The results were as follows; The socio-economic status of home influenced on the parent's achieving pressure, maternal child rearing behavior and children's self-evaluation, but didn't influence children's learned helplessness. Parent's achieving pressure had a negative correlation with the maternal child rearing behavior and influenced children's learned helplessness, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's learned helplessness directly. Children's self-evaluation had the strongest direct impact on children's learned helplessness. This was found to be a mediating factor between home environmental factor and children's learned helplessness.

  • The purpose of this research is to delineate the effects of the material adult attachment and affectionate child-rearing behavior on the social competence of a child. The levels of mother's education and income, as well as the maternal adult attachment and affectionate child-rearing behavior have been chosen for the analysis. The sample subjects selected for the research include 287 pairs of fifth/sixth grade students, their mothers, and eight of the classroom teachers, all from Kwangiu city. The major findings are as follows: First, in measuring the social competence score of a child and the maternal adult attachment, affectionate child-rearing behavior, the scores, in general, tend to be above the mean scores. Second, looking at the correlation between the mother's education/income level and affectionate child-rearing and the child's social competence level, the affectionate child-rearing and the social competence factors only show difference correlating to the mother's education, high school or higher, as opposed to the level of junior high and lower, the difference is significant. Third, the results of multiple regression analysis on the effects of the variables to the child's social competence indicates that affectionate child-rearing is the most significant contributing factor, followed by the mother's education, the close attachment factor, income, and the anxiety attachment factor, in that order All in all, the variables account for 18% of the child's social competence score.

  • This study investigated the relationship among children's sensation seeking, maternal childrearing behavior and children's problem behavior. The subjects were 470 5th and 6th grade elementary school students in Pusan, Korea. Zuckerman's questionnaire on sensation seeking(1994), Park, Young Yae's questionnaire on maternal childrearing behaviors(1995) and Kim Hye Ryun's questionnaire on children's maladjustment behavior(1993) were used. The results were as follows : (1) According to sex, there were significant differences in sensation seeking stores, the aggressive behavior scores and distracted behavior scores. The boys got higher scores than girls in sensation seeking scores, and also in aggressive behavior scores and distracted behavior scores. (2) There were significant positive correlations between sensation seeking scores and the aggressive behavior scores for both boys and girls. And there were significant positive correlations between sensation seeking scores and the distracted behavior scores for both boys and girls. (3) Both sensation seeking and maternal child rearing behavior predicted aggressive behavior and distracted behavior for both boys and girls. For boy's aggressive behavior, sensation seeking and maternal child rearing behavior explained 8%, 8%, respectively. For boy's distracted behavior, sensation seeking explained 5%. And for girl's aggressive behavior, sensation seeking and maternal child rearing behavior explained 27%, 9%, respectively. For girl's distracted behavior, sensation seeking and maternal child rearing behavior explained 28%, 7%, respectively. The sensation seeking variable was the important predictor influencing on children's aggressive behavior and distracted behavior. • The purpose of the study was to investigate the mother-child interactions in terms of maternal child- rearing behavior, maternal self-esteem, and their school-age children's self-esteem. The subjects were, all living in the Seoul area. A pre-test was conducted twice on 98 subjects. Each time the values of Chronbach's ${\alpha}$ were obtained on maternal behavior, maternal self-esteem and children's self-esteem. Data analysis was by ANOVA, Pearson's product-moment correlation. multiple regression analysis. Chronbach's ${\alpha}$, and factor analysis. Children's self-esteem was positively related (1) to family background factors:educational level, employment status of mothers, social economic status, and number of siblings (2) to maternal self-esteem and (3) to maternal child-rearing behavior in the dimensions of affection, acceptance, and encouragement of independency. Children's self-esteem was negatively related to maternal child-rearing behavior in the dimensions of hostility, rejection and encouragement of dependency. The relative importance of independent variables on children's self-esteem was found to be in the following order:mother's educational level. social economic status, and number of siblings (${\beta}=0.5935$, p< .001), maternal child-rearing behavior in the affection-hostility dimension (${\beta}=0.0849$, p< .001), and in the acceptance-rejection dimension(${\beta}=0.0365$, p< .05). The regression model showed that 25 percent of the children's self-esteem could be accounted for by family background factors. and maternal child-rearing behavior in the affection-hostility dimension and the acceptance-rejection dimension ($R^2=0.25$).

  • This study investigated the effects of children's temperament and environmental factors on boys' and girls' noncompliance in ecological context. Observations were made of 62 children(34 boys and 28 girls, $\bar{x}$= 44 months) enrolled in child-care centers. Mothers and caregivers completed questionnaires. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's Correlation, and three way ANOVA. Results showed no significant gender difference in noncompliance. There were correlations between children's activity level, maternal rejection and responsiveness, quantity of child-care and boys' noncompliance. For girls, only activity level and quantity of child-care were related to noncompliance. The effects of maternal child-rearing behavior and child-care variables on noncompliance varied by children's gender and temperament.

  • The main purpose of this study was to assess the effects of SES, mother's psychological well-being, child-rearing behavior and child's peer relationship on school adjustment. A total of 237 children enrolled in the 5th and 6th grade and their mothers were used for this study. Data was collected via questionnaires completed by children and their mothers. The path analysis of antecedent variables influencing child's school adjustment revealed two different patterns. Firstly, socioeconomic status influenced child's school adjustment through maternal psychological well-being. Secondly, maternal psychological well-being affected by socioeconomic status contributed to child's school adjustment through positive child-rearing behavior and positive peer relationship. Focusing on maternal psychological well-being and mother's child-rearing behavior, the implication for promoting child's school adjustment are discussed.

  • The study is to investigate mothers' parental beliefs about child development and the children's developmental tasks, and to explore the relationship between mother's parental beliefs and child-rearing behaviors. The subjects are 113 pairs of 4- to 5-year-old children and their mothers. For measuring maternal beliefs about child-development, 'beliefs about development scale' and 'child-rearing beliefs scales' were used. For mother's child-rearing behaviors, 'child rearing behavior observation scale' was used. The main results were: first, mothers value the cognitive theory and 'autonomous behavior' higher than 'conforming behavior' in developing their children. Second, there were no differences in mother's parenting beliefs in the factors of 'gender of their children' and 'maternal job status', while there were significant differences in maternal beliefs according to the levels of mother's education and family income. Third, sub-scales of their parenting beliefs were correlated with interactive behaviors between them and their children. The more mothers put importance on cognitive theory and children's autonomous behaviors, the more their supportive child-rearing behaviors during child-mother task solving situations were showed.
