Since the dynamics of the slave manipulator with high reduction ratio joints is likely to be much slower than that of the master manipulator, the control input the slave manipulator is so frequently saturated. This paper proposes a bilateral teleoperation control scheme for 2-DOF manipulators with high reduction ratio joints, which can effectively compensate the control input saturation. In the proposed scheme, the controllers of the slave manipulator are designed with an anti-windup feature and forces caused by the saturation are reflected to the operator holding the operating handle of the master manipulator. When the control input of the slave manipulator is saturated, the master manipulator moves slowly file to tile reflected forces. In this way, the position tracking performance of the slave manipulator with high reduction ratio joints can be enhanced regardless of saturation. The proposed scheme is shown to give excellent position tracking performance through a series of experiments.

Mobile manipulators are getting lime light in the field of home automation due to their mobility and manipulation capabilities. In this paper, we developed a small size manipulator system that can be mounted on a mobile robot as a preliminary study to develop a mobile manipulator. The developed manipulator has four degree-of-freedom. At the end-effector of manipulator, there are a camera and a gripper to recognize and manipulate the object. One of four degree-of-freedom is linear motion in vertical direction for better interaction with human hands which are located higher than the mobile manipulator. The developed manipulator was designed to dispose the four actuators close to the base of the manipulator to reduce rotational inertia of the manipulator, which improves stability of manipulation and reduces the risk of rollover. The developed manipulator repeatedly performed a pick and place task and successfully manipulate the object within the workspace of manipulator.

This paper presents an adaptive tracking control method for a welding mobile manipulator with several unknown parameters such as the last length of the manipulator, the wheel radius and the distance from the center to the wheel. The mobile manipulator consisted of the manipulator and the mobile-platform. Kinematic modelings for the manipulator and the mobile-platform with several unknown parameters were produced. The tracking error vectors for the manipulator and the mobile-platform were defined. These adaptive controllers were designed based on the Lyapunov function to guarantee the stability of the whole system when the mobile manipulator performs a welding task. Update laws were also designed to estimate the unknown dimensional parameters. To implement the designed controllers, a control system integrated with PIC16F877 microprocessors and a TMS320C32 DSP was developed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

The traditional robot manipulators are actuated by continuous range of motion actuators such as motors or hydraulic cylinders. However, there are many applications of mechanisms and robotic manipulators where only a finite number of locations need to be reached, and the robot’s trajectory is not important as long as it is bounded. Binary manipulator uses actuators which have only two stable states. As a result, binary manipulators have a finite number of states. The number of states of a binary manipulator grows exponentially with the number of actuators. This kind of robot manipulator has some advantage compared to a traditional one. Feedback control is not required, task repeatability can be very high, and finite state actuators are generally inexpensive. And this kind of robot manipulator has a fault tolerant mechanism because of kinematic redundancy. In this paper, we solve the inverse kinematic problem of a binary parallel robot manipulator using neural network and test the validity of this structure using some arbitrary points m the workspace of the robot manipulator. As a result, we can show that the neural network can find the nearest feasible points and corresponding binary states of the joints of the robot manipulator
This paper describes a natural frequency analysis conducted to find out a suitable working area for a spring-manipulator system generating a large vibrating force with mechanical resonance. Large force generation is one of the functions that we hope for a robot. For example, a weeding robot is required to generate a large force, because some weeds have roots spreading deeply and tightly. The spring-manipulator system has a spring element as an end-effector, so it can be in a state of resonance with the elasticity of the spring element and the inertial characteristics of the manipulator. A force generation method utilizing the mechanical resonance has potential to produce a large force that cannot be realized by a static method. A method for calculating a natural frequency of a spring-manipulator system with the generalized inertia tensor is proposed. Then the suitable working area for the spring-manipulator system is identified based on a natural frequency analysis. If a spring-manipulator system operates in the suitable working area, it can sustain mechanical resonance and generate a large vibrating force. Moreover, it is shown that adding a mass at the tip of the manipulator expands the suitable working area.

A three dimensional binary parallel robot manipulator uses actuators which have only two stable states and its structure is variable geometry truss. As a result, it has a finite number of states and fault tolerant mechanism because of kinematic redundancy. This kind of robot manipulator has some advantages compared to a traditional one. Feedback control is not required, task repeatability can be very high, and finite state actuators are generally inexpensive. Because the number of states of a binary robot manipulator grows exponentially with the number of actuators it is very difficult to solve and inverse kinematic problem. The goal of this paper is to develop an efficient algorithm to solve an inverse kinematic problem of three dimensional binary parallel robot manipulator using a backbone curve when the number of actuators are too much. We first derive the coordinate transformations associated with a three degree of freedom in-parallel actuated robot manipulator. The backbone curve is generated optimally by considering the maximum roll and pitch angles of the robot manipulator configuration and length of link. Then, the robot manipulator is fitted along the backbone curve with some criterion.

Parallel manipulator is suitable for the high precise task because it than has higher stiffness, larger load capacity and more excellent precision, due to the closed-lop structure, than serial manipulator. But the controller design for parallel manipulator is difficult because the parallel manipulator has both the complexity of structure and the interference of actuators. The precision improvement of parallel manipulator using a classical linear control scheme is difficult because the parallel manipulator has the tough nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, firstly, the kinematic analysis of a parallel manipulator used at the experiments is performed so as to show the controllability. The analysis of internal singular configuration of the workspace is performed using the kinematic isotropic index so a sto show the limitation of control performance of a simple linear controller with fixed control gains. Secondly, a control scheme is designed by using an adaptive fuzzy logic controller so that active joints of the parallel manipulator track more precisely the desired input trajectory. This adaptive fuzzy logic controller so that active joints of the parallel manipulator track more precisely the desired input trajectory. This adaptive fuzzy logic controller is often used for the control of nonlinear system because it has both the inference ability and the learning ability. Lastly, the effeciency of designed control scheme is demonstrated by the real-time control experiments with IBM PC interface logic H/W and S/W of my won making. The experimental results was a success.

This paper presents cable-hydraulic driven 3DoF (Degree-of-Freedom) manipulator for cooperative robot with high output/low inertia and enhancing lager workspace of hydraulic manipulator. Hydraulic actuation could be solution to design more higher output manipulator than the one of electric motor actuation due to install actuation source and robot joint separated. In spite of this advantage, the conventional hydraulic driven manipulator using cylinder or vane actuator is not suitable for the candidate of cooperative robot because smaller workspace owing to small RoM (Range of Motion) hydraulic actuator. In this paper, we propose 3DoF manipulator with cable-hydraulic actuation which is more larger ratio of payload-to-weight than the one of conventional cooperative manipulator and larger workspace than the one of existing hydraulic driven manipulator. The performance of proposed manipulator was demonstrated by the experiments for confirming overall workspace task, high payload operation task under worst situation and comparing repeatability between developed manipulator and existed cooperative robots. The results of experiments showed that the appropriate performance of proposed manipulator for cooperative robot.

In this paper, we propose a sliding mode controller for a robot manipulator with passive joints. A robot manipulator with passive joints which are not equipped with any actuators is a kind of underactuated system. Underactuated systems have some advantages compared to fully-actuated ones. For example, they weigh less and consume less energy because they have smaller number of components than fully-actuated ones. However the control of an underactuated manipulator is much more difficult than that of fully- actuated robot manipulator. In this paper a complex dynamic model of a manipulator with passive joints is manipulated for sliding mode control. Sliding mode controllers are designed for this complex system and the stability of the controllers is proved mathematically. Finally a simulation for this control system is executed for evaluating the effectiveness of the designed sliding mode controller.

Using the design parameters of multi-joint manipulator, worspace of the manipulator were evaluated analytically, and the relation between such design parameters and nonlinearity of the manipulator were presented dynamically. The ratio of the volumes of a manipulator's workspace to the cube of its total link length presents a kinematic performance index [NVI] for the manipullator. It is possible to geometrically represent the manipulator dynamics with the generalized inertia ellipsoid (GIE). The relation between the GIE configuration and the characteristics of manipulator dynamics was analysed in terms of inertia and nonlinear forces (Coliolis and centrifugal forces). The nonlinearity caused by the change of the GIE configuration were affected by the difference between the major and minor axes length of the GIE. The results of this investigationare applied to the optimal design of the manipulator.
