  • The present study investigated the effects of the experimental parameters on the cooling characteristics of the multichip module cooled by the indirect liquid cooling method using water and paraffin slurry. The experimental parameters are mass fraction of 2.5 ~ 7.5% for paraffin slurry, heat flux of 10 ~ 40 W/cm$^{2}$ for the simulated VLSI chips and Reynolds numbers of 5,300 ~ 15,900. The apparatus consisted of test section, paraffin slurry maker, pump, constant temperature baths, flowmeter, etc. The test section made of in-line, four-row array of 12 heat sources for simulating 4 * 3 multichip module which was flush mounted on the top wall of a horizontal rectangular channel with the aspect ratio of 0.2. The inlet temperature was 20 deg. C for all experiments. The size of paraffin slurry was constant as 10 ~ 40 .mu.m befor and after the experiment. The chip surface temperatures for paraffin slurry with the mass fraction of 7.5% showed lower by 16 deg. C than those for water when the heat flux is 40 W/cm$^{2}$. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry with the mass fraction of 7.5% were larger by 17 ~ 25% than those for water at the first and the fourth row. The local heat transfer coefficients reached to a row-number-independent, thermally fully developed value approximately after the third row. The local Nusselt numbers at the fourth row for paraffin slurry with the mass fraction of 7.5% were larger by 23 ~ 29% than those for water.

  • A significant amount of studies were performed on evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop in microfin tubes. Most studies, however, focused on the refrigerants used in air-conditioners or heat pumps, and very limited information is available on R-404A, which is used in low temperature refrigeration. In this study, the evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R-404A in a 9.5 mm O.D. microfin tube were investigated for the mass flux range from $80kg/m^2s$ and $200kg/m^2s$. A smooth tube of the same outer dimeter was also tested for comparison. The results showed that the heat transfer enhancement ratio of the microfin tube increased with increasing mass flux and the heat flux decreased. The relative contribution of the convective heat transfer and the heat flux on total heat transfer was attributed to the observed trend. The pressure drops of the microfin tube were slightly (maximum 28%) larger than those of the smooth tube. Existing correlations do not adequately predict the measured heat transfer coefficients of pressure drops, probably due to the test range of the present study, which is outside of the existing correlations.

  • After produce the extracted wood to silicic acid gel, sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide with application of the making method for carbon dioxide, ignition time, ignition temperature, mass loss rate and critical heat flux are measured according to external radiation source (20, 25, 35 and 50 $kW/m^2$). From the results, pressure impregnation wood to use with water glass and carbon dioxide has fire retardant performance at heat flux (less than 20 $kW/m^2$) of Pre-Flashover fires. If we find out the excellent maxing ratio through continuously study, it might be decided to be able to be utilized as fire-retardant wood.

  • Concentration of welding fumes and their components is known to be hazardous to welder and adjacent worker. To determine the generation rates of metals in fumes, $CO_2$ flux cored arc welding on stainless steel was performed in well designed fume collection chamber. Variables were different products of flux cored wire(2 domestic products and 4 foreign products) and input energy(low-, optimal- , high input energy). Mass of welding fumes was determined by gravimetric method(NIOSH 0500 method), and 17 metals were analysed by inductively coupled plasm-atomic emission spectroscopy(NIOSH 7300 method). Flux cored wire tube and flux were analysed by scanning electron microscopy to determine their metal composition. 17 metals were classified by their generation rates. Generation rates of iron, manganese, potassium and sodium were all above 50mg/min at optimal input energy level. Generation rates of chromium and amorphous silica were 25~50mg/min. At 1~25mg/min level, nickel, titanium, molybdenum, and aluminum were included. Copper, zinc, calcium, lead, magnesium, lithium, and cobalt were generated below 1 mg/min. Generation rates of metal components in fumes were influenced by input energy, types of flux cored wire. Flux cored wire was consisted of outer shell tube and inner flux. Iron, chromium, and nickel were the major components of outer tube. Flux contained iron, chromium, nickel, potassium, sodium, silica, and manganese. The use of flux cored wire can increase the hazards by increasing the amounts of fumes formed relative to that of solid wire. The reason might be the direct transfer of elements from the flux, since the flux is fine power. Ratio of metals to the fume of flux cored wire was lower than that of solid wire because non-metal components of flux were transferred. Total metal content of fumes in flux cored arc welding was 47.4(24.3~57.2) percent that is much lower than that of solid wire, 75.9 percent. We found that generation rates of iron, manganese, chromium and nickel, all well known to cause work related disease to welder, increased more rapidly with increasing input energy than those of fumes. To reduce worker exposure to fumes and hazardous component at source, further research is needed to develop new welding filler materials that decrease both the amount of fumes and hazardous components.

  • In order to analyze the flammability limit and structure of the gaseous methane-gaseous oxygen diffusion flame formed through a shear coaxial injector, combustion experiments were carried out according to the condition of injector recess and propellant mass-flow rate. As a result, it was confirmed that stable anchored flame was observed even at the high oxygen Reynolds number as the propellant momentum flux ratio increased, and that the recess had no significant influence on the flame shape and flammability limit. The anchored flame visualized through a chemiluminescence showed the maximum OH radical emission intensity at a specific position, irrespective of the propellant injection condition, and the radical intensity was greatly reduced by the injector recess.

  • Effects of opening distance on liquid-gas spray of pintle injector were experimentally investigated under atmospheric condition by using water and air as simulants of propellants. Discharge coefficients($C_d$) and mass flow rates were calculated with various injection conditions; 0.1 bar - 1.0 bar for water pressures and 0.2 mm - 1.0 mm for the pintle opening distances. Spray angles were measured from the spray images that were obtained by a shadowgraphy method. When opening distance is 0.2 mm, liquid sheet is not formed properly and it show non-uniform spray. than it can result in combustion instability. it has a weak correlation between the momentum flux ratio and the spray angle, while it has a strong correlation between the momentum ratio and spray angle. Finally the spray angles reduced exponentially when the momentum ratio increased and the spray angles converged to about 40 degrees.

  • Atmospheric bulk (wet and dry) samples were monthly collected in Masan and Heangam areas of Korea, to assess the deposition flux and seasonal variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Deposition fluxes of PAHs in bulk samples were determined using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer detector (GC/MSD). Particle deposition fluxes from Masan and Haengam areas varied from 13 to $87\;g/m^2/year$ and from 5 to $52\;g/m^2/year$, respectively. PAHs deposition fluxes in atmospheric bulk samples in Masan and Haengam areas ranged from 135 to $464\;{\mu}g/m^2/year$ and from 62.2 to $194\;{\mu}g/m^2/year$, respectively. Atmospheric deposition fluxes of particles and PAHs in this study were comparable to or slightly lower values than those from different locations in Korea and other countries. PAHs profiles of atmospheric deposition bulk samples showed slightly different from two sampling areas, however the predominant species of PAHs were similar. Indeno (1,2,3-c,d)pyrene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, phenanthrene compounds were the most detected PAHs in deposition bulk samples. Carcinogenic PAHs occupied the contribution of approximately $30-40\%$ of the total PAHs deposition fluxes. The non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) was used, to assess the differentiation of PAHs source between two sampling areas. The result suggests that PAHs contamination sources were different according to the location and season surveyed. There was no an apparent relationship between the PAHs deposition flux against temperature and rainfall amount, even though summer season with the highest temperature and the largest amount of precipitation showed the lowest PAHs deposition flux. Benzo(e)pyrene/benzo(a)pyrene ratio indicated that the photo-degradation process was one of important factors to the seasonal variation of PAHs with the lower deposition fluxes.

  • Forced convective boiling heat transfer coefficients were predicted for an annular flow inside a horizontal tube for pure refrigerants and nonazeotropic binary refrigerant mixtures. The heat transfer coefficients were calculated based on the turbulent temperature profile in liquid film and vapor core considering the composition difference in vapor and liquid phases, and the nonlinearity in mixing rules for the calculation of mixture properties. The heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants were estimated within a standard deviation of 14% compared with available experimental data. For nonazeotropic binary refrigerant mixtures, prediction of the heat transfer coefficients was made with a standard deviation of 18%. The heat transfer coefficients of refrigerant mixtures were lower than linearly interpolated values calculated from the heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants. This degradation was represented by several factors such as the difference between the liquid and the overall compositions, the conductivity ratio and the viscosity ratio of both components in refrigerant mixtures. The temperature change due to the concentration gradient was a major factor for the heat transfer degradation and the mass flux itself at the interface had a minor effect.

  • Six shear coaxial injectors for a 3 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using oxygen and methane as propellants were designed and manufactured by considering geometric design parameters such as a recess length and a taper angle. Cold-flow tests on the injectors were performed using water and air as simulants. By changing the water mass flow rate and air mass flow rate, the injection pressure drop under single-injection and bi-injection was measured. The discharge coefficients through the injector oxidizer-side and fuel-side were calculated and the discharge coefficient ratio between bi-injection and single-injection was obtained. Under single-injection, the recess served to reduce the injection pressure drop on the injector fuel-side. For the injectors without recess, the discharge coefficients under bi-injection were almost the same as those under single-injection. However, for the injectors with recess, the taper angle and bi-injection had a significant effect on the discharge coefficient.
