  • Recently, the design and construction of massive concrete structures are increased. But, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass make the construction of massive concrete structures be very difficult. Therefore, in Seohae Grand Bridge Project, the field measurement of hydration heat for the massive concrete footings(11$\times$22$\times$4m) was carried out. It was shown to be possible to construct the massive concrete footing successfully by application of pipe cooling system. And the measurement results showed that standard code for concrete practice was very conservative.

  • Recently, the design and construction of massive concrete structures are increased, But, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass makes the construction of massive concrete structures be very difficult. Therefore, various techniques of the thermal stress control of the mass concrete have been widely used. One of them is pipe-cooling which reduces the temperature of concrete with flowing water. It was shown to be possible to construct the massive concrete foundation of urban bridge successfully by application of pipe-cooling system with steel pipe and water circulation. It was also found to expected to make it possible to reduce the probability of thermal crack development in a massive concrete foundation of urban bridge by pipe-cooling system.

  • Early age cracking of concrete is a widespread and complicated problem, and diverse applications in practical engineering have focused on this issue. Since massive concrete base slab composes the infrastructure of other concrete structures such as pier, concrete dam, and high rise buildings, early age cracking of that is considered as a crucial problem. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) implemented with the age-dependent microplane model was performed. For a massive concrete base slab, cracking initiation and propagation, and deformation variation were investigated with concrete age. In massive concrete slab, autogenous shrinkage increases the risk of early age cracking and it reduces reinforcement effect on control of early age cracking. Gradual crack occurrence is experienced from exterior surface towards interior of the slab in case of combined hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage. FEA implemented with enhanced microplane model successfully simulates the typical cracking patterns due to edge restraint in concrete base slab.

  • Description of the behavior of the R.C structural members fixed on massive concrete is not normally generalization of recognized configuration for regular R.C. design guidanes. This can be due to the complexity of evaluation of internal resistancy and deflection changes of the members subjected to the various external forces. On the base of axially loaded member fixed on footing, however, the estimation of deflection changes due to flexural force shear force and rotational force is to be carried out in ways of specifying the bond characteristics of axial bars embedded in massive concrete. This work is to quantify adhesion of steel-concrete, initial concrete cracking stress near bar rib, maximum bond stress and residual stress in concrete respectively. In addition to quantification of them for particulate behavior, the suggestions of multi-linear bond stress-slip diagram made in carrying out finite element analyses for adhesion failure, examining concrete cracking status and reviewing existing experimental data lead to alternatively constructed relationship between bond stress and slip for a axial bars embedded massive concrete.

  • The object of this study is to compare properties of massive fly-ash concrete with plain concrete. Two concrete mixtures comprising two batch each $1.0m^3$ in volume, were made from ready mixed concrete batch plant. The water-to-cementitious materials ratio was kept constant at 51.4%. Therefore, massive concrete specimen($W800{\times}D800{\times}H800mm$) was cast from ready mixed concrete to analyze history of temperature and core strength properties. Bleeding, time of slump loss and time of setting of the fresh concrete were measured. In order to estimate the properties of massive fly-ash concrete in hardened concrete, non-destructive tests such as rebound hardness, ultrasonic pulse velocity and maturity were performed and analyzed.

  • Recently, constructions of huge reinforced concrete structures such as nuclear power stations have been increased. When massive concrete is placed, cracking due to the hydration heat of cement is recognized as a major problem. The development of thermal stress is influenced by the structure shape and the constraint conditions, and cracks usually occure from tensile stresses which developed due to temperature drop. In this study a protocol specimen is made to examine the distribution of temperature and thermal stress of reaction wall of Daewoo Institute Construction Technology. The size of the specimen is made by considering minimum size of real structure. In this study, concrete strain gauge, concrete stress gauge, concrete non-stress gauge, and thermocouples, are instrumented to measure thermal stress in massive concrete structure. A new measuring technique is proposed to calculate thermal stress.

  • Concrete structure placed in marine environment is subject to many different types of potential attack. Therefore the sea water resistance of cement and concrete must be considered when it is used for structure in the ocean. For this purpose, this study was peformed to investigate the properties of several types of cements for a massive concrete placed in marine environment.

  • Relative humidity and strains within a massive concrete cylinder (${\varphi}450mm{\times}900mm$) in the drying and the re-saturating process were measured for elucidating the process of ASR surface cracking in concrete. The expansion behavior of mortars in dry atmospheres with various R.H. values and the resaturating process was revealed. Non- or less-expansive layers were formed in near-surface regions in the concrete cylinder in the drying process, but ASR expansions actively progressed in inner portions. After resaturating, R.H. values of near-surface regions rapidly increased with time, but expansions in the regions were found to be very small. However, in the middle portions, of which R.H. values were kept 80% ~ 90% R.H. in the drying process, expansion actively progressed, resulting in further development of surface cracks in the re-saturating process.

  • Concrete structure that has been constructed in real field is on multi-axial stress state condition. After placing of concrete, hydration heat and shrinkage of concrete can cause various stress conditions with respect to the restraint level and condition. So, to predict the early age behavior of concrete structure, multi-axial material model is required and microplane model is acceptable. Recently, many studies have been performed on the microplane model, but the model developed up to now has been related to hardened concrete that material property is constant with concrete age. So, it is inappropriate to apply this model immediately to analyze the early age behavior of concrete. In this study, microplane model that can predict early age behavior of concrete was developed and cracking analysis using that was performed to describe cracking behavior for massive concrete sturucture.

  • Thermal cracks ard occured when thermal stress due to the hydration of cement exceeds the tensile strength of concrete. Since cracking causes poor durability of concrete, the effect of thermal cracking should be included for the desing and construction of massive concrete structures. In this study, an experiments are performed for the investigation of time dependent temperature and thermal stress of massive concrete structure at early ages. In order to measure temperatures and thermal stresses, concrete stress meter, embedded strain meter, non-stress meter, and thermocouples are used. Based on the analyses of measured thermal stress data, measured values by concrete stress meter are more reliable than those by embedded strain meter and non-stress meter, And measured values by concrete stress meter are compared with the calculated values by FEM program developed by DICT (DWTS2D). Calculated values by DWTS2D show good agreement with measured values.
