  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mothers' parenting, children's self-esteem, and stress. The participants were composed of 320 elementary school 5th graders (161 boys and 159 girls) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on mothers' parenting, children's self-esteem, and stress. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that maternal warmth was negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. Children's self-esteem was also negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. in addition maternal warmth was positively correlated with self-esteem in both boys and girls. It was futher found that self-esteem tended to play a partially mediating role between maternal warmth and children's stress only in boys. Self-esteem tended to play a perfectly mediating role between maternal permissiveness/nonintervention and children's stress only in girls. These results indicated that children's self-esteem plays a crucial role in improving the levels of children's stress.

  • This study examined pathways from maternal parenting behavior to adolescents' internet addiction through both self-control and depression/anxiety. Participants were 449 $8^{th}$ and $9^{th}$ graders in Seoul. They completed questionnaires on maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control, depression/anxiety, and internet addiction. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Maternal parenting behavior indirectly influenced adolescents' internet addiction through self-control and depression/anxiety. Self-control and depression/anxiety individually mediated between maternal parenting behavior and internet addition. However, maternal parenting behavior didn't directly affect adolescents' internet addiction. Self-control was influenced by maternal parenting behavior and also played a crucial role in preventing adolescents' internet addiction.

  • The purpose of this study was to firstly, investigate the relationship between infants' communicative gestures, play and maternal responsiveness and secondly, to examine the role of maternal responsiveness in the associations between infants' communicative gestures and play. The subjects comprised 42 infants (21 boys and 21 girls) and their mothers. The infants' communicative gestures, the infants' play and maternal responsiveness were observed during free play sessions lasting 20 minutes. The results are as follows. Mothers of girls showed higher levels of responsiveness than the mothers of boys. In addition, here were positive correlations between infants' communicative gestures, play and maternal responsiveness. Maternal responsiveness was observed to moderate the effects of infants' communicative gestures on the infants' average level of play. These results indicate that it is important for caregivers to interpret infants' communicative intentions appropriately and respond promptly and adequately in play situations.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in the offspring and to examine the mediating role of antepartum health risk on the intergenerational transmission of maternal ACEs. Methods: The participants consisted of 461 mother-child dyads. Mothers completed the ACEs questionnaire and Diagnostic Predictive Scales. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the risk of ADHD symptoms in the offspring of mothers with ACEs and the mediating effect of antepartum health risks by path analysis. Results: In all, 35.4% (n=163) had at least one maternal ACE, and 11.1% (n=51) had three or more. Compared to the non-ADHD symptom group, the group of offspring with ADHD symptoms showed a significant association with maternal ACE score (p<0.001) and antepartum health risks (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis further showed a significant association between the sum of maternal ACEs [odds ratio (OR)=1.264, 95% confidence interval (CI)= 1.060-1.516, p=0.009], antepartum health risks (OR=1.236, 95% CI=1.036-1.475, p=0.019), and ADHD symptoms in the offspring. In the mediation model in which the mother's ACE score affected the offspring's ADHD symptoms, partial mediation through antepartum health risks was found to be significant (B=0.041, 95% CI=0.011-0.124). Conclusion: Maternal ACEs are significantly related to the incidence of ADHD symptoms in the offspring and antepartum health risks exert an indirect effect. These findings suggest that maternal ACEs have a negative impact on the offspring's brain development through intergenerational transmission, resulting in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD.

  • The relations of parental differential treatment perceived by children to their self-esteem were examined. The subjects were 299 fifth-and sixth-grade elementary school children (162 boys and 137 girls) in Seoul. The data were collected using two kinds of questionnaires on maternal and paternal differential treatment and a child’s self-esteem. The major findings are as follows: Firstborns received more differential maternal affection than secondborns, and both boys and firstborns received more differential maternal control than girls and secondborns. Differential paternal control varied as a function of a child’s sex and birth order, in which boys and firstborns received more differential paternal control than girls and secondborns, but differential paternal affection did not vary. Maternal differential treatments were related to self-esteem only in girls, indicating that the more differential maternal affection they perceived, the higher self-esteem they had, and the more differential maternal control they perceived, the lower self-esteem they had. Paternal differential treatments were not related to self-esteem both for boys and girls. The study emphasizes the crucial role of mothers on their daughters.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the maternal role education program for primiparas in mother-infant interaction, childrearing environment, and infant development. Method: A Non-equivalent control group time-series design was used. For the intervention group, programmed parenting education focusing on mother-infant interaction, home environment for infant development, and parent counseling and support was provided via home visits or telephone for twelve months. Result: Significant differences were found in the mother-infant interaction feeding scale at one and three months, but no differences were found in the teaching scale at six and twelve months between the intervention and control groups. Also, the difference in childrearing environment (HOME) between the two groups was significant at three, six, twelve months. In addition, the intervention group showed higher GQ in the Griffiths mental development scale at three and six months. In multiple regression analysis, 22.6% to 43.6% of infant development was explained by HOME, mother-infant interaction, and previous development. Conclusion: The maternal role education program proved to be effective in promoting mother-infant interaction, organizing the childrearing environment, and fostering infant development.

  • The main purpose of this study was to identify the effect of phone counseling carried out to promote the role of the primiperous mothers. The data were collected from march 20 to may 30, 1998. The subjects for the study were the mothers of 60 first bon neonates admitted to and discharged from Sam-sung Medical Center's neonatal ward. Thirty subjects were assigned to the experimental group and thirty to the control group. A measure of maternal identity as well as level of self confidence in taking care of an infant after giving birth was taken. Informational supportive nursing was then provided to the mothers through phone counseling for a total of four times at 2~3 days, 7~8days, 12∼13days and 18∼1days after discharged. The level of self confidence in taking care of an infant was then remeasured. The control group was not provided with supportive nursing through phone counseling instead the level of confidence in taking care of an infant was measured at 3 weeks. Taking previous study documentary evidence into consideration the researcher developed a supportive nursing telephone counseling program that provided both informational and emotional support suitable to primiperous mothers. A semantic differential scale developed according to Osgood and translated and adapted by Koh Hyo-Jung was used as the maternal self identity measurement tool. The tool used to measure self confidence in taking care of infant was the developed by Bak Mi Suk which includes 13 items from Pharis's self confidence scale The data were analyzed using χ²-test, t-test and paired t-test. The result of the study are as follows 1. First hypothesis The level of self confidence in taking care of an infant for the group of primiparas who received phone counseling in the postpartum period would be higher than that of the primiparas who did not receive phone counselling : As the experimental group's level of self confidence in taking care infants was significantly higher than that of the control group this hypothesis is accepted 2. Second hypothesis The level of maternal identity will be higher for the group of primiparas who received phone counseling than that of primiparas who did not received phone counseling As the experimental group's level of maternal identity was significantly higher than that of the control group this hypothesis is accepted In looking at the results of the study as a whole, it can be concluded that emotional and informational nursing support provided through phone counselling is an effective strategy in promoting the role of new mothers.
