한국산 미기록 해조 2종(Phyllodictyon anastomosans 및 Saccharina ochotensis)에 대한 주해 (Two New Records of Marine Algae Phyllodictyon anastomosans and Saccharina ochotensis from Korea)

  • Phyllodictyon anastomosans (Harvey) Kraft et M.J. Wynne and Saccharina ochotensis (Miyabe) E.E. Lane C. Mayes, Druehl et G.W. Saunders are first recorded in Korea. A pantropical green alga, P. anastomosans was collected on a rock wall in the subtital zone of Jeju Island. This species has very tiny fan-shaped and netted thalli that are green in color. A cold temperate brown alga, P. ochotensis has very thick and leathery thalli that are deep brown in color. Morphological characteistics and habitats of these species are described with taxonomic accounts.

  • Marine benthic flora was investigated in an Arctic bay. Specimens of chlorophyte, phaeophyte, and rhodophyte were collected and examined over the period from July to August 2003 from Kongsfjorden Spitsbergen in Svalbard Islands. A total of 28 genera and 32 species (5 chlorophytes, 18 phaeophytes, and 9 rhodophytes) was identified and described. A green alga Enteromorpha linza(Linnaeus) J. Agardh, a brown alga Asperococcus compresus Griffiths ex Hooker, and three red algae Gracilaria gracilis (Stackhouse) Steentoft et al., Rhodymenia pacifica Kylin and Schizochlaenion rhodotrichum Wynne et Norris were recorded in Svalbard Islands for the first time.

  • 해양 생물에는 육지 생물에 비해 훨씬 다양하고 특이한 구조의 sterol이 나타나고 있으며 이런 특질들은 화학자들에게 여러가지 흥미있는 생화학적 혹은 유기화학적인 관심을 불러 일으며 왔다. 본 연구에서는 한국산 청각(Codium fragile)으로부터 3개의 sterol 성분을 분리 확인하였다. 주 sterol 성분은 탄소가 29인 clerosterol 였으며 codisterol과 cholesterol도 소량 발견되었다.

Mixotrophic Cultivation of Marine Alga Tetraselmis sp. Using Glycerol and Its Effects on the Characteristics of Produced Biodiesel

  • As a possible feedstock for biodiesel, the marine green alga Tetraselmis sp. was cultivated under different conditions of phototrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultures. Glycerol, a byproduct from biodiesel production process, was used as the carbon source of mixotrophic and heterotrophic culture. The effects of glycerol supply and nitrate-repletion were compared for different trophic conditions. Mixotrophic cultivation exhibited higher biomass productivity than that of phototrophic and heterotrophic cultivation. Maximum lipid productivity of 55.5 mg L-1 d-1 was obtained in the mixotrophic culture with 5 g L-1 of glycerol and 8.8 mM of nitrate due to the enhancement of both biomass and lipid accumulation. The major fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) in the produced biodiesel were palmitic acid (C16:0), oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2), and linolenic acid (C18:3). The degree of unsaturation was affected by different culture conditions. The biodiesel properties predicted by correlation equations based on the FAME profiles mostly complied with the specifications from the US, Europe and Korea, with the exception of the cold-filter plugging point (CFPP) criterion of Korea.

Growth responses of Chondrus ocellatus Holmes (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) to two endophytes, Mikrosyphar zosterae Kuckuck (Ectocarpales, Ochrophyta) and Ulvella ramosa (N. L. Gardner) R. Nielsen (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in culture

  • To examine the effects of two endophytic algae, Mikrosyphar zosterae (brown alga) and Ulvella ramosa (green alga), on the host Chondrus ocellatus (red alga), culture experiments were conducted. Four treatments were made: endophyte-free (Chondrus only), endophyte-M (Chondrus + Mikrosyphar), endophyte-U (Chondrus + Ulvella), and endophytes-M U (Chondrus + Mikrosyphar + Ulvella). After 3 weeks, the relative growth rates (RGRs) of frond lengths and the number of newly formed bladelets were examined. M. zosterae formed wart-like dots on C. ocellatus fronds, whereas U. ramosa made dark spots. The RGRs of frond lengths of C. ocellatus were significantly greater in the endophyte-free and endophyte-M treatment groups than in the endophyte-U and endophytes-M U treatment groups, indicating that the growth of host C. ocellatus was inhibited more by the green endophyte U. ramosa than the brown endophyte M. zosterae. The number of newly produced bladelets was greater in the endophyte-U and endophytes-M U groups than in the endophyte-free and endophyte-M treatment groups. These results indicate that the two endophytes inhibit growth of the host C. ocellatus. The negative effects of U. ramosa on C. ocellatus growth were more severe than those caused by M. zosterae. Furthermore, U. ramosa destroyed the apical meristems of C. ocellatus, whereas M. zosterae did not. On the other hand, C. ocellatus showed compensatory growth in the form of lateral branch production as U. ramosa attacked its apical meristems.

On the Accumulation of Radioactive Materials in Marine Organisms Along the Coast of Korea 3. Cesium-137 Activities in Several Edible Marine Algae

  • Continued to the previous papers, the present investigation is carried out to clarify cesium-137 activities and potassium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The potassium contents are variable, 1.5-29.6%, and 11.36% on an average, while most of the members contain them about 10-16% generally. Among the algal phyla, they are 13.49% in green, 10.82% in brown and 16.46% in red algae, respectively. Cesium-137 activities are variable, 0.19-8.13 pCi$\^$137/ Cs/g K, and 2.35 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K on an average in the samples investigated. Among the algal phyla they are 4.35 in green, 2.17 in brown and 0.89 pCi $\^$137/Cs/g K in red algae, respectively. Green algae contain especially higher activities compared with the other two groups. The brown alga, Myelophycus caespitosus shows the highest activities, 8.13 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K, among the members investigated. Considering the concentration factor, this plant would be an indicator plant of cesium-137 among the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

녹조대발생종 솜대마디말(Cladophora albida)의 유주자 방출과 초기생장에 환경요인이 미치는 영향 (Effects of Environmental Factors on Zoospore Release and Early Growth of the Green Tide Alga Cladophora albida)

  • We examined the effects of environmental factors on zoospore release and germling growth of the green tide alga Cladophora albida under various conditions of temperature${\times}$irradiance (zoospore release), temperature${\times}$irradiance${\times}$ nutrient (germling growth), and a single factor test of salinity. Zoospore release was maximized at $30^{\circ}C$ and $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the temperature irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Maximum germling growth was observed at $25^{\circ}C$ with $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and PES (Provasoli's Enriched Seawater) in the temperature irradiance nutrient experiment, and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Germlings grew faster at higher irradiances for a given temperature level, and also grew faster as salinity increased over the range of 5-34 psu. Overall, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were $30^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and 34 psu. Maximal germling growth occurred at $25^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, PES, and 34 psu. C. albida blooms are most likely to occur under these optimal environmental conditions, as plentiful zoospore release and rapid germling growth lead to population growth.

  • Kojic acid dimethyl ether (1), and the known kojic acid mono methyl ether (2), kojic acid (3) and phomaligol A (4) have been isolated from the organic extract of the broth of the marine-derived fungus Altenaria sp. collected from the surface of the marine green alga Ulva pertusa. The structures were assigned on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. Each isolate was tested for its tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Kojic acid (3) was found to have significant tyrosinase inhibitory activity, but compounds 1, 2, and 4 were found to be inactive.
