Factors Influencing Professionalism in Male and Female Student Nurses (간호대학생의 성별에 따른 간호전문직관의 차이와 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: Nursing is regarded as a female-dominated profession. However, the number of Korean males entering the field of nursing is increasing. This study examines which of the following factors influence professionalism in male and female student nurses: area of nursing, gender identity, gender stereotypes, satisfaction with the field, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal relationships. Method: In total, 133 male and 293 female student nurses were selected from four Korean provinces between July 2013 and February 2014 to participate in this study. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, ${\chi}^2$-tests of independence, and multiple regression analyses using SPSS/Win 20 software. Results: In males, 47.4% of variance in nursing professionalism was accounted for by grades, interpersonal relationships, gender stereotypes, and satisfaction with the field. In females, 41.9% of variance in nursing professionalism was accounted for by satisfaction with the field, interpersonal relationships, area of nursing, age, emotional intelligence and grades. Common factors that influenced both genders included satisfaction with the field, interpersonal relationships and grades. Conclusion: Although males and females revealed no significant differences in overall mean scores of nursing professionalism, several factors influencing nursing professionalism did differ by gender. Therefore, gender-specific nursing educational and training programs may be necessary to promote professionalism among student nurses.

A Study of Male Student Stress Caused by Interpersonal Relations (남자 대학생의 대인관계 스트레스 경험)

  • The purposes of this study are to show in interpersonal relations what factors male students are stressed from, how they experience stress, how they cope With it in each situation, and what this results in It attempt to gam basic materials to promote male student health and positive coping methods, The subject of this study was 15 male students of C University located in Seoul and Kyeonggui-Do They were composed of 5 sophomores, 5 Juniors and 5 seniors The period for collecting materials was October 1997 to January 1998, and the interview time ranged from 50 minutes to two hours The interview frequency was one to three times as occasion demanded, The materials were analyzed by the methods and theory suggested by Strauss & Corbin (1990) The results were 130 categories grouped into 33 divisions by similarity Finally, they were united into 9 higher categories In interpersonal relations the core category of male student stress is "affliction", and it follows the course of generation-coping-resolution The types showed in the course of material analysis are as follows, (1) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is repeated- "affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" With his own will and solves It affirmatively, (2) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is repeated-so "affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively (3) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is temporary-"affliction" is strong and temporary-and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" with his own will and solves it affirmatively (4) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is temporary-"affliction" is weak and temporary-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively, (5) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is repeated-"affliction" is strong-and continuous and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" with his own will and solves it affirmatively (6) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is repeated-"affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively. According to the above results, the conditions of cause and effect for male students to generate "affliction" should be understood in order to help cope with stress caused by interpersonal relations A program for education and counseling should be developed for male students to strengthen their 'ability sense' in choosing coping strategies In addition, the individual estimation for ability sense should be performed when education and counseling them.

Types of Male College of Nursing Students' Adaptation to Their Academic Department (남자 간호대학생의 학과 적응 유형)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the types and characteristics of male college nursing students' adaptation to their academic department. Methods: Q methodology was applied to determine the subjectivity of the male nursing students' adaptation to their academic department. Fifty male nursing students were asked to select and answer questions among a set of 36 Q-statements using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the PC QUANL program. Results: Three types of male students' adaptation to the department of nursing were identified. Type I was termed 'resilience-acceptance', Type II, 'inner-conflict', and Type III, 'goal-oriented'. Conclusion: The study results can be used as the basic data needed to develop nursing interventions suitable to the types of male college nursing students' adaptation to their academic department.

The Influence of Gender Role Conflicts, Professional Nursing Values and Career Preparation Behaviors of Male Nursing Students (남자 간호대학생의 성역할 갈등, 간호전문직관이 진로준비행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of gender role conflicts, professional nursing value on career preparation behaviors of male nursing university student. Data were collected from 127 male nursing university student in grade 2-4 by using structured questionnaires from July 1 to November 30, 2018. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression by using SPSS Win 24.0 program. Multiple regression analysis showed that the predictors of career preparation behaviors were professional nursing values(${\beta}=0.28$, p=.001), satisfaction with major (${\beta}=0.23$, p=.006), club(${\beta}=.19$, p=.020) and the regression equation explained 20.8% of career preparation behaviors. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to provide career educational programs considering according to the academic year of male nursing students and to develop educational programs to improve the nursing professionalism of male nursing students.

  • The study was to understand the meaning and nature of clinical practice by examining the clinical experience of male nursing college students who have experienced clinical practice and to obtain basic data on how male nurses influence the career setting in clinical practice. to be. Participants in this study were male students who are currently in the Department of Nursing at H University, and three snowmen were selected as 3rd grade students and 3rd grade male students who had clinical practice, and analyzed meaningful statements according to Colaizzi data analysis To understand the meaning of students' clinical experience. The findings were divided into three categories, with six themes and 14 meaningful statements. The male nursing students experienced discrimination on the grounds of 'negative nursing image experienced in ward practice', 'the burden of self to be handled', and 'the charm of nursing found in the special part training experience'. Conflict and confusion over the profession were causing. However, among them, the professionalism of the nurses was confirmed and the pleasure of learning was found, and the results of this study can provide a holistic view of the clinical practice experience of male nursing students. In addition, it can be used as a basic data useful for counseling and guidance on academic adaptation and clinical practice adaptation of male nursing college students, and is expected to be useful for counseling career decision after graduation of male nursing students.

Understanding the Gender Role Identity in Male Nursing Students (남자 간호대학생의 성역할정체감 인식 유형)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the specific types and characteristics of gender role identity in view of male nursing students. Method: Q-methodology, a technique for extracting subjective opinions, was used. Forty participants completed the Q-sort activity, rating each statement relative to the others. The Q sample has two categories, representing masculinity and femininity, and each category has 20 statements, resulting in 40 adjectives. The collected data were analyzed by QUANL PC program. Results: Three types of gender role identity of male nursing students were identified: 'Taciturn warmth type', 'assertive power type', 'empathic warmth type'. Despite the differences among the types in this research, male nursing students are likely to have the understanding and keep faith. Conclusion: Male nursing students were exposed to many problems because of the gendered culture of nursing education. To understand the male nursing students' gender role identity will help to promote adaptation in nursing field.

A Study of Male Students' Experience Majoring in Nursing (남학생의 간호학 전공경험)

  • Purpose: This study attempted to describe the essential structure of male students' experience as nursing majors. Method: The data were collected through the in-depth interviews of seven male students majoring in nursing. The analysis of data were made using phenomenological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi(1978). Result: In this study, five essential themes emerged. They are: $\ulcorner$Strong initial -though subsequently declining- hesitation over choice of major$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Challenging, ongoing effort to survive in an environment of new and unaccustomed experiences and relationships$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Recurring sense of reassurance and relief upon occasions of unexpected success$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Growing internalization and acceptance of their role as nursing students or as future nurses$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Ambivalent feelings resulting from the contradiction between their vision concerning their future as nurses and their worry concerning their future as male nurses$\lrcorner$Conclusion: With an increasing number of male students majoring in nursing, this study will prove helpful not only in understanding male students' experience while majoring in nursing but also in describing their needs for systemic and emotional support.

Nursing Image and Professionalism Perceived by Male and Female Nursing Students in College (3년제 간호학 전공 남학생과 여학생이 지각한 간호이미지와 간호전문직관)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the degree and correlations between the nursing image and professionalism perceived by male and female nursing students in College. Method: The subjects were composed of 683 nursing students (male 59, female 624) in college located in Gyeonggi province using convenience sampling method. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient and t-test were used for data analysis. Results: The mean score of nursing image perceived by male nursing students was 3.80 (${\pm}0.51$) and that of female nursing students was 3.75 (${\pm}0.45$). The mean score of professionalism perceived by male nursing students was 3.61 (${\pm}0.55$) and that of female nursing students was 3.64 (${\pm}0.42$). There was no significant difference between nursing image of male and female students in statistical analysis (t=1.38, p=.248). And there was no significant difference between professionalism of male and female students in statistical analysis (t=1.73, p=.167). The nursing image perceived by male nursing students was positively related to professionalism (r=.74, p<.001). The nursing image perceived by female nursing students was positively related to professionalism (r=.69, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, further research is needed to change of perspectives on new educational approach to male nursing students.

A Study on Sex Consciousness, Son Preference and Sex Ratio Disproportion of the College Students (일부 대학생의 성의식, 성선호도 및 성비불균형에 관한 연구)

  • This study attempted to find out a way which is to establish a desirable value and social culture related to sexuality. This study examined student's value and preference about sex and at the same time resolving method to correct ill-rooted value of male preference in our social culture. This study subjects consisted of 409 male and female students of a college located in Incheon area. The study data collected from June 5th to June 11th. 1998. Survey technique was chosen to collect data and analized by SPSS/PC+, SAS program using statistical methods of frequency. percent. $X^ 2-test$ and t-test. The study results are as follows ; 1) Sex satisfaction score of male students was higher than female students and the difference was significant statistically (p<0.0001). 2) There was a difference between male and female student's thought that our socity's structure has a sex discrimination. But female students felt strongly unequality of sex in our socity. 3) $65.4\%$ of total students have a general knowledge about sex and female student's score was higher than male students. The high percent of students get into know sex through mass media $(32.6\%)$ and peer groups $(31.9\%)$. 4) Student's attitude to sex was different from male and female students. Male students have more liberal attitude about sex than female students. 5) $97.1\%$ of the total students believe that our socity has son preference. 6) $86.5\%$ of the total students thought that sex ratio disproportion resulted from male preference is worriable problems in our socity. But there was no significant difference between both sexes.

Effects of a Smoking Cessation Program on Processes of Change, Situational Temptation and Decisional Balance in Male University Student Smokers (금연프로그램이 흡연 남자대학생의 변화과정, 유혹상황, 의사결정균형에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a smoking cessation program on processes of change, situational temptation, and decisional balance in male university student smokers. Method: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, 78 male university students consisted of an experimental group (n=48) and a control group (n=30). A smoking cessation program was applied to the experimental group for a period of 6 months while no program was given to the control group. Study questionnaires were used to measure outcome variables before and after the program. Descriptive analysis, $\chi^2$-test, t-test, and ANCOVA were used with SPSS 18.0 program for data analysis. Results: After treatment with this program, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for processes of change (experiential and behavioral processes of change) than the control group. The experimental group also showed significantly lower scores for situational temptation (positive social, negative affect, and habit strength). Conclusion: The smoking cessation program may have positive effects on process of change and smoking temptation for male university student smokers.
