Offshore wind farms (OWFs) should be promoted as part of global efforts to respond to climate change, and efforts to preserve biodiversity in terms of climate change adaptation should also be considered. However, the ecological status of marine birds related to OWFs on the Korean Peninsula, such as habitat and reproduction, are not well known. In this study, ecological reasons for the reproductive status of Black-tailed gulls in Korea and representation related to OWFs, the evaluation direction of marine birds related to OWFs was presented. In a review of the techniques for monitoring marine birds, it was confirmed that Korea also needs to provide basic status information on marine birds at the national level. In addition, this study analyzed the reproductive status and related research status of Black-tailed gulls, an important indicator and dominant species on the Korean Peninsula, in relation to marine development projects including OWFs. Furthermore, the direction of environmental impact assessment preparation and impact prediction for various development projects promoted in the ocean, such as OWFs, was considered.
This paper was researched on economic feasibility and sensibility of operation to offshore cage culture for cod. Offshore cage culture for cod needs to invest high budget what to construction and operation. And it was required variety methods about analysis of economic feasibility. Therefore, these were studied NPV, B/C and sensitivity for each by assuming a six scenarios considering the product performance according to the size of cod and culturing methods of fingerlings, etc. As a results, even though economy, if efficiency is low, it is a priority need the technical development to promote the feed efficiency to increase economic feasibility and should make efforts to enhance the business economy to strengthen the price competitiveness pricing with high quality products through quality control and brand recognition of cod. It expects to be used as a reference for related research in the future by deriving policy implications based on the method of analysis of the economic feasibility on offshore cage culture for cod.
Offshore-aquaculture is a new idea, has emerged as an alternative method, which can minimize the damage to the natural disaster due to the environment pollution by the fish farming activities in the coast and overcome the problems of vicious cycle in fish farming management. On the other hand, as the current fish farming laws and institutions focus on the support for offshore-aquaculture, having the limit to revitalizing and supporting the fish farming business in the open sea, it is necessary to amend the laws and institutions related to fish farm. We should be establish in connection with offshore-aquaculture, after the study aims at examining the foreign laws and institutions in such countries as USA and Norway, establishing the methods for the future laws and institutions of open sea fish farm through the analysis of the issues and controversies in the process of enactment in Korea.

Unlike photovoltaic systems installed on land, photovoltaic systems applied to the offshore plant have the characteristic that is installed in a limited space. For single point mooring plant, it is advantageous in terms of a reliable power supply to be installed in different directions of photovoltaic panels, because it is not possible to identify the position of the sun by rotation of the plant itself. Differences of installation angle between photovoltaic panels make a difference of the intensity of radiation irradiated on each photovoltaic panel, and it brings loss of generation quantity due to the partial shading. In order to provide a photovoltaic system suitable for offshore plant, the modeling which contains multiple photovoltaic panels controlled by single controller is performed. Then, it was examined how the output characteristics of the photovoltaic system change about the difference of the intensity of radiation that varies depending on the altitude of the sun. Finally, through the simulation, a development model of the photovoltaic system which is suitable for offshore plant is suggested.
In recent years, many countries have been endeavoring to exploit the offshore wind energy in terms of overcoming the limitations of on-land wind energy. Considering that mountains cover 70 percent of the Korean Peninsula and arable plains for wind energy are negligibly small, Korean government aggressively drives the offshore wind development of the Korean Peninsula. As part of preliminary investigation of offshore wind resources, KEPCO-RI (Korea Electric Power Corporation-Research Institute) has been analyzing marine buoy datasets measured at 5 positions over the period of 12 years, including estimation of extreme wind speed. It can be observed that variation of yearly wind speed, monthly wind speed as well as frequency distribution of wind direction. Wind classes of buoy sites are estimated by extrapolated average wind speed using log law. In addition, wind turbine class based on IEC code is assessed for evaluation of suitable wind turbine.

As sea state harsher in the ocean space, more large motion and wave loads occurs on ships hull by non-linear phenomena. To consider nonlinear effect on ships hull in the structural design verification, the direct calculation method with numerical approach is used rather than rule values for the reliable accuracy. In this paper, the non-linear wave loads analysis in time domain is performed by using a Rankine Panel Method together with numerical schemes. Linear calculations have been carried out based on DNV CSA-2 notation to generate the motion responses and wave loads of large ships. By short and long term analysis, the design wave amplitudes are selected for the nonlinear analysis. The maximum wave induced bending moment in hogging and sagging conditions are calculated in the nonlinear analysis. Also, the green water effect on the wave induced vertical bending moment was investigated. The results show the vertical bending moments are more influenced by green water in sagging condition than in hogging condition due to green water loading.
Polychaete community structure and its spatial distribution was investigated in 2008 from inshore and offshore of Lake Shihwa, Korea, in order to evaluate status of the benthic environment according to construction of the dike and the water gate. In the present study, the number of species, density, and diversity of polychaete community in inshore was significantly different from those in offshore. The density of polychaete community in offshore increased with the number of species whereas the diversity in inshore increased with the number of species. Dominant species in offshore were 13 species, higher than 1% of the total polychaete individuals. Heteromastus filiformis, known as the most dominant species before the construction of the dike, was the most dominant species in offshore, which collectively account for 54% of the total polychaete individuals. In inshore, the seven species were dominant, higher than 1% of the total individuals. Lumbrineris longifolia, Polydora sp., Capitella capitata, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, known as pollution tolerant species, contributed to higher than 75% of the total individuals in inshore. Multivariate statistical analyses, non-metric multidimensional scaling, showed apparent difference in polychaete community structure between inshore and offshore, and also difference between inner sites and outer sites of inshore around the water gate. Sediment characteristics (total organic carbon and nitrogen, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide) measured in this study also supported to this result. Therefore, this indicates that the offshore provides better benthic environments for polychaete habitation than the inshore, and the inshore around the water gate shows improving benthic environment, compared to the inner inshore.
The aims of this study are to estimate the optimal vessel reduction scales and these direct economic effects of coastal and offshore fisheries in the Republic of Korea. To estimate respectively optimal fishing efforts of individual fishery by species in coastal and offshore fisheries, we adopted appropriate fishing power of each species published by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and also considered biological and socio-economic factors such as the bycatch rate, the profit rate, the efficiency of resource use, the average age of fishing vessel, the intention of vessel reduction, and the annual changes in vessels by other factors. The direct economic effects of the optimal vessel reduction in coastal and offshore fisheries based on maximum sustainable yield and 2/3 maximum sustainable yield was calculated by a cost-benefit analysis. This study showed that optimal reduction numbers of vessels engaged in coastal and offshore fisheries were 4,431 and 374 vessels and the direct economic effects in coastal and offshore fisheries were about 371.7 and 569.4 billion won and these NPV and BCR were 111.7 billion won and 1.65 and 342.6 billion won and 4.97 respectively.
