speed concept. To do this, we investigated the curriculum documents, textbooks and teacher's manuals from the first curriculum to the 2009 revision curriculum. The results show that the speed concept of the elementary mathematics in Korea has been based on the concept of average speed and that the approach of applying the value of ratio has been strengthening more than the aspect of proportional relation. So we suggested two didactical suggestions: 1) the teaching of the speed concept should start with uniform movements. 2) the reasoning of proportional relation should be more strengthened.

  • In this study, on the basis of the seventh national mathematics curriculum, the achievement standards were developed to specify the objectives and contents of teaching-learning and the assessment standards were also developed to differentiate students' levels of achievement at school mathematics. The achievement standards were developed on the following guidelines; 1) to present the minimum standards based on the national curriculum, 2) to develop the standards based on the order of curriculum, 3) to suggest the minimum but ultimate achievement target, 4) to comprise not only of the intellectual but also of psychological spheres such as knowledge, function, attitude, aptitude, etc., and 5) to suggest the standards comprehensively and concretely. The standards were developed on the basis of the middle areas of contents of the curriculum in order not to be too comprehensive, nor to be too detailed. Learning activities, on the other hand, were provided for the assistance of instructions with emphasis on creativity rather than on the routine instruction. The assessment standards were established based on the following principles; 1) to establish the assessment methods, contents, and situations which are to be used for assessment, 2) to establish the criteria of classifying the assessed into the upper, intermediate and lower levels, 3) to develop the assessment standards in a proportionate balance to achievement standards, 4) to establish the intermediate level as a standard, and 5) to establish the minimum level in the contents, concepts, values and attitudes of basic learning. This study also suggested the exemplary test items including short-answer and open-ended questions while putting emphasis on students' real performance to increase their ability in solving problems rather than in calculating. In addition to the test items, it introduced the grading system developed to grade the items with concrete guidelines and to report students' achievement on doing mathematics.

  • The College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) is the Korean national university examination based on the national curriculum. The CSAT is a high-stakes test because of powerful social forces which the college admission system has in Korea. This examination has changed many times through not only the national curriculum revision but also various external factors including the normalization of public education, mitigating the burden of students, etc. This study analysis the changes of assessment contents of the Mathematics of the CSAT due to the national curriculum revision. Additionally, this study analysis the mathematics content domains of the college entrance examinations in some foreign countries. Based on the result of this analysis, this study will derive implications for improvement directions of the Mathematics of the CSAT.

  • In the 2015 revised math curriculum, core competencies have been embodied and presented as skills and achievement standards. In this study, I analyzed aspects of the link between competencies, skills and achievement standards in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum for elementary schools. According to the study, six mathematics curriculum competencies were presented evenly as 'skills' in each content area of elementary school, but reflected some of the sub-components of the curriculum, and some of them were presented as 'skills' but not as 'achievement standards'. In addition, the types of skills reflected in the achievement standards varied greatly by content area, but a few of specific skills such as 'understand' were found to be highly emphasized. Based on this, several implications were derived to further improve the implementation of competencies. First, 'skill' should be presented in a more systematic way and with more validity of extraction. Second, the extent to which competencies are presented in the achievement standards should be discussed. Third, Mathematics skills should be presented differently by grade(cluster) in achievement standards, 'Guidelines for Teaching and Learning' and 'Guidelines for Assesment'. Fourth, competencies related to content shall be presented separately and in detail.

  • Criticism has been raised that the way of teaching weights in the 3rd and 4th graders of elementary school is different between the 2015 revised math curriculum and the 2015 revised science curriculum, causing confusion among elementary school teachers and students. This study tried to confirm the social recognition that should be considered in the process of didactic transformation which means transformation from knowledge to used into knowledge to taught and to compare the variations of didactic transformations differently according to didactic intentions. The research analyzes and synthesizes the root of the meaning of weight, weight in the international standard system of units SI, weight implemented in Korean mathematics curriculum and textbooks, Singaporean mathematics curriculum and textbooks, USA mathematics curriculum and textbooks, and Korean science curriculum and textbooks. Through this analysis, a pedagogical perspective on how to define and teach weight in elementary school as knowledge to be taught was derived.

  • This study is on the use of mathematics program for School Mathematics Education. According to the ‘technology principle’ by NCTM and teaching-learning methods by the 7th curriculum, we developed mathematics learning activities with mathematics program. This activity is to construct designs with graphs by using mathematics program(GrafEq.). In this study, we practiced these learning activities with pre-service mathematics teachers. The mathematics educational effects of these learning activities in this study are analyzed as follows; active & spontaneous search for mathematical knowledge, the experience of problem solving, affirmative view-point of mathematics, understanding of practical use of mathematics, acquisition an interest & motivation of learning mathematics etc. When students learn graphs of function, the concept of inequality in secondary school mathematics class., mathematics teachers can make a good use of constructing designs by mathematics program(GrafEq.). This will help to practice of teaching-learning methods by the 7th curriculum.

  • In December of 2009, General Curriculum Revised in 2009 was announced and research on corresponding mathematics curriculum revision has been initiated from that period. Finally, in August 2011, Mathematics Curriculum Revised in 2009 was announced. In this new curriculum, Creativity is emphasized as the ability pursued in General Curriculum Revised in 2009. Accordingly, for the purpose of fostering students with creative and challenging minds, teaching and learning methods including the objectives and content should be more carefully implemented in math class. In case of the area of Probability and Statistics closely related to real life situations, it is suggested that school curriculum in mathematics would not deal with only mathematical problems on algorithm, but rather present teaching and learning materials related to the real life in order to recognize the usefulness of the content of Probability and Statistics and to learn how to think about it. In this paper, effective guidelines for teaching and learning the content of Probability and Statistics and its activities that follows the direction on Mathematics Curriculum Revised in 2009' are suggested based on the analysis of the PISA and TIMSS international assessments items. Thus, the guidelines suggested in this study would be used efficiently and appropriately for developing instructional materials or planning curriculum revision and setting its direction in the future.

  • As the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum emphasizing competency cultivation was announced, the researcher analyzed the connection between competency, content system, and achievement standards in elementary school mathematics curriculum. The results of the analysis of the link between the competency of the curriculum revision research report, its sub-elements, the 'process and skills' of the curriculum content system, and the achievement standard verb are as follows. First, most of the five curriculum competencies (problem solving, reasoning, communication, connection, and information processing) of the mathematics department are implemented as "process-skills" of the content system, which is further specified and presented as an achievement-based verb. Second, the five competencies were not implemented with the same weight in all areas, and the appropriate process-skills were differentiated and presented according to the content of knowledge-understanding by area/grade group. Third, verbs of the achievement standards were more rich than before in the 2022 revised elementary school mathematics curriculum. Fourth, 'understanding' throughout the entire area was still presented as the highest proportion. Through the research results, the researcher discussed clearly establishing the meaning of problem-solving capabilities in the future and developing and presenting "understanding" as a more specific process or skills.
