  • The flow characteristics in a bifurcated duct are investigated experimentally. Physical properties such as mean velocity vectors, mean vorticity and total pressure distributions are obtained for three different Reynolds numbers(578, 620, 688) using PIV measurements and CFD analysis. Also, dividing duct $90^{\circ}$ were selected for study. The results of this study would be useful to the engineer in designing the flow systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and wastewater purification plants.

  • The die casting process was used to manufacture an automotive alternator housing. Generally automobile parts are required to be light and have high strength. The control of casting defects is important but has usually been depended only on the experience of the foundry engineer. Therefore simulations have been carried out on the die casting process of alternator housing. In this paper. we investigated the characteristics of the die casted alternator housing with the HPDC(High Pressure Die Casting) process. We presented the results of filling behavior and solidification process of the cast, The analysis results obtained from the filling behavior and solidification of cast agreed with test results.

A Study on Exemption of Insurer for a Long Period Laid-up Fishing Vessel (장기 계류 어선에 대한 보험자의 면책에 관한 연구)

  • A squid gill-net fishing vessel Jayueoroho which was being insured ITC-Hulls and was laid up long period illegally under the condition of unmanned in the Pert of Kamcheon. On 30, March, 1993, the fishing vessel moved out toward the high sea by assistance of two tugboats, 12 miles southeast from Teajongdae, to discharge sewage. At that time the shipowner, the skipper, chief engineer and two labourers were boarding, and a fire was broken out by electric leakage at sea. For all their efforts of fire-fighting operation the fishing vessel foundered with explosion. In this case, she had been breached the warranties of legality, especially Korean maritime acts concerned, and the warranties of seaworthiness(MIA 39(5)) as attributable cause because of unmanned on board by wilful misconduct of the insured. Therefore it is prima facie evidence that the insurer is not liable for any loss attributable to the wilful misconduct and breach of warranties of the insured in MIA 1906.

Big data-based piping material analysis framework in offshore structure for contract design

  • The material analysis of an offshore structure is generally conducted in the contract design phase for the price quotation of a new offshore project. This analysis is conducted manually by an engineer, which is time-consuming and can lead to inaccurate results, because the data size from previous projects is too large, and there are so many materials to consider. In this study, the piping materials in an offshore structure are analyzed for contract design using a big data framework. The big data technologies used include HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) for data saving, Hive and HBase for the database to handle the saved data, Spark and Kylin for data processing, and Zeppelin for user interface and visualization. The analyzed results show that the proposed big data framework can reduce the efforts put toward contract design in the estimation of the piping material cost.

The main factor and counterplan for marine casualties of fishing vessel according to the type of fishing gear in Korea (업종별 어선 해양사고의 원인과 대책)

  • Marine casualties originated from fishing vessels occupied about 71.2% of the whole marine casualties in Korea from 2008 to 2014, which has not changed much for a long time. Therefore, a pragmatic counterplan to decrease in casualties in fishing vessel is indispensable for reduction of marine casualties in Korea. Since the casualties occurred by fishing vessels may incline to a specific type of casualties according to the difference in the operating type; in this paper, 11 fishing types which occurred casualties frequently in numbers and occupied ratio were selected. Since the most frequent occurring casualties in fishing vessels were from collisions and fire explosion in statistics from KMST (2008~2014), the study focused on them. The collision is given a great deal of weight in all the casualties mostly due to the negligence of duty regardless of the job types. Gill netter, trap fishing boat, jig boat, multiple fishing boat and stow netter have their own specific causes of casualties in collision according to the operating types. The cause of fire explosion was mainly due to poor inspection and maintenance the electric cord. For this reason, it may be necessary for an operator to make strict precaution on the other vessels under way systematically, keep the regulation for preventing collisions, and for an engineer on watch to make a check the electricity periodically to reduce the fire explosion.

  • During the shipbuilding construction, the repair works will be occurred by various reasons such as the natural disaster, mistakes of engineers or workers, defect of material, and so on. The one of the engineer's responsibilities is to design considering every possibility and to prevent the repair works due to the mistakes during construction stages, but actually it is very difficult and impossible to avoid every mistake. However, it is also the responsibility of engineers to find the best solution for the unavoidable mistakes which is to maintain the capacity of vessel and guarantee the safety for the repair works considering the construction schedules and economic cost. In this paper, it will be introduced the brief of repair works to the structural damage of the moon-pool structure in drillship which is built in our shipyard. For the verification of the structural strength, the fatigue analysis has been carried out based on the guide of Classification society. Furthermore, the modifications of structure design and welding procedure have been applied to avoid the stress concentration in the moon-pool structure.

  • Marine casualties of dangerous cargo carriers lead to not only the loss of human life and properties, but also marine pollution caused by spilled oil and hazardous cargo. So the prevention of marine casualties and emergence response to minimize pollution are very important problems to be settled. But until now, most of salvage assistance jobs have been done based on rule of thumb without any technical support. It is not easy to cope with the incidents safely and rapidly under the current situation. The purpose of this paper is to develop a systematic and engineering salvage assistance tool available in the casualty sites. This paper contains the construction of salvage system, classification of technical items, and prototype system for the safety assessment. The developed system enable a salvage engineer in his/her salvaging jobs to perform safely and promptly.

  • Line heating is a manufacture method, which was widely used to machining a curved surface in the ship construction. The qualities using by line heating are very difference compare to the proficiency level of the engineer. So it's mainly depend on the automation equipment instead of the proficiency level engineer. In this study, it would be investigate the temperature distribution of the heating plate, which was used by the automation equipment according to line heating. The main factors are the moving velocity of the heating source, strength and the heating method separately, in temperature distribution while line heating. In this paper, it was investigated the temperature change with the vary of each three variables. The numerical result showed that peak temperature decrease if the moving velocity of the heating source increased. It can also calculate the change quantitatively that the peak temperature and temperature distribution changed linearly with the vary of the heating source.

  • A shipyard is an Engineer To Order (ETO) company that designs and manufactures new products when orders are placed. Various tasks are concurrently performed, thereby making process management considerably important. It is particularly important to plan and control production activities because production constitutes the largest part of the overall process. Therefore, this study focuses on the development of a production planning system based on an Advanced Planning System (APS). An APS is an integrated planning system that targets supply chain processes in accordance with the principles of hierarchical planning. In this study, a Supply Chain Planning Matrix (SCP-Matrix), which is used as a guideline for APS development, is designed through analysis of shipyard cases. Then, we define the process in detail, starting from long-term production plan as the initial application, and design and implement a long-term production planning system using a component-based development.

  • “The Japan Sea Rim Nations” is not one that was formed under a specific idea, as in the case of the European Community, in the respect of politics, economy and culture. At present, in particular after the Cold War, Japan has extended exchange on regional and private levels with the countries located on the other side of the Japan Sea from the first stages of friendship to economic relationships. In the future, it is necessary to promote the establishment of an international exchange network and traffic system for each of the traffic facilities in order to build up the Block that will mainly contribute to the economies of countries and regions in the area. For that purpose, it Is fundamental to reexamine the national land planning and the local development planning of each of the countries. From the standpoint of technology, the issues to be looked into are : study and development on marine civil engineering such as structures over straits : study and development on the construction engineering of express ways and express rail roads : development of vehiclessuch as cars and trains ; I propose approaches to my vision of these traffic systems from my standpoint as an engineer in this paper.
