The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. Dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion was employed to predict the forming defects such as shear band, inner and/or surface cracks. This approach was coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The simulation results fur the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observation. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The formation of forming defects in the extruded tube was attributed to non-uniform distribution of strain, strain rate and temperatures in the extruded tubes for the given test conditions.

Intrinsic gettering is usually used to improve wafer quality which is an important factor for reliable ULSI devices. The two-step annealing method was adopted in order to investigate interactions between oxygens and secondary defects during oxygen precipitation process in lightly and heavily boron doped silicon wafers with high energy $^{11}B^+$ ion implantation. Secondary defects were inspected nearby the projected range by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Oxygen pileup was measured in the vicinity of the projected range by secondary ion mass spectrometry for heavily boron doped silicon wafers.

Defects in solids play a vital role on thermoelectric properties through the direct impacts of electronic band structure and electron/phonon transports, which can improve the electronic and thermal properties of a given thermoelectric semiconductor. Defects in semiconductors can be divided into four different types depending on their geometric dimensions, and thus understanding the effects on thermoelectric properties of each type is of a vital importance. This paper reviews the recent advances in the various thermoelectric semiconductors through defect engineering focusing on the charge carrier and phonon behaviors. First, we clarify and summarize each type of defects in thermoelectric semiconductors. Then, we review the recent achievements in thermoelectric properties by applying defect engineering when introducing defects into semiconductor lattices. This paper ends with a brief discussion on the challenges and future directions of defect engineering in the thermoelectric field.
The magnetic nondestructive test can be applied to evaluate the magnetic material characteristics and the fracture properties through the internal defects of SA-508 used in the pressure vessels of the nuclear power plants as the direct and accurate in-situ testing methods. The fracture toughness, yield strength and the stress distribution around the defects in the surface and sub-surface of magnetic materials can be directly estimated by Bark-hausen noise(BN) methods as NDT. The testing process of SA-508 by Barkhausen noise method was advanced by controlling the austenizing peak temperature and the time of maintenance at a constant austenizing peak temperature, therefore causing the variation of fracture toughness. Through above process. we can evaluate the variations of effective grain size and the correlation of effective grain size and FATT at each situation. And the stress distribution around the defects can be quantified nondestructively through Barkhausen method.

Since the upsetting type is superior to an extrusion type to get the dimensional accuracy of cold forged spur gear, the upsetting type process far spur gear cold forging has been studied. FE analysis of upsetting type process fur spur gear cold forging was performed to investigate about flow pattern of workpiece and die stress. To analyze the elastic characteristics of die, both rigid and elastic material model were used during loading stage. Under-filled defects were detected In lower portions of spur gear forged by upsetting type in experimental. When the elastic material model for die was used, the under-filled defects could be predicted. On the other hand, if the material model of die was rigid, the defects could not been presented because the die deflection was not considered.

According to request of insulating materials for high-voltage, recently we make effort not only to develop diagnostic skills of aging state but also to discover defects in insulating material in the early. Especially, partial discharge has been actively studied as a non-destructive diagnosis technique and very useful method. Because the method of partial discharge measurement has damages less than other conventional diagnosis technique. In this paper, the characteristics of partial discharge was investigated and studied on many samples with voids. In order to adapt as a practical diagnosis technique, it is studied on the characteristics of partial discharge and insulation breakdown in the high voltage. We suggest that partial discharge measurement can be used in order to diagnose defects in high-voltage insulation materials.
We carry the knowledge that the skeleton bones of the human body are not always without defects and some various defects could occur in them. In the present paper, as the first endeavor, free vibration and buckling analysis of femur bones with femoral defects are investigated. A major strength of this study is the modeling of defects in femur bones. Materialise Mimics software is adopted to model the bone geometry and the SOLIDWORKS software is used to generate the defects in bones. Next, the ABAQUS software is employed to study the behaviors of bones with defects.
This study explores the ability of non-destructive assay techniques to detect a partial material defect in which 100 g of plutonium are diverted from the center of a 1000 g can of PuO2 powder. Four safeguards measurements techniques: neutron multiplicity counting, calorimetry, gravimetry, and gamma ray spectroscopy are used in an attempt to detect the defect. Several materials are added to the partial defect PuO2 can to replicate signatures of the diverted material. 252Cf is used to compensate for the doubles neutron counts, 241Am is used to compensate for the decay heat, and aluminum is used to compensate for the weight. Although, the doubles and triples difference before and after diversion are statistically indistinguishable with the AWCC in fast and thermal mode, the difference in the singles counts are statistically detectable in both modes. The relatively short half-life of 252Cf leads to a decrease (three sigma uncertainty) in the doubles neutron counts after 161 days. Combining this with the precise quantity of 241Am needed (10.7 g) to mimic the heat signature and the extreme precision in 252Cf mass needed to defeat neutron multiplicity measurements gives reassurance in the International Atomic Energy Agency's ability to detect partial material defects.

Non-destructive testing methods for composite materials (e.g., carbon fiber-reinforced and glass fiber-reinforced plastic) have been widely used to detect damage in the overall industry. This study detects defects using optical infrared thermography. The transient heat transport in a solid body is characterized by two dynamic quantities, namely, thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity. The first quantity describes the speed with thermal energy diffuses through a material, whereas the second one represents a type of thermal inertia. The defect detection rate is increased by utilizing a lock-in method and performing a comparison of the defect detection rates. The comparison is conducted by dividing the irradiation method into reflection and transmission methods and the irradiation time into 50 mHz and 100 mHz. The experimental results show that detecting defects at 50 mHz is easy using the transmission method. This result implies that low-frequency thermal waves penetrate a material deeper than the high-frequency waves.
