Flow mechanism around air flow sensor of electronic control engine, especially Karman vortex type, was investigated experimentally. The two-dimensional flow characteristics in the intermediate wake region behind a triangular vortex-generator respectively apex forward facing, apex backward facing and vertical flat plates following after apex forward facing(i.e vortex-flowmeter) were investigated at Reynolods number of $ReH=1.4\times10^4$; H is the width of a triangular vortex-generator. The vortex shedding frequency for wide Reynolds number from $7\times10^3$ to $2.1\times10^4$ was also surveyed. The velocity component was measured by X-type hot wire anemometer at 8H downstream from the bluff body. The coherent structure of the intermediate wake behind a bluff body was obtained by conditional phase average technique. As a result, it was verified that the vertical flat plates following after apex forward triangular vortex-generator make not only more linear relation between free stream velocity and vortex shedding frequency but also more periodic vortex in the vicinity of the center of wake.

Since world-wide oil shock on 1970s, many large size-low speed diesel engines, instead of steam turbines, are used for the industrial electric power generating plants due to their economic advantage of low specific fuel consumption. But it is very important to control their electric power fluctuation problems for the purpose of smooth parallel operation with existing power plants. In this paper the fluctuation problem of KEPCO Nam-cheju No.1 generator driven by diesel ngine(B & W 7K 60MC, 13931x138.5RPM) is investigated with analysis of torsional vibration of which 4th harmonic component is related to its power fluctuation. The problem can be improved by modification of cylinder arrangement and flywheel position in reverse sequence, equalizing the combustion gas pressure of all cylinder and installation of torsional vibration damper enlarged 30%(Je=7287Kg.m$^{2}$) and high quality balancing of generator rotor.

The prime mover performance of on - board Diesel Generator is well characterized by the variation of frequency and the load sharing on parallel running under electric load change. This study is aimed to configure the modeling for performance simulation regarding to DG operation which could be interested for education purpose or system analysis. The modeling had been made on the base of modules such as govenor, prime mover of diesel engine and generator with electric load system, which were then intergrated for total simula¬tion performance. One real model system has been introduced for deciding relating parameters and for the comparison of resulting performance in simulation. The responses from the modelling were confirmed in single and paralell operation, the results of which showed resonable accordance with the real system.

To facilitate low-pressure selective catalyst reduction (L.P SCR), a high exhaust-gas temperature of a four-stroke diesel engine for a ship's generator is required. This study aimed at reducing the exhaust-gas temperature by adjusting the valve open-close timing and fuel injection timing to satisfy the operating conditions of L.P SCR and prevent accidents associated with the generator engine due to high temperature. To lower exhaust-gas temperature, the angle of the camshaft was adjusted and the shim of the fuel injection pump was added. As a result, the maximum explosion pressure increased and the average of the turbocharger outlet temperature dropped. Considering the heat loss from the turbocharger outlet to the SCR inlet, the operation condition for L.P SCR was satisfied with 290 ℃. The study demonstrates that safe operation of a diesel generator can be achieved by lowering the exhaust-gas temperature.

Since the oil shock of '70s the engine makers have developed new types of diesel engine with low fuel consumption. There is an obvious tendency towards the use of poorer quality fuels, such as the residual oil from chemical processes of refinery. The shaft driving generators is also widely adopted on behalf of the auxiliary diesel engines, which are driving on the expensive diesel oil and have high fuel oil consumption rates, and some mania propulsion diesel engines are equipped with reduction gear systems to get better propulsive efficiency by slower propeller revolutions. The propulsion shafting system equipped with the shaft driving generator or the geared diesel engine shafting system has flexible couplings, and it requires extensive investigations of the torsional vibration and torque fluctuation in order to ensure the acceptable operation range in service. The characteristics of misfiring must be especially examined for the high viscosity fuels to be used. Both torsional vibration and fluctuating torque resulted from misfiring, should be examined for thier effects on the flexible coupling and propulsion shafting system. This paper is to investigate and solve the above mentioned problems which must be predicted on the design-stage of marine propulsion shafting system. A computer program is developed to calculate the indicated diagram, fluctating torque and torsional vibration for both normal and misfiring conditions.

This paper addresses some concerns faced by the shipping industry nowadays. Initially, the environmental issues were resolved and stricter regulations are now being implemented with regards to the exhaust gas, specifically nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), emitted from ships. Secondly, with the increasing and unstable cost of fuel oils in the world market, it has become almost a necessity to explore on a new alternative fuel. Hence, this study was conducted. An experiment was carried-out on a fishing survey vessel with the main engine (M/E) and generator engine (G/E) operated on expensive marine gas oil (MGO). During the experiment, two pre-refinery systems were installed and different fuel oil samples were employed for the M/E and the G/E. Furthermore, the NOx emission and soot concentration were monitored and verified. The results confirmed the compatibility of some fuel oil types to the engines and meeting the emission standards. MDO, MF15 and Bunker A can be used in place of MGO for the engines(M/E, G/E).

The dynamic stress of the diesel engine block is analyzed by using flexible-body dynamic analysis. Multiple loadings including the pressure load due to gas combustion, thermal load, and dynamic load are considered. Thermal load is assumed constant, however, pressure load and dynamic load are treated as time dependent. The present work is focused on the dynamic stress analysis, especially on finding critical points of the engine block. The analysis model includes four parts - engine block, generator, bed, and mounts. On the other hand, crank shaft, pistons, and main bearings are excluded from the model. However, their dynamic effects are applied by dynamic forces, obtained in the separate analysis. Dynamic stress is found by using flexible body dynamic analysis, and compared to the measured data.

The installation methods of diesel engines in ships would be largely classified into two groups : one is the direct mounting system fixing engine directly into double bottom of the hull, and the other is the resilient mounting system having vibration absorbers between engine and ship body such as rubber plate to prevent shocks or vibration transmission. The direct mounting system is generally used for large-sized low speed diesel engines, because the resilient mounting system has difficulties in reducing the natural frequency of engine itself under normal speed. On the contrary, the resilient mounting system is often used for medium or high speed engines for marine propulsion and generator that have light weight and high revolution speed. Recently, it is even applied to engines having relatively low speed(300-400rpm) for fishing boats. Although many researches for the resilient mounting system have been carried out, many problems in applying these results directly to marine vessels because most of these have been used for automobiles. Up to now we have had to depend on the professional foreign company in design and the supply of parts for the resilient mounting system of marinediesel engines utterly. In preseut study, the exciting forces of engines effecting to resilient mounting were examined, and patterns of vibration and evaluation procedure for force transmission from resilient mounting to the body of hull were established. Also, these results were applied to the analysis of free and forced vibration for the rubber-type resilient mounting systems of marine diesel engines. Besides, after changing the various design parameters, such as locations, angles, dynamic characteristics and the number of resilient mountings, the influences on resilient mounting system were also examined.
