  • This paper deals with the behavior of fresh concrete that is under vibration using mass-spring model (MSM). To this end, behaviors of two different full scale precast concrete molds were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were performed under vibration with the use of a computer-based data acquisition system. Transducers were used to measure time-dependent lateral displacements at some points on mold while mold is empty and full of fresh concrete. Analytical modeling of molds used in experiments were prepared by three dimensional finite element method (3D FEM) using software. Modeling of full mold, using MSM, was made to solve the problem of dynamic interaction between fresh concrete and mold. Numerical displacement histories obtained from time history analysis were compared with experimental results. The comparisons show that the measured and computed results are compatible.

  • In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to be able to predict the italic and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. In this paper, a spring-mass-beam model is introduced. This model consists of rotational springs, shear springs and masses. The formulations for static and dynamic behavior of sheets are introduced. And some simulations are presented for static and dynamic cases.

  • In this paper, using $\mu$ synthesis algorithm with structured uncertainty, we design controller and apply it for the Two-Inertia resonance(TMS: Two Mass Spring) system. The TMS system is one of the simplest models which generate a torsional vibration. In this system, it is required to design a controller achieving the control performance while suppressing the torsional vibration. Furthermore, when vibration frequency for the system is varying by reason of parameter variations, we should consider parameter variations in controller design. Then, we design two other controller schemes of the PI controller and the standard $H_{\infty}$ controller and compare these controllers with the controller designed by the $\mu$ synthesis robust control method by using simulations and experiments.

  • Dual Mass Flywheel(DMF) is used in order to improve the vibration characteristics of drivetrain of manual transmission vehicles. Regardless of its complexity and high cost, application of DMF is keep increasing due to a trend of using Diesel engines in passenger cars and light weight design of drivetrains. Modeling and analysis of DMF is rather simple, but finding out optimum parameters of damper may not be easy. Furthermore, its realization in DMF has some limitations due to DMF's structure and its structure dependent damping characteristics. Requirements on spring-damper characteristics of DMF has been reviewed and investigations on structures and damping characteristics of currently Produced DMFs have been made in this paper. Also, ideal spring and damper characteristics has been proposed based on such investigations.

  • The Two-Mass Spring(TMS or Two-Inertia Resonance) system is one of the simplest models which generate a torsional vibration. In this system, it is required to design a controller achieving the control performance while suppressing the torsional vibration. In this paper, we compared and considered with the state feedback effects for the TMS system. By connecting each controller design to the state feedback control, we could predict each controller performances and decide weighting functions and parameters of LQ and $H_\infty$ controller.

  • In pelagic longline, deploying the gear such that the depth of the hook is the same as that of the target fish is important to improve the fishing performance and selectivity. In this study, the depth of the tuna longline hook was estimated using the mass-spring model, catenary curve method, and secretariat of the pacific commission Pythagorean method in order to improve the performance of the longline gear in Fiji. The former two methods were estimated to be relatively accurate, and the latter showed a large error. Further, the mass-spring model accounted for the influence of tidal current in the ocean, which was found to be appropriate for use in field trials.

  • Among the various aspects of offline handwritten character patterns, it is the great variety of writing styles and variations that renders the task of computer recognition very hard. The immense variety of character shape has been recognized but rarely studied during the past decades of numerous research efforts. This paper tries to address the problem of measuring image distortions and handwritten character patterns with respect to reference patterns. This work is based on mass-spring mesh model with the introduction of simulated electric charge as a source of the external force that can aid decoding the shape distortion. Given an input image and a reference image, the charge is defined, and then the relaxation procedure goes to find the optimum configuration of shape or patterns of least potential. The relaxation process is based on the fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithm, well-known for numerical integration. The proposed method of modeling is rigorous mathematically and leads to interesting results. Additional feature of the method is the global affine transformation that helps analyzing distortion and finding a good match by removing a large scale linear disparity between two images.

  • A cable-stayed bridge (CSB) is one of the most complicated structures, especially when subjected to earthquakes and taking into consideration the effect of soil-structure-interaction (SSI). A CSB of a 500 m mid-span was modeled by the SAP2000 software and was subjected to four different earthquakes. To mitigate the harmful effect of the vibration generated from each earthquake, four mitigation schemes were used and compared with the non-mitigation model to determine the effectiveness of each scheme, when applying on the SSI or fixed CSB models. For earthquake mitigation, tuned mass damper (TMD) systems and spring dampers with different placements were used to help reduce the seismic response of the CBS model. The pylons, the mid-span of the deck and the pylon-deck connections are the best TMDs and spring dampers placements to achieve an effective reduction of the earthquake response on such bridges.

  • Quickness and precision are the two most important requirements for an industrial scale used in production lines. In this paper, a new approach, "Dynamic-Mass measurement control System of Acceleration and Displacement(DMS-AD) sensing", is presented to improve some of drowbacks in conventional scales. The system, consisted of acceleration and displace- ment sensors, spring scale and microcomputer, is based on full utilization of dynamic mass measurement of acceleration and displacement via microcomputer-assisted real time monitoring. The rsulting system, when combined with appropriate dynamic mass estimation algorithm software, has shown its effectiveness in terms of two desirable characteristics required. required.

  • This paper discusses on the dynamic responsed of an elastically restrained beam under a moving mass of constant velocity. Governing equations of motion taking into account of all inertia effects of the moving mass were derived by Galerkin's mode summation method, and Runge-Kutta integration method was applied to solve the differential equations. Numerical solutions for dynamic deflections of beams were obtained for the changes of the various parameters (spring stiffness, spring position, mass ratios and velocity ratios of the moving mass). In order to verify the numerical predictions for the dynamic response of the beam, experiments were conducted. Numerical solutions for the dynamic responses of the test beam have a good agreement with experimental ones.
