  • Recent years have been higher demands for automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems that are able to operate robustly in an acoustically noisy environment. This paper proposes an improved product hidden markov model (HMM) used for bimodal speech recognition. A two-dimensional training model is built based on dependently trained audio-HMM and visual-HMM, reflecting the asynchronous characteristics of the audio and video streams. A weight coefficient is introduced to adjust the weight of the video and audio streams automatically according to differences in the noise environment. Experimental results show that compared with other bimodal speech recognition approaches, this approach obtains better speech recognition performance.

  • In this paper, the probabilistic relations of dual morphological operations, such as dilation and erosion, closing and opening, and close- open and open-close, and the statistical properties for a continuous stationary lst order Gauss-Markov source are analyzed. The result is that the dual filters have symmetrical means and skews, and equal variances. Also, the statistics of morphological filters are very similar with those of input source, as correlation coefficient increases.

  • In this paper we propose a new feature, average power, for speech segments extraction with hidden Markov models, which is based on mel frequencies of speech signals. The average power is compared with the mel frequency cepstral coefficients, MFCC, and the power coefficient. To compare performances of three types of features, speech data are collected for words with explosives which are generally known hard to be detected. Experiments show that the average power is more accurate and efficient than MFCC and the power coefficient for speech segments extraction in environments with various levels of noise.

  • This paper presents an effective Markov transition matrix (EMTM), which will be used to calculate the wind speed at the target site in a wind farm to accurately predict wind energy production. The existing MTS prediction method using a Markov transition matrix (MTM) exhibits a limitation where significant prediction variations are observed owing to random selection errors and its bin width. The proposed method selects the effective states of the MTM and refines its bin width to reduce the error of random selection during a gap filling procedure in MTS. The EMTM reduces the level of variation in the repeated prediction of wind speed by using the coefficient of variations and range of variations. In a case study, MTS exhibited better performance than other MCP models when EMTM was applied to estimate a one-day wind speed, by using mean relative and root mean square errors.

  • Hidden Markov Model(HMM) has a doubly embedded stochastic process with an underlying stochastic process that can be observed through another set of stochastic processes. This structure of HMM is useful for modeling vector sequence that doesn't look like a stochastic process but has a hidden stochastic process. So, HMM approach has become popular in various areas in last decade. The increasing popularity of HMM is based on two facts : rich mathematical structure and proven accuracy on critical application. In this paper, we applied continuous HMM (CHMM) approach with AR coefficient to detect and predict the chatter of lathe bite and to diagnose the wear of oil Journal bearing using rotor shaft displacement. Our examples show that CHMM approach is very efficient method for machine health monitoring and prediction.

  • In this study, the influence of mass flow rate on the isentropic efficiency of the steam turbine nozzle stage is investigated. A realistic three-dimensional numerical model, which is based on the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, is developed for the steam phase. The comprehensive conservation laws and a kinetic model for steam are investigated. With two different models for the three-dimensional geometry of the nozzle stage, the pressure and temperature distributions, velocity, Mach number. and Markov energy loss coefficient are calculated. A maximum efficiency of 96.66% is found at a mass flow rate of 0.9 kg/s in model A. In model B, a maximum efficiency of 97.32% is found at a rate of 1.6 kg/s. It is determined that the isentropic nozzle efficiency increases as the Markov energy loss coefficient decreases through a nearly linear relationship.

  • It is of the most urgent necessity to get hydrological time series of long duration for the establishment of rational design and operation criterion for the Agricultural hydraulic structures. This study was conducted to select best fitted frequency distribution for the monthly runoff and to simulate long series of generated flows by multi-season first order Markov model with comparison of statistical parameters which are derivated from observed and sy- nthetic flows in the five watersheds along Geum river basin. The results summarized through this study are as follows. 1. Both two parameter gamma and two parameter lognormal distribution were judged to be as good fitted distributions for monthly discharge by Kolmogorov-Smirnov method for goodness of fit test in all watersheds. 2. Statistical parameters were obtained from synthetic flows simulated by two parameter gamma distribution were closer to the results from observed flows than those of two para- meter lognormal distribution in all watersheds. 3. In general, fluctuation for the coefficient of variation based on two parameter gamma distribution was shown as more good agreement with the observed flow than that of two parameter lognormal distribution. Especially, coefficient of variation based on two parameter lognormal distribution was quite closer to that of observed flow during June and August in all years. 4. Monthly synthetic flows based on two parameter gamma distribution are considered to give more reasonably good results than those of two parameter lognormal distribution in the multi-season first order Markov model in all watersheds. 5. Synthetic monthly flows with 100 years for eack watershed were sjmulated by multi- season first order Markov model based on two parameter gamma distribution which is ack- nowledged to fit the actual distribution of monthly discharges of watersheds. Simulated sy- nthetic monthly flows may be considered to be contributed to the long series of discharges as an input data for the development of water resources. 6. It is to be desired that generation technique of synthetic flow in this study would be compared with other simulation techniques for the objective time series.

  • We consider the subdiagonal bilinear model and ARMA model with subdiagonal bilinear errors. Sufficient conditions for geometric ergodicity of associated Markov chains are derived by using results on generalized random coefficient autoregressive models and then strict stationarity and ,a-mixing property with exponential decay rates for given processes are obtained.

  • Availabilities of subsea Blowout Preventers (BOP) in the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (GoM OCS) is investigated using a Markov method. An updated ${\beta}$ factor model by SINTEF is used for common-cause failures in multiple redundant systems. Coefficient values of failure rates for the Markov model are derived using the ${\beta}$ factor model of the PDS (reliability of computer-based safety systems, Norwegian acronym) method. The blind shear ram preventer system of the subsea BOP components considers a demand rate to reflect reality more. Markov models considering the demand rate for one or two components are introduced. Two data sets are compared at the GoM OCS. The results show that three or four pipe ram preventers give similar availabilities, but redundant blind shear ram preventers or annular preventers enhance the availability of the subsea BOP. Also control systems (PODs) and connectors are contributable components to improve the availability of the subsea BOPs based on sensitivity analysis.
