  • As the importance of R&D has increased, there have been various efforts to apply the quality management principles and tools to R&D activities in order to manage them effectively. The R&D sector differs from other value chains, so it may be difficult to apply quality management without proper considerations of R&D characteristics. This study describes the characteristics of R&D as high uncertainty and risk, diversity of R&D types, project-based activities, importance of strategic goals and business models, and importance of intangible assets. Three well accepted R&D quality management models are reviewed and implications for quality management and R&D characteristics are summarized. Based on these findings, the management targets of R&D quality management are classified into management level (organization, project) and management focus (process, output), and the contexts of R&D quality management are classified into R&D type (research, development) and market/customer requirement clarity (fluid, specific), and appropriate R&D quality management activities in each situations have been suggested.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the strategic direction of organizations and their employees to efficiently utilize smart factories and enhance business performance among Korean manufacturing companies. Research design, data, and methodology: We derived a structured research model to check the mediated effect of utilization of smart factory between the characteristics of smart factory and the innovation activities. Results: Quality characteristics of smart factory and Innovation activities were all found to have a statistically significant effect on utilization of smart factory, utilization of smart factory was found to have a statistically significant effect on the business performance. And it has been shown that the utilization of smart factory is partially mediated relative to the quality characteristics of smart factory and business performance and relative to innovation activities and business performance. Conclusions: Smart factory builders can reflect the areas that affect utilization of the smart factory in their strategies by considering the quality characteristics of the smart factory and innovation Activities. Therefore, smart factory builders can identify the quality characteristics of smart factory and reflect them in the process and analyze active utilize measures through the innovative activities of the employees of the organization, thereby influencing business performance.

  • It is generally thought that the quality management and the six-sigma management innovation are not applicable to service industry, which might be derived from some differences between service and manufacturing industries. However, both are substantially alike in some intrinsic attributes. KT is leading the quality management and the six-sigma innovation activities in service industry, especially among telecommunication companies in Korea. Six sigma management innovation has been fostered in KT within short period of time and played an important role in helping KT privatized successfully. The successful cases of six sigma innovation activities in KT could be introduced to other Korean companies in service industry. Five key factors for the success of six-sigma innovation activities are suggested, The hidden factory in all the fields of company should be eliminated. Six-sigma projects need to be connected with the company strategy. The project should be carried out intensively in a short time. The innovation activities in the field need to be integrated. The best practice of six-sigma should be disseminated in the field.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine machine learning use cases in manufacturing companies from a digital quality management (DQM) perspective and to analyze and present machine learning research patterns from a quality management perspective. Methods: This study was conducted based on systematic literature review methodology. A comprehensive and systematic review was conducted on manufacturing papers covering the overall quality management process from 2015 to 2022. A total of 3 research questions were established according to the goal of the study, and a total of 5 literature selection criteria were set, based on which approximately 110 research papers were selected. Based on the selected papers, machine learning research patterns according to quality management were analyzed. Results: The results of this study are as follows. Among quality management activities, it can be seen that research on the use of machine learning technology is being most actively conducted in relation to quality defect analysis. It suggests that research on the use of NN-based algorithms is taking place most actively compared to other machine learning methods across quality management activities. Lastly, this study suggests that the unique characteristics of each machine learning algorithm should be considered for efficient and effective quality management in the manufacturing industry. Conclusion: This study is significant in that it presents machine learning research trends from an industrial perspective from a digital quality management perspective and lays the foundation for presenting optimal machine learning algorithms in future quality management activities.
